GPS & CIC Basketball Reports

2008

2008 was yet another successful year for the Terrace Hoopaholics. Basketball continues to grow at the College with participation rising, new and old initiatives continuing and the winning percentage maintained at a high level across the board.

The students wanting to be a part of the basketball program was again high this year with Terrace hosting 19 GPS basketball teams, five Club teams and six CIC basketball teams accommodating for over 240 students. It is always encouraging at the start of the season to see a large number of students wanting to participate in the basketball program.

In 2008, basketball at Terrace started in February with the start of the club basketball season. We entered five teams into the BBI competition to compete against other club teams around Brisbane. The purpose behind club basketball is to ensure that skills learnt from previous seasons can be practiced and allowed the basketball enthusiasts to be able to play all year round. Out of the five teams entered in the competition, three made the finals in their divisions and two of those teams (U16 Div 2 & 3) went on the win their championships. Congratulations to all the students participating in club basketball this year. It was seen to achieve its purpose.

Along with Club Basketball, the annual GT Hoopaholic Basketball Camp was again held prior to the GPS and CIC seasons. This camp went for four days in the June/July holidays with a chance for the boys who don’t necessarily play club basketball, to start from the beginning and learn fundamental skills along with revisiting game play. This was again very successful not only from the visual feedback but also the comments from the players themselves.

The GPS season kicked off on the 9 th of August for ten longs weeks. From here, every team were in full season mode, training at least twice a week. Overall the season was successful but especially ending on a high note: for the first time in six years Terrace were able to clean sweep Toowoomba Grammar school 17-0. Terrace basketball ended with a winning percentage of 71% making basketball the most successful sport at Terrace. Congratulation to the 13D, 13C, 14B and 15B teams and their coaches, who finished the season with the undefeated record.

Terrace had six teams in the CIC competition and had eight fixtures against various schools around Brisbane. The focus for the CIC programs is on skill development and team work. Congratulations to the CIC players for their participation and enthusiasm in the basketball program. Furthermore I would like to congratulate the 6As who finished their season undefeated.

Another successful season could not have been achieved without the help and support of the GT Hoopaholic community. Thanks to all the Club Basketball coaches and parents for helping out with this endeavour. Thank-you also to all the GPS and CIC specialist coaches. Without your knowledge, guidance and support of the students, the program would not have been as successful as it was. Special thanks to Martin Kelly and the Basketball Supporters Committee for their continual support to me and for also organising a wonderful basketball dinner to end the season. The committee puts in a lot hard work behind the scenes for their sons and the programs benefit. Thanks must also go to Mr. Peter Chapman and Mr. Michael Broad – thank-you for your support and help when needed. Lastly thanks to the basketball players at Terrace for again setting the standard to which other GPS and CIC basketball schools measure their own performances.
