Newton's Laws of Motion

  • First Law – (Law of Inertia) An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same velocity and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

  • Second Law – (F = ma) When an object experiences an unbalanced force, the force is equal to the product of the mass of the object and its acceleration. As the force increases the acceleration increases.

  • Third Law – (Action/Reaction) For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

  • Law of Universal Gravitation The Law of Universal Gravitation is the force of attraction that exists between all objects
  • The force of gravity increases as the masses of the two objects increases
  • The force of gravity increases as the distance between the objects decreases.

Be able to interpret situations in terms of Newton ’s Laws See Booklet page 8

Be able to do problems using F=ma See booklet pages 15-16

See Text page 238.
