The Weekly Wrap

Football Wrap

1st XI

Many wouldn’t agree but part of the beauty of football is that no matter how well you play you are not guaranteed a win, especially if you don’t take the opportunities that arise during the course of a game. One mistake, a bad pass or small lapse in concentration and the game can be lost. That is precisely what happened against State High last weekend. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, defending well when necessary, we had a lapse in the second half and the opposition made the most of a rare chance.

To their credit the boys from State High defended with desperation and made it difficult for us. Their goalkeeper had an outstanding game making a number of very good saves including one out of the box from Byron McLeod late in the second half that would have seen Terrace draw level.

Keegan Sullivan was once again causing the opposition a lot of problems with his pace and directness. Aiden Cathcart was once again very solid and proved his worth to the squad starting at left back and then moving into the central defensive role when Will Lalic came off injured.

This week we play Churchie away and are looking forward to a good battle that will hopefully see Terrace back on the winners' list.

In closing, I must say how impressed I am with the support the team gets from their school-mates at Tennyson. The atmosphere is great and it’s a good motivator for the team when the crowd is in full voice.

A/B Program

On the weekend we had some great results against State High across the A/B program. Our 7s had a tough day where they will feel they had a missed opportunities to get some success. The 8s, 9s and 10s displayed positive improvements from the match day at Nudgee. The 11s and 2nds are understanding where they need to improve leading into this week's matches vs Churchie. All squads are are very much looking forward to another tough weekend of football, where we will look to build on this season's positive start.

Tennis Wrap

This week the Terrace Tennis teams play Churchie in matches from Years 5 through to 12, though there will be internal and supplementary matches. It is always a great round of tennis played in excellent spirit and the program looks forward to the challenge ahead.

The results from the round v Brisbane State High School were excellent in our Years 7 through to 12. In all matches the sportsmanship by the red and black was of the highest order. A big thank you to Mr Chris Rolph of Brisbane Boys’ College for allowing our Years 5 and 6 teams to play BBC again in another round of competitive tennis. Playing a high level of opposition is a great opportunity to progress.

Well done to the Years 5E and 5F teams who defeated the BBC 5C and 5D teams in an effort that highlights the quality and depth in our junior school. The game day coaches have highlighted in their communication that they are particularly pleased with how hard our young Terracians fought in every game against our opposition.

1st IV

This week saw us in another tense tussle against BSHS. Over the past few years this team has always been a very tough task for us. Our boys once again shone through under pressure.

After the singles we were 2 rubbers all with Bryce Robinson and Stephen Stoddart both winning comfortably at 1 and 2 while Xavier Lim and Yosua Lumbanradja both lost at 3 and 4.

At 2 rubbers all, 4 sets all and down by 2 games, once again it came down to the doubles. This season we have won our most doubles, but mostly in very close encounters. This match would be no different.

After the first round of doubles, Xavier and Steve won 7-5, 6-1 while Bryce and Yosua went down in a close 5-7, 6-7 encounter after having 2 set points in the tiebreak. This put us at 3 rubbers all, 6 sets all and up by 2 games. The pressure was once again on. We were down to the last 2 doubles as has occurred in the last 2 rounds.

Again our boys stepped up to the mark, Steve and Xavier went on to win in straight sets after a tussle in the first set. Bryce and Yosua won their first set 6-1 but lost intensity and momentum in the second set losing it 3-6.  Now they needed to pull together and inspire each other. This is exactly what they did. They stepped up, increased intensity and played more for each other to then go on for another hard fought out and memorable victory.

This week will be another difficult match for us against a developing Churchie side and with our team ravaged by long term injury, it is clear we are going to have to fight for a win in every match we play this season. However, if we can continue to compete under pressure, as in recent weeks, we have a chance of winning the more difficult rounds as we continue through this year’s Tennis season.

Team of the Week

The 2nd IV who defeated a very strong Brisbane State High School. With the top two teams in the cCllege being hit hard by injury, the 2nd IV really stood up this week, led by Terrace Tennis Captain George Campbell. The team consisting of George Campbell, Sota Horiuchi, Tom Brannigan and William Campbell did a brilliant job to take their match in such a comprehensive fashion 5/11/70 to BSHS 1/2/15.

Doubles Pairing of the Week

The 7E and 7F teams took on Nudgee at Deagon in a tight contest against two evenly matched sides. Putting into practice the time spent developing their doubles play at training, Terrace had success in the doubles and reverse doubles fixtures claiming 6 out of 8 wins, only going down in tiebreaks in the losing matches. Of particular note were Jacob Tedford and Harry McCall (7E) who showed tremendous fight in their doubles match, coming back from 2-5, winning the next five games straight to take out the match 7-5 (Doubles Pair of the Week). Terrace continued their good form into the singles fixtures and competed well playing some positive tennis. Terrace won all bar one of the singles rubbers with Harry McCall and Ryan Barnes (7F) winning their matches 6-0 and Jack Butterfield (7E) winning 6-2 to close out a successful day for both Terrace sides. Special mention to Jake Collins and Finn O’Brien from the 7D team who won their matches 6-0, 6-2 and who also showed great sportsmanship team work while doing so.

Play of the Day

Going in to the reverse doubles and with the match totally in the balance, the 1st IV for the third round in a row, held off in extremely challenging circumstances to take the match and remain undefeated, thus leading the GPS 1st IV Tennis Competition going in to Round 4. A 1st IV fixture can last from anywhere between 5 to 8 hours and has many roller coaster moments in terms of emotions. This match could have gones either way, as could have the matches against BBC and Nudgee in the earlier rounds. To win these close encounters you must be doing a number of things right and for anyone who has been at the matches supporting these boys, you would be able to identify them. Grit and determination are stand outs and there is a strong desire to represent the College to the very best that they can. As the squad moves further into the competition one thing is assured, the boys will always give everything they have and you cannot ask for anything more than that.
