Terry was invited as a special guest presenter at the 2004 ExpandIT Laptop Camp run at Gympie SHS by Mr Graeme Hutchinson, and was treated like the top stock she is. Read on...

I travelled up a long road to a place called Gympie. I was told by my pet human that Gympie was famous for it's gold, and that people dig for it, so I decided that if people could dig for gold, then so could a cow.

Along the way, we listened to moosic, but I cannot say i liked the bang-and twang sounds that were filling the car.

On arrival, we were set up in a computer lab. I had to show the technical helpers how to set up the projector (us cows are gifted technicians) and we set to work.

The aim was the help young Gympians (I think that is want they called themselves) to come to terms with the inner MOO.

I taught them how to talk to each other - everyone knows calves never stop talking but it is a skill to chat in cyberspace, and a great way to meet new friends.

I made some special friends amongst the little Gympians, with around 60 youngins at the laptop camp, I saw them in batches of around 20 which worked out well.

We talked about the nature of a MOO, and also discussed life, the pasture and everything there is to know about milk production.

We then mooved on to learn about building in a MOO - making a series of rooms and making them look nice by changing their appearance. We placed a noticeboard in their rooms and learned how to leave messages for each other.

Little Gympians picked this up pretty quickly and were posting like Postman Pat in no time.

There are lots of things us moos can do, and deciding what skills to learn in a 2 hour block is a little tricky. Looking back, there were lots of things we could have talked about but only got to a few - never mind, little humans can only take in so much information at a time (especially when they were up all night the night before).

We made some bots, then taught them all the important words (like chocolate, pizza, coke and cuppachup - apparently the 4 main foodgroups consumed by compooter geeks).

Terry gold-digging in Gympie In between workshops, it was feed time and free time on compooter. Most Gympians used this time to play games - having many skills in this area myself, naturally I offered myself to ride "shotgun" beside some of the players.
Terry gold-digging in Gympie Sometimes little humans need assistance in virtual culling - so I lent a hoof in particularly difficult parts of the game (as I can hold my tail up high in first-calf shooters like Hoof-Life and Quack).

Taking over the controls was not a good move as my blood-lust kicks in when I see red (some cow-culture thing that I inherited from my Great-Great-Great Uncle Manuel, who goes mad as a bull when he sees red).

A calf with an UZI is a dangerous thing and all the little Gympians that got in my way tasted lead, grenades and rockets launched from my bazookas. I think the Gympians under-estimated the speed of reflexes us cows possess.

Terry gold-digging in Gympie All sorts of things were done on the laptop camp - Gympians learnt about Terragen, GIMP, GameMaker, Flash, Video Editing, PhotoShop and networking.
Terry gold-digging in Gympie The laptop camp was by invitation (after application) only, and only students from years 8 to 10 could apply. Some nice older Gympian students were also invited as leaders, and some of the younger Gympians also ran workshops in software that they knew how to drive.
Terry gold-digging in Gympie Here is some of the crew - I had to leave late in the afternoon to return home (more hours in the car listening to my pet human's moosic ahead). How nice it was to be amongst such talented Gympians. I think that they are the GOLD I was supposed to be digging for - thanks for the invitation, it was fun.
