THE VISION

The Eddies van is a community of adults and students sharing the vision of Edmund Rice. In the spirit of Matthew 25, we aim to meet and journey with the poor in our community. The key to this community is Presence.

OUR CORE VALUES

Via our presence we endeavour the following:

  • To continually recognise and honour the dignity of the Human Person
  • The Nurturing of Right Relationships with our patrons and each other
  • To stand in solidarity with, and offer hope and companionship to those who experience isolation, loneliness and alienation

OUR MISSION

Through the teachings of Matthew 25 and actions of Jesus Christ and Blessed Edmund Rice, we as adults and students gather for a common purpose of being present to those on the margins of our local community.

Through our presence and hospitality we aim to meet Christ present in and appealing to us through the marginalised. We aim via our hospitality to develop genuine relationships and offer a sense of belonging and community.

Big Brekky

St. Joseph 's College conducts a ‘Big Brekky’ for homeless people in the parks and gardens of the inner city. Each ‘Big Brekky’ has a team of 5 or 6 students assisted by two members of the staff of St. Joseph 's College. The aim of the program is to enhance and make students aware of the Dignity of the person and to nurture right relationships of respect with those most marginal within our Society.

The team departs for either the Botanical Gardens, Kurilpa Point or Albert Park between 6.25 and 6.45 am each morning and returns to the College by 8 am . Two of the team cook the small breakfast while the other members of team chat to the homeless people gathered there. For safety reasons a pre-brief and de-brief of the experience will be conducted by the team leader and a mobile phone will be taken out with the team. All adult staff members involved must have a Queensland Government Blue Volunteers card if not a member of the teaching staff.
