Music is an important part of the school life at Terrace and is seen as an essential element in developing ‘the whole man’. Many boys in the College are involved with music in either curricular or co-curricular guise.
Facilities
The Terrace Music Department is housed in the Music Centre, a fully air conditioned complex consisting of two large divisible classrooms, one of which contains the bands’ rehearsal area and can be used as a performance venue, five studios used for the instrumental program, a staff room and an instrument store room. All classrooms and four of the studios contain a piano. Twelve computers with MIDI keyboards are housed in music room MU 1 to allow music elective students to compose, arrange and publish their music, and to enable students to consolidate their theoretical and aural skills.
Music is compulsory for all students in Years 5-8; from Years 9-12 it becomes an elective subject, taken four times a week in Years 9 and 10 and five times a week in Years 11 and 12. In both the Middle School and Upper School programs, the practical nature of music is explored through singing and instrumental performance; in the upper school program students study in the three dimensions of Listening, Composing and Performing. Music Extension (Performance) is also offered in Year 12 for students interested in Solo Performance.
All Year 5 students take part in either a concert band or string orchestra as part of their classroom music subject for the year. This class takes place during period 4 every Monday. The students are given lessons by specialist teachers on their instrument in small groups scheduled for Monday afternoons. These specialist lessons and all instruments are provided to the students free of charge for the year. This program is designed to include boys who have had previous instrumental experience as well as identifying boys with potential musical talent.
