Gymnastics at Terrace
Men's Artistic Gymnastics is comprised of six apparatus: floor, pommel, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.
The gymnastics program starts in Term 1 and continues through to Term 4 when the GPS competition is held. Students from Years 8 to 12 are welcome to participate.
The GPS Championships are split into three divisions. Division 3 requires gymnasts to undertake Level 4 compulsory routines, Division 2 requires Level 5 compulsory routines, and Division 1 requires gymnasts to compete using Level 7 optional routines. Gymnasts compete at their ability level. If a Year 8 boy is a Level 7 gymnast then he competes in Division 1 and conversely if a Year 12 boy is a Level 4 gymnast he competes in Division 3.
The lead-up competitions start in mid Term 3 and continue through to the first weeks of Term 4. There are usually 5 lead-up competitions. These competitions have one school verse another across all Divisions. The day is divided into three sessions. In Session 1, for example, Terrace may verse Nudgee, in Session 2 BGS may verse TSS and so on, and all Divisions are competing concurrently. In the GPS Championship all schools verse each other. The day is again split into three sessions but in Session 1 all schools’ Division 3 teams compete, in Session 2 all schools’ Division 2 teams compete and in Session 3 all schools’ Division 1 teams compete.
A GPS team is made up of 5 gymnasts. Depending on numbers Terrace may field more than one team in each Division at the GPS Championships. Every boy who participates will have an opportunity to compete on at least one or more apparatus.
GYMNASTICS SUPPORTERS GROUP
The Terrace Gymnastics Supporters’ Committee exists to assist the development and promotion of the gymnastics program at Terrace. Gymnastics is one oldest GPS sports and Terrace started competing back in 1916 and won premiership for the first time in 1919. In fact College Hall was a prime centre for gymnastics in Queensland in the early 20th century.
The GPS Gymnastics Championship competition is scheduled for October. Prior to that day there are five lead up competitions at the end of Term 3 and the start of Term 4. Competition is based on the six Olympic apparatus – pommel, rings, parallel bars, high bar and vault.
As well as assisting the school with the gymnastics program the supporters’ committee also runs the annual gymnastics dinner and the information open day. Meetings are scheduled during the year but most of the work email.
Anyone interested in gymnastics or in being part of the committee is welcome contact John Taylor on 0419 743 374 or bnjtaylor@bigpond.com.au.
