At School you might feel more comfortable talking to a member of the SUPPORT TEAM first. |

THE SUPPORT TEAM is a group of Senior students, representative of the Terrace community in its diversity, connectedness and spirit. The underlying principle of the Team is to recognise that when young people have difficulties, they frequently turn to people closer in age in the first instance rather than approaching an adult.
To be selected on the team, students must first apply and then participate in a ‘Peer Skills’ workshop over two days. Following selection, students are supported by Stephen Muller (College Counsellor) and Peter Ernst (Campus Minister) in fulfilling their role in the College. Kids Help Line (KHL) developed the Peer Skills workshop in 1994 in response to the number of calls from young people concerned about their friends, and requests from schools for students to do work experience at KHL. Since that time the Peer Skills workshop has trained 14,000 young people across Australia and it is now sponsored by LifeLine.
The program aims to develop team members’ self awareness, knowledge and skills in areas such as problem solving, issues affecting young people, the role of values and attitudes in supportive relationships, individual strengths and when to seek adult assistance. Team members might support another student in a one-on-one capacity, they might provide social or academic mentoring, or they might become involved in proactive activities.
