Interhouse Track and Field Report

INTERHOUSE TRACK and FIELD REPORT

2007

.

Despite the RNA Royal Show struggling to attract the usual attendance numbers due to the flu epidemic, the Terrace Interhouse Track and Field Carnival had no such trouble and was inundated with a student body full of enthusiasm and excitement. With House Deans reporting excellent attendance rates it was clear that all Houses were intent on providing the most competitive Interhouse competition for some years. And so it was.

Congratulations to Mr. McCulloch, House Captains Dan Cooney and James Blair-Swannell and Mahoney House on regaining the Br. W. M. Reidy Cup for Interhouse Track and Field.

The final placing and points for 2007 were as followed:

  1. MAHONEY HOUSE 1,649 points
  2. KEARNEY HOUSE 1,591 points
  3. REIDY HOUSE 1,460 points
  4. BARRETT HOUSE 1,414 points
  5. TREACY HOUSE 1,409 points
  6. WINDSOR HOUSE 1,386 points

The concept of the Interhouse Carnival is based on the Corinthian Spirit of participation – but due to the intense House rivalry it is participation where everyone strives to do their very best not for themselves but for their House. This distinction is so evident in all the events held on the day – from the tug of war tussles; sack races; sprint races; middle distance races; relays; throws and jumps. There is certainly no emphasis on winning. Every student that participated in an event received at least one point for their House. Those who were able to use their talents to the highest level received more points.

The spirit of performing at ones best was clearly evident in the 100 metre sprint races where every year level race was just that – a race. This competitive nature gave the Track and Field coaching staff enormous encouragement with many top athletes producing fine performances. These performances provided the coaching staff with the difficult job of organizing the annual Terrace Gift competitors – a handicap race featuring the winner of each division one race per age group. The following athletes lined up for the prestigious Terrace Gift:

Year 5 Conor MacNamara

Year 6 Sam Cross

Year 7 James Gilbert and Lewis Robson

Year 8 Patrick Gallagher

Year 9 Giacomo Dibartolomeo

Year 10 Lachlan Maranta-Plowman

Year 11 James Cornish

Year 12 Fraser Stevenson

In a tremendous race in front of the entire school, Lachlan Maranta powered home across the line in first place with Patrick Gallagher second and Lewis Robson third.

Events like the Interhouse carnivals are successful due to the enthusiastic involvement of the student body as well as the cooperation and efficiency of all the members of staff. Thanks to all members of staff for their continued support of the Interhouse program – along with the Tennyson ground staff, the members of the TLG, Optima medical staff and BBQ personnel. Special thanks to Mr. Wharton and Mr. Humphrys who, in my absence, managed all aspects of the carnival with complete confidence and control.

Finally, congratulations to the entire Terrace Family who decided to put their energies into making this years Carnival a huge success and a carnival to remember.

Mr. Michael Broad
