Science in Year 9 encompass the range of strands covered in the Queensland Science Syllabus including Science in Society, Life and Living, Earth and Beyond, energy and change and Natural and Processed Materials.

For many of our students, the major highlight includes the introduction to dissections - notably the toad dissection. Here the focus is the digestive system. Other highlights include the study of electrical circuits, chemistry experiments and the ecology excursions.

The mangrove area of Brighton park, on the south side of the mouth of the Pine river and the rock platform at Woody point are two of the areas studied by the Year 9 students in their ecology unit. Various species of mangroves and other organisms of the estuary and rocky shore are the focus of hte investigation. Several species of mangroves have been identified there, and their special adaptations of the estuarine environment are studied. A cast net is often used to show the boys some of the fish and swimmer crabs in the area. Many of the rocky shore organisms are also identified, decribed and their particular adaptations to the rock platform conditions studied. the ecology unit also enables the students to spend some time examining the ecology of the pond in Victoria Park - the range of organisms that inhabit it and the impact that man is having on the pond.
