TERRACE TENNIS
2008
The 2008 Tennis calendar begins with the Semester One Coaching Program that the Fancutt Academy conducts on behalf of the College. Mr Guy Fisher who coached many of our players last season will coordinate this program and will act as Head Coach of the program. The program is conducted at the College courts in Victoria Park.
The 2008 TERRACE TENNIS competition for Years 5 – 7 will commence in Term 3. Tennis players from Years 5 – 7 will play in the CIC competition – scheduled for 7 rounds from July 26. Once again coaching of our CIC and Year 8 teams will be the priority of the College. These players are now encouraged to take the opportunity of the Semester One Coaching – details of which appear at the conclusion of this package. In Term 3, the CIC teams (8) will receive 2 afternoon team training sessions and 1 Activity session per week. The GPS season begins on August 11 with age group instruction commencing at the start of Term 3.
The results in the CIC competition in 2007 were tremendously encouraging as was the enjoyment and improvement shown throughout the season. Each team played great Tennis all the way through the season and every player in every team has stepped up and improved on their Tennis form from last year. The results show that 3 of our 8 teams went through undefeated and the other 5 teams maintained a positive win-loss record. The undefeated teams where teams 1, 2, and 5. Congratulations to all the players in these teams on an outstanding effort. The most amazing thing was that these teams were completely dominant and displayed a quality of tennis that was incredible. Teams 4 and 8 (our Grade 5 teams) did us proud with solid performances week in week out. It is always a hard transition for a Grade 5 player coming into such a competitive environment. All players from these teams learned about every aspect of CIC Tennis and will be much more prepared in the years to come. Teams 3, 6 and 7 played exceptional Tennis also, with great results most weeks.
The results in the GPS competition were also very positive. Numerous teams finished in the top 3 places of their division which was outstanding. Overall, Terrace finished the GPS season in third place behind BGS and BBC in terms of the overall results from all teams on a win/loss ratio. This was a very rewarding achievement.
To continue with the momentum of the last few years, a number of initiatives and coaching opportunities are offered. Firstly, the Coaching Program in Semester One is vital for all players to avail themselves of in order to enhance their skills and techniques. These classes also provide the coaching staff with up to date knowledge of players’ development and improvement. As well the coaching staff is attempting to put together a progam of matches for all year levels in order to attain a clear level of player ability – which will be helpful when considering player selections. Along with these are the College Championships which are held for every age group. The dates for these are as follows:
-
Under 10, 11 and 12 Age Championships – 18/5/08
-
Years 5 – 7 Open Championship – 18/5/08
-
Finals of the Age and Open Championships - (Years 5, 6 and 7) – 25/5/08
- Under 13 Age Championship – 25/5/08
- Under 14, 15, 16 and 17 Age Championships – 4/5/08
- Years 8 – 12 Open Championship – 27/7/08
Following the GPS round of Tennis against BGS and BBC, it was clear that a major difference between our schools was that the Grammar and BBC players were far more consistent on court than the Terrace players and that they were more experienced in match play. It is crucial that if Terrace Tennis is to raise the bar of its performances, more players need to have a racquet in their hand well before the season starts. I appreciate many of the players are involved in a variety of other activities throughout the year. However I also see so many frustrated Terrace tennis players on court – frustrated because they cannot play the way they want to, due mainly to their limited preparation.
The following chart provides the TERRACE TENNIS Coaching Program for Semester One that students from all year levels may choose to nominate for.
