As language competence grows
out of meaningful use of language itself, the language environment must
be structured so that a balance is maintained between oral language, reading,
writing, listening, and the formal language skills of spelling, punctuation
and grammar.
These elements are seen as
being inextricably bound together in our English program. Our expectation
is that children will learn to read and write to the best of their potential.
To achieve this end, pupils will be engaged in purposeful language activities
within the classroom, be subjected to a comprehensive range of reading
materials, and become actively involved in the writing process.
