Year 12 Religion and Ethics
Gender and Spirituality

Unit Summary

  • One term in length
  • Assessment: Presentation

The unit provides students with an opportunity to

understand:

  • gender stereotypes and sexism
  • historical roles of men and women in religious contexts
  • male and female images of the Divine
  • influential female religious figures past and present
  • the place of women in religious groups today

Ethics and Morality

Unit Summary

  • One term in length
  • Assessment: research assignment

The unit provides students

with the opportunity to:

  • Explore factors that contribute to a person’s moral stance — family background, cultural context, personal opinions and feelings, religious beliefs
  • Investigate a number of ethical and moral situations
  • Discuss and plot the process of moral decision-making
  • Explore the factors and dynamics that shape the responses to ethical situations in a community
  • Examine the response of religious tradition(s) and belief systems to moral issues
  • be challenged to commit to a possible course of action for an ethical situation.

Unit Summary

  • Assessment: short answer exam

This unit provides

students with the opportunity to:

  • examine the relationship between religious belief and community, consciousness and action
  • study how religious faith has motivated people to make a difference in the lives of others
  • show an awareness of the ways in which people are able to contribute to this world
  • explore lifestyle choices and options.

Origins, Purpose and Destiny

Unit Summary

  • One term in length
  • Assessment:response to stimulus exam

This unit provides students

with the opportunity to

explore:

  • factors that together constitute and shape purpose in life e.g. family experience, ethnic background, cultural heritage, religious affiliation, sexuality
  • religious responses to the human quest for understanding the origin and destiny of humankind
  • the questions “How did I come to be here?”, Why am I here?” Where am I going?”.

Kairos retreat

Students consider the great life questions.

Male Spiritualty and gender

Students in the unit look at the connection they have with other people. This is highlighted on the Kairos Retreat.

Life choices

Leadership

Students in this unit look at themselves and begin to identify characteristics about themselves - how they approach situations and so on. This also helps them develop self awareness in the area of their own leadership skills.

Ethics and morality

 

Students are asked to look carefully at the values they espouse and the values of society around them.
