Report 2004
2004 was another busy year for the Faculty with a number of exiting initiatives implemented. The Faculty encompasses the subjects of Physical Education (year 11, 12), Recreation (year 11, 12) and Health and Physical Education (years 5-10). This key learning area provides a foundation for developing active and informed members of society, capable of managing the interactions between themselves and their social, cultural and physical environments in the pursuit of good health.
This year the Faculty successfully hosted the Consultant in Residence Program – A Healthy Lifestyle. The key objectives of the consultancy were:
- To encourage and promote participation in physical activity for all members of the school community.
- Raise awareness of, and provide alternatives to, the consequences of an unhealthy diet.
- Explore a range of issues affecting adolescent health and well being.
- Generate support mechanisms and ongoing programs to maintain a ‘healthy school'
These objectives were achieved through seminars, lectures, physical activity classes and debates aimed at the whole Terrace Community. The Highlights of the Consultancy were undoubtedly the Parent Debate, hosted by Dr Norman Swan, the Group Fitness classes at Zest Health Club and importantly the noticeable change in eating habits observed through sales in the school tuckshop. Many thanks to all involved in the program.
The Human Movement Faculty staff act as positive role models for all students at Terrace through their teaching and involvement in extra curricular sporting programs. Congratulations must go to three staff members who successfully coached teams to GPS premierships in 2004, Damian Cuddihy (cricket), Anthony Gibb (rugby) and Luke Gribble (basketball).
Terrace students enjoyed a number of Faculty camps and excursions in 2004. From the Year 7 lifesaving excursion to the Recreation paddling and climbing camps students were able to be physically educated in a variety of settings and through a variety of sporting modalities.
My personal thanks must go to the faculty staff for their continued efforts throughout the year. Their professionalism and enthusiasm for the subject is reflected in the enjoyment and learning the students display through their classes.
Mr. Mason Hellyer
