How can parents help their children with career decision-making?

There are a number of strategies that parents can use to help their children with career decision-making. These include:

  • understanding that career decision-making is a process during which young people need to explore a number of occupational options
  • understanding that the career counsellor’s role is to work with the student through the exploration and decision-making process
  • encouraging your children to explore a range of occupations e.g., encourage them to ask your friends about their occupation and to be aware of the occupations they encounter in their daily lives
  • learning about the options available to young people at the end of Year 12
  • learning about the tertiary entrance system.
