The cross is the best known symbol of Christianity. The Celtic Cross will serve to focus the faith of those who observe this public statement int he grounds of St. Joseph's College, Gregory terrace, Brisbane.

The Christian Brothers have used the Celtic Cross as their crest and it features strongly on the present College school crest.

The Celtic Cross originated in Catholic Ireland and has spread throughout the world with the missionary zeal of that country. The Cross features two themes, one on each face and respresents a significant work by sculptor Catharina Hampson.

This bronze Celtic Cross stands 4.315m on a porphyry base. The arms span 1.4m. A maquette of the cross was unveiled by H.E. the Honorable Sir Walter Campbell Q.C., Governor of Queensland, on 7 November, 1988. Most Rev. Francis R. Rush, D.d., Archbishop of Brisbane, blessed the Cross at the blessing of the Br. Campbell Centre on 6 November, 1987. Br. L. T. Marshall, cfc, Provincial, opened the centre on 6 November, 1987 - Br. A. J. White, cfc, Headmaster.
