Welcome
to St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace.
Our College World Wide Web
Site, like our Prospectus, attempts to outline for you some of the many
facets of life in the vibrant community of students, staff and parents.
Our College
Mission calls each of us to "continuously create our community...through
our gifts, faith and personal involvement".
Our community is one striving
for excellence. We go forward, building on the history of our first one
hundred and twenty three years of service for young people. Our key action
is Catholic faith, personal formation and scholarly development. Our boast
is that we do the simple things and we do them well. It is in our nature
as a Christian Brothers' School
In 1993, Dr. Brendan McManus
was appointed as the first lay Principal of Terrace.
The Christian Brothers still retain ownership of the school and the ethos
which permeated its existence from its earliest days is still very much
in evidence.
Terrace has been well served
throughout its history by many extraordinary teachers - religious and
lay, men and women. Their efforts, supported by the co-operation and understanding
of the parents, have enabled many boys to attain their full potential.
We are justifiably proud of our achievements and the enthusiasm of our
students attests to the school spirit which is second to none.
The Christian Brothers have
always been proud of their non-selective enrolment policy, and this remains
in force at Terrace. A small number of outstanding students are awarded
Academic Scholarships based on the results of competitive testing.
The Founder of the Christian
Brothers, Br Edmund Ignatius Rice, was known for never excluding the sons
of parents who could not afford even his meagre school fees. Terrace is
proud to continue the practice of negotiating mutually acceptable fees
with parents who find themselves financially over-stretched.
Terrace Old Boys provide leadership
in religious, business, government and academic circles and perform creditably
in cultural and sporting pursuits.
Both Most Rev. William Morris,
Bishop of Toowoomba, and Most Rev. Francis Rush, former Archbishop of
Brisbane, are Old Boys and large numbers of priests - diocesan and religious
- as well as Religious Brothers, have been educated here.
An impressive number of students
has been awarded prizes, distinctions and scholarships over the years
- among them 15 young men who have gone on to be awarded the coveted Rhodes
Scholarship.
