Yr 8 HPE
St. Joseph's College
Gregory Terrace
Health and Physical Education is a practically-based subject
with a small theoretical component included. Students will undertake a
sport morning (double period) and will also have four Health lessons in
each 10 day lesson cycle. The aims of the course are:
(i) to develop the
neuro-muscular co-ordination of each student.
(ii) to develop the
fitness level of each student through concentration on the components
of speed, strength, flexibility and endurance. The development of these
aims will be structured to suit the individual ability and potential of
each student, subject to contact time and available facilities.
Students will be exposed
throughout the year to most of the GPS Sports. It is hoped that this will
develop individual confidence in these sports and encourage students to
take an active part in the College's sporting programme. Opportunities
will also exist to participate in various sporting and recreational activities.
Physical Education
lessons will include:
€ Game skills and ball handling activities.
€ Minor games.
€ Gymnastics.
€ Swimming.
€ Games and sports including touch, soccer, sphairee, basketball
& softball.
A number of Health
lessons are taken during the year covering topics such as;
Overview of the body,
safety, basic first aid, diet and weight control and personal care and
hygiene. Some physical appraisal and fitness assessment of individuals
will be undertaken.
