Learning Enrichment Subjects - Year 8
The Year 8 Learning Enrichment subject replaces the learning of a foreign
language, Japanese and French, with learning support time. The Year 8
students are assessed in the areas of English, Mathematics and Science.
As a result of this testing, students identified, as 'at risk' of experiencing
difficulty in their learning, are offered a place in the Learning Support
Program. The students are individually assessed, educational goals are
planned and programs are implemented. There are five sessions a fortnight
and the students are given extra support in the areas of English, Maths,
assignment completion, study skills and exam techniques. Students may
participate in the Learning Support Program for one or two semesters.
The Secondary Learning
Assistance Program (LAP) Years 8 - 10
The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) plays in integral role in supporting
boys in their learning. The boys are withdrawn from either English or
Maths to be given individual assistance in the particular subject area.
Trained volunteer 'tutors' work with the boys on tasks set either by the
Learning Support Teacher or the Subject Teacher. The focus for one student
may be developing writing skills and for another, research and note-taking
in the library. Volunteers come from the Terrace community and beyond.
Parents, grandparents and friends are all encouraged to join LAP. All
volunteers are required to participate in the 'training sessions'.
The Support Program
Network is open to all parents of students in Learning Support Programs.
Meetings occur once a term and are announced in the 'Terrace News'. This
provides a venue for parent input, support and information. The current
convenor is Mrs Zelda Gilbride.
