Students
are introduced to the use of a wide variety of laboratory
equipment in a range of experiments and activities throughout
the year. They learn the importance of laboratory safety,
scientific observation and scientific method.
Science
topics encompass the range of Strands covered in the Queensland Science Syllabus including
Science in Society, Life and Living, Earth and Beyond, Energy and Change and Natural and Processed Materials.
Some of the highlights during the year include:
- Learning how to use a bunsen burner.
- Preparation of microscope slides, and examination of these slides, and other prepared slides under the microscope.
- Introduction to chemistry experiments.
- Study of the Solar System.
- Experiments involving electrical circuits and activities involving force and motion.
What do you need for science this year?
- Exercise book – A4/hole-punched
- Science Report Book – lined and grid for experimental reports (may need to punch holes as well.)
- Textbook - ‘Science 8 – a contextual approach’ Heinemann - from Bookhire + CD on overnight load to download onto your computer.
- Work booklets – ‘Science Skills’ and ‘Science Skills book 2’
- 4 Hole ring binder (share with English) (this should be able to hold booklets, exercise books, experiment book and the text book.)
- Safety goggles in soft protective pouch – labelled with permanent marker.
- Scientific Calculator
- Pencil case with pens (including red), ruler, and pencils.
Dimensions of Learning (DOL)
The teaching and learning of Science at Terrace uses Dimensions of Learning (DOL) as the instructional framework. The five dimensions that have been incorporated into the Science Program include:.
- Dimension 1 - Attitudes and perceptions about learning
- Dimension 2 - Acquiring and integrating knowledge
- Dimension 3 - Extending and refining knowledge
- Dimension 4 - Using knowledge meaningfully
- Dimension 5 - Productive habits of mind
