What is an Immersion Unit?

The immersion units will involve year ten students in rich and rewarding learning experiences both on and off the Terrace campus. They have the following characteristics:

  • They aim to fully immerse students in authentic and challenging experiences.
  • They have a connectedness to the community and real life experiences.
  • They include rigorous assessment that is determined by the completion of a project task.
  • They are technology rich.
  • They involve inquiry and experiential learning.

How are Immersion Units offered?

  • During September, 2001 a three week pilot took place. All year ten students chose from one of seven immersion units, and stopped all other classes to concentrate on the immersion unit.In 2002, Immersion units are being offered in a similar way.
  • From 2003, it is intended that the immersion units will be offered more than once a year.

Will Immersion Units be assessed and reported?

  • Each unit will require students to complete assessment tasks. Outcomes that align to the QSA years 1 - 10 Key Learning Area Syllabi will be identified for eachImmersion Unit.
  • Special reports are being developed to report student outcomes to parents.
