Health

1. STIMULUS.

You have had a really bad term, healthwise.. You seem to have had a lot of health problems and /or accidents/illnesses etc. It feels as if you have nearly lived in the doctor’s surgery …………. Your monthly letter to your French penfriend is long overdue.

TASK Write a letter to your penfriend telling him/her all about your health problems, your visit/s to the doctor, etc.

2. STIMULUS

Now Springtime’s arriving, you’ve decided to embark on a “keep fit” programme since you have lots of bad habits and perhaps you are not really as fit as you could be!

TASK Write a letter to your penfriend telling him/her all about your previous bad habits, and how you are now going to start / or have already started, keeping fit.

FAMILY/ RELATIONSHIPS

1. STIMULUS

You feel as if you are the “slave” of the family or a male version of “Cinderella”. The family treat you quite dreadfully. You end up with all the household chores to do while they go out and have a wonderful time. Unknown to them, you keep a secret diary in French (so they can’t read it) where you record your daily tasks, feelings etc. Your diary is the only friend in whom you can confide!

TASK Write one or two days’ entries for your diary telling about what is happening at home

2 STIMULUS

You have received a letter from your penfriend. He’s been having problems with his parents. He wants you to give him some useful ideas as to how to cope or deal with the situation.

TASK Write a letter to your penfriend. Discuss his present situation, comparing his parents with yours. Offer him some suitable advice or strategies.

3. STIMULUS

You have been having a dreadful time with your personal life lately. In desperation, you decide to write some “courrier du coeur” to Tante Charlotte in a French magazine - at least you can keep your anonymity this way! Her advice could possibly be helpful.

TASK: Write a letter to Tante Charlotte describing your personal problems and asking for help.

SCHOOL

1. STIMULUS

You have decided to start at diary - in French - because no-one else in your family can read it. At the moment you feel very depressed. Absolutely nothing at school seems to be going right for you - homework, teachers, relationships with other students, class work, exams, your favourite extra-curricular..... Your diary is the only place where you can whinge successfully!

HOLIDAYS

1. STIMULUS.

You are staying on exchange in France. A French friend of yours who lives just south of Paris wants you to go on holiday to England with him. He has sent you this e-mail.

For various reasons, this is absolutely last way you want to cross the Channel! You have quite different ideas!

TASK Write an e-mail back. Tell Pierre his idea is not what you want and explain fully what are your objections. Propose an alternative way of going to England. Fully justify your reasons for this. Add any extra information you feel is relevant.

Salut !We are studying advertising and the media at the moment. I'm trying to find out people's views on this. Could you tell me how you feel about:

advertising - is it a good or bad thing? What's your favourite ad?

1. Stimulus

Your penfriend has written asking about your attitudes and the attitudes of people in Australia generally towards saving water or electricity. S/He also wants to know what actions are taken generally for water or energy conservation.

TASK: Write a letter in response.

2. Stimulus

You are a very keen "green" but your family are absolutely hopeless and you despair of ever converting them. You turn to the secret diary which you keep in French (no-one else in the family speaks the language so you can say what you like!) to record your on-going struggle.

TASK: Write two or three days experiences in your diary.

3. STIMULUS

You are an enthusiastic environmentalist who really believes in thinking globally and acting locally. You are very concerned about your “un-green” family. Your secret diary in French is where you can have your say!

TASK: Compare your attitudes and actions with those of your family in your secret diary.

4. STIMULUS

You have received this letter from your mates at Alexis' school.

Salut !We are doing a unit on the environment in English at school. We are studying themes on such things as conservation of energy/water, recycling, etc. What are some of the things which people are doing in Australia, Queensland or Brisbane? Help! Our projects are due in two weeks! Can you give us information on one of these themes? Alexis, Bert et Gaëlle.

SHOPPING

1. Stimulus

Your penfriend has written asking about going shopping in Australia. For example, she asks, are there shopping centres and what are they like? Would they be similar to the ones in France?

TASK: Choose your favourite shopping centre and explain its facilities, shops, etc. for your friend. Remember to try to compare/contrast with what you have heard about French ones.

2 . Stimulus

Returning home to Australia from visiting your penfriend in Lyon, you stopped off in Paris. Your shopping trip to Les 4 Temps in Paris was a real experience! You are still recovering from it. Everything that could go wrong,, did.

Write to your penfirend describing the whole dreadful experience.

3. STIMULUS.

Your recent visit to the shops in La Chaux de Fond was not at all successful. You are feeling very annoyed about the experience.

TASK: Write a letter to the shopping centre manager, explaining the reason for your dissatisfaction.

LEISURE

STIMULUS

Lycée Jules Ferraz has written to your teacher asking for material for their school magazine about life in Australia. They specifically want details on Australian young people’s attitudes and participation in sport or leisure interests and how these may differ from French ideas.

TASK Write a report for the school magazine which focuses on the attitudes and participation of young Australians in EITHER sport OR leisure interests. You will also need to briefly compare Australian and French attitudes.
