Le métro ~ other information
Here are some handy hints and information to help you when you use the Métro.

Security

Be discrete! Don't show off things- like jewelry or cameras - which would tempt thieves.

  • Beware of pickpockets on the Métro. Stations and trains are crowded and thieves are very clever. Put your wallet/purse in a very safe place. Avoid carrying it in a hip pocket.
  • Ensure that the outer pockets of your backpack contain items of little value. It is more secure to put your backpack in front of you.
  • Avoid using a "showy" handbag. Keep it in your hands in front of you at all times.
  • Ensure that you travel with someone late at night, especially if heading for the terminals which tend to be quieter than city centre stations.
  • Make sure that you do not become separated from companions and left behind on the platform alone. This is a favourite ploy with pickpockets.

Inside the train.

  • There is more standing room than seats on the Métro. The "strapotins" or flap down seats near the door allow a quick exit, but can't be used during rush hours.

  • Follow the map so that you know when your destination is approaching. You should memorise the name of the station before the one you need so you can move closer to the exit.

  • You may need to open the doors - they are not automatic. But, they do close automatically after the siren.

  • It is against the law to beg or to try to sell things inside the Métro system. People will try to encourage you to give them money. Avoid eye contact and ignore them.

  • There are licenced buskers who are allowed to perform in the trains or in the passages. They appreciate a small donation.

  • There are regular ticket checks and fines for ticket defaulters. Ensure that you don't lose your ticket!

A Funicular Métro!

Yes! You can travel uphill on the Métro. This one takes you from the bottom of the hill at Montmartre to the top, to Sacré Coeur. It saves climbing many hundreds of steps.

It works on a system of counterbalancing trains. As one ascends, another descends to counterbalance it.

If you can find a place by the window of the car, you will have a fine view of the city of Paris as you travel.

Pont Neuf

Interesting Stations.

Some stations have themes. This is Pont Neuf which is the stop for the French Mint (where all the coins and banknotes are made).

Its roof and walls are covered in various models of coins through the ages.

There is also an old press which was used for the printing of bank notes.
