2008 INTERHOUSE CROSS COUNTRY

The 2008 Interhouse Cross Country Championships for the Luke Harrop Memorial Trophy was competed in unusually hot, humid and dusty conditions – but as usual all runners attacked the course with great enthusiasm, skill and spirit. Following a very spirited Interhouse Swimming competition, it was clear that the competitive juices were again flowing on Friday May 2, 2008. With the Barrett House drums beating aloud, every House set about to secure maximum points from both the Age Championship races and House races.

The Championships began at 11.30am with the Under 10, 11 and 12 Age Championship races. These young athletes put their heart and soul into their performance and produced some exhilarating races and finishes. It was a terrific start to the Championships. The standard was so high that the Under 10 Age Champion (James Mullins) registered the fastest 2km time until the Under 16 House event - a remarkable achievement and a sign of a very sound foundation for Terrace Cross Country into the future.

With our CIC runners producing such extraordinary performances in oppressive conditions, it was now up to the Secondary runners to match their junior compatriots. With all Age Championship races filled with maximum House numbers, it was obvious that the outcome of the races were not a forgone conclusion - quiet the opposite. The races produced a number of new champions while also surfacing a new breed of runners that will again provide Terrace with a Cross Country team that will be a force to contend with come GPS and CIC Championship time.

Following the Age Championship races were the Interhouse 2km races for all Secondary students. This provided each House to respond to the challenge that they were set – to run in memory of Luke Harrop and to run in a fashion that honors his name, his achievements, his family and his wonderful Trophy. Each year I note what a marvelous response that all the student body gave to that challenge. On this occasion I cannot. It is extremely unfortunate that a very small number of Year 7, 9, 11 and 12 students saw fit to run their own selfish race and take something special out the day and turn it sour. I trust that it will be next year that I am able to report that all races were run in a fashion that the entire Terrace community could be proud of.

Despite missing the event again this year, Luke’s father, Mr. Russell Harrop was delighted to hear that the event was entered into so enthusiastically by so many of the student body. My thanks go to the student body, House Leaders, House Deans, staff and maintenance staff for their continuing co-operation and support in forging together another wonderful Interhouse event.
