Basketball - First V

Terrace First V Report

2007

The Terrace First V finished the GPS season in fourth place with a credible 5 win / 3 loss record. Considering that the team had only one win from the first four games the final result was a great achievement. The First V also competed in the 2007 Champion School of Queensland competition finishing in ninth position.

Once again the departing seniors have done great service to the College with their contribution to the basketball program. Team captain Damien Moulton was awarded the Best and Fairest player for 2007. His ability to knock down the three point shot was a huge asset to the team but it was his new found ability to get to the basket that made him a more complete player in 2007. Brian Funder won the Most Improved Player award as he improved his perimeter shooting, ball handling and defence to a level that he cemented a starting spot in every game. Thomas Pyke won the Team Man award for his dedication to training and willingness to make sacrifices for the good of the team. Patrick Allen battled a groin injury in the early stages of the season which hindered his movement and speed out on the court. When this injury improved Pat controlled the tempo of the games in Terrace’s favour with his outstanding ability to create for his team mates. Harry Brigg’s controlled the paint and became a legitimate scoring threat in the second half of the season. Harry was well supported by Rory Crittenden off the bench. Jonathan Williams showed great improvement in the second half of the season giving the team a lift when he entered the game with aggressive defence and the ability to get to the basket. Max Stephen’s played like the veteran he was. Max was versatile in that he could slot into any of the front line positions and make a positive contribution. Alex Anthony, Toby White, Dominic Jordan and Dylan Nagle were great contributors at practice and had a fine season in the Second V.

The boys in the squad that will return next year received a taste of GPS First V action and will be better for the experience next season. In particular Anthony Kelly, Thomas Malloy, Liam Barnes, Dominic Gallagher and Peter Mollison showed they will form the nucleus of the 2008 team.

I would like to thank the coaching staff that supported the team this season. Matthew Hamilton-Smith again made a great commitment to the team in his assistant coaching role imparting his excellent knowledge to the group. Mr Pat Howell put in countless hours as assistant coach / team manager / bus driver / team cook and any thing else that came up. Aleks Baruksopulo joined the team this year and provided valuable assistance with his input with skill development at training and his leadership of the Terrace club basketball program.

Thanks also go to Nicholas Marchesi for his filming and video production for the team’s feedback/ video sessions.
