Before le Baron Haussmann gave Paris "un lifting", the streets looked like this. There were no footpaths, no sewers and rubbish accumulated in the streets. The Folies Bergères is still one of the best known cabarets, or café concerts, in Paris. Renoir painted one of the bar girls. The Commune was the revolution that followed the Franco-Prussian war and the Siege of Paris. During the uprising, the city was burned. This was the café concert that started the trend. Its owner, Rodolphe Salis, named the club after a stray cat he found on the footpath outside.
