Over 450 boys are involved in the Instrumental Music and Speech and Drama program at Terrace. Instruction is offered for all orchestral woodwind, brass and stringed instruments, as well as for saxophone, drums and percussion, piano, and classical, rock and bass guitars, theory and musicianship and speech and drama. The teaching staff are all specialists in their particular field and many are well known and respected figures in the musical world. Instrumental students are expected to participate in a performance group in order to develop their ensemble skills and so that they will experience the satisfaction and discipline of group music making. In so doing they are also able to make a significant contribution to the musical life of the school.

In the co-curricular program private half-hour lessons are offered to students in school time (although out-of-school lessons can be arranged in some cases) and are rotated so that students do not miss the same classes each week. At the beginning of each term the student receives two timetables which give lesson times for that term. The large timetable is to be kept at home for parent information and the small timetable is to be attached inside the back of the school diary. Instrumental teachers stamp each student’s Study Diary with the date and time of his lesson so that he can be released from school lessons.
The cost of lessons, at a standard rate suggested by the Music Teachers Association, is calculated in advance each term and is added to the school fees. Students who wish to discontinue lessons do so on the understanding that term fees will not be reimbursed. Instrumental teachers will ‘make up’ lessons if they are absent for any reason or if the student is involved in school activities such as excursions, exams or retreats. If a student is ill and cannot attend his lesson, parents are required to phone this information through to the school. A message can be left at the main office (who will forward it to the music teachers) or parents can phone the Music Department directly on 07 3214 5280 or 07 3214 5273. They may also choose to phone the instrumental teacher at home. If notification is received in time the lesson will be made up. If the student simply forgets to attend the lesson or chooses not to attend without consulting the instrumental teacher, the lesson will not be made up and parents will be charged for it.
