Terrace Volleyball 2007
Round #8 Vs Ipswich Grammar School (IGS)
Last weekend we played the final fixture of the GPS season. We played against Ipswich Grammar and the day was a successful one for Terrace . On the day Terrace won 6 from 11 matches. This completes a fantastic season for Terrace Volleyball with a record number of players and teams for Terrace. The skill level, participation and win/loss record reflects the enthusiasm that our players, coaches and parents have had throughout the season. Most of teams placed 1 st or second in their division of GPS competition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the coaches for their efforts throughout the season in developing our players into competitive teams that enjoy Volleyball passionately. To Mr Luke Robba (13B), Mr Luke Gribble(13 A), Mr Will Kirby and Jon Bray (14C), Ms Kirsten Allingham (14 B), Mr Russel Muir (14 A), Mr David Mandall (15 B), Mr Tim Stephens (15 A), Mr Nick Jones and Mr Tim Baartz (16B), Mr David Shanahan (16A), Mr Michael Connolly (Open 2 nd) & Mr Martin Rogalski (Open 1 st VI) thank you!
On the last day of term, this Friday lunch, the 1 st VI will cook the Annual End of Season Volleyball BBQ for all GPS Volleyball Players and Coaches. The BBQ & a drink will cost $1, and be held under Mt Sion. I hope all teams have enjoyed Volleyball throughout GPS Season 2007. A full copy of the season 2007 will be posted on the Terrace Volleyball Web-site after the holidays.

1 st VI Volleyball Report – The 1 st VI played with focus to win their final match for Terrace, 3 sets to 0. Terrace started the match with a string of combination plays which kept IGS guessing. They had one very aggressive hitter who was able to find the floor with some powerful kill shots. HARRY BRIGGS, PETER MOLLISON and TOM ELLIOTT worked hard in defence to shut out the IGS raids in the first set. Some well rehearsed play saw MAX STEPHENS win several points through quick “A” balls and Terrace won the first set 25 – 18. As the match progressed Terrace dominated, with clear communication by captain PAT ALLAN steering our team to success. JACOB McEVOY and BROCK CUNNLIFFE contributed by offering Terrace great variey in attack and IGS struggled to defend 4 or 5 attacking options on each play. SIMN FOAT continued his role of receiving serves with an extraordinary rate of accuracy. It would be fair to say that he is the unsung hero of the team. Bench players AARON PREVITE AND JAMES LARKIN also found enough court time to win points for Terrace. It would be fair to say that this Champion Team beat several teams of champions through the season. On be half of the College I would like to congratulate the 1 st VI and their Coach Mr Martin Rogalski on placing outright 2 nd in the 1 st VI GPS competition, who were beaten only once all season. The sportsmanship, dedication at training and work ethic on court has presented an excellent role model for younger players at Terrace. It is the quality of being humble in success that has most impressed me. Thank you gentlemen!
Round #7 V ACGS
Last weekend was our most successful round of the season with Terrace winning an incredible 10 out of a possible 11 matches. I would like to make special mention of the 15 B team who had their first win of the season. Despite not winning until this point these players have trained with discipline, enjoyed a great sense of mateship and displayed the quality of perseverance that is mark of true champions. To their Coach Mr David Mandall, and to all the players in that team I congratulate you. Mr Mandall even modelled perfectly, the skill of diving for a ball at training on Tuesday this week. Well almost perfectly. He split his chin open and required 7 stitches. The 1 st VI beat Churchie in convincing fashion with the variety in attacking options and more aggressive defence the key to success. Terrace won the match 3 sets to 0.
As this weekend is the last match of the season I would like to remind all captains of the importance of good sportsmanship in defeat, and in victory. It is also the appropriate gesture for the captain of each team to organise his players to put together a small gift as a token of appreciation for their coaches. Players are reminded of the importance of returning the playing jerseys to their team Captain with any knee pads at the end of their match this Saturday. On the last day of term next Friday lunch, the 1 st VI will cook the Annual End of Season Volleyball BBQ for all GPS Volleyball Players and Coaches. The BBQ & a drink will cost $1, and be held under Mt Sion. I hope all teams are successful this weekend and enjoy their last opportunity to play in GPS Season 2007.

1 st VI Volleyball Report – The 1 st VI played with passion last weekend to complete a successful weekend of sport for Terrace. We won the match 3 sets to 0. However Churchie showed great courage and determination in fighting for each point. The first set saw Churchie take an early lead which we negated with well-rehearsed combination plays. The percentage of serves landing in was a vast improvement from Terrace players and this momentum saw us win the first set 25 – 18. The second set saw Churchie come out fighting and they were very aggressive in attack at the net with powerful hits. Good communication in the front court for Terrace by MAX STEPHENS,. HARRY BRIGGS and PETER MOLLISON proved to be the difference with our players “triple blocking” Churchie’s attack and Terrace winning that set 25 – 21. Smart play by Captain PAT ALLAN and all on court players calling for attacking options confused opposing defence and allowed JACOB McEVOY and BROCK CUNLLIFFE to contribute by winning points. As usual SIMON FOAT was reliable as the “LIBERO” (specialist passer). To any younger players, the importance of this player cannot be made clearer as it allows a team to set up aggressive attacking plays. TOM NOYE (16A) made his debut in the 1 st VI and showed composure and aggression in hitting. This weekend our 1 st VI will have the opportunity to secure Terrace’s first GPS Premiership for 2007. It would be fantastic for any of the younger players to support our 1 st VI as they strive for victory this Saturday. I will guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Round #6 Vs Anglican Church Grammar School (ACGS)
This weekend we play Churchie at Home. The venue for games will be Campbell Centre (Under 13, 16 & Open Teams), and Waterford place (Under 14 & 15 Teams). We look forward to our last home match of the season at Terrace. Last weekend our younger teams struggled against State High, and our Senior Teams found success. The 1 st VI beat State High in a “Cliff Hanger”, in a match marred by unforced errors. Our team eventually found composure to win the last 8 points of the match to win 3 sets to 2. As Saturday is the Head of the River and Volleyball players cannot attend due to their fixtures, we as a club wish rowers, particularly the 1 st VIII all the best on Saturday at Kawana.
I was most impressed with the resolve of the 16 A Volleyball Team which has gelled into a well organised outfit throughout the season. The skill level and knowledge of the game from these layers reflects a genuine passion and commitment to the sport. The level of performance by this team has been impressive with their Coach Mr David Shanahan instilling a solid work ethic into these payers.

1 st VI Volleyball Report – The 1 st VI won last Saturday by the narrowest of margins. The team line-up was changed due to the absence of Captain Pat Allan. This allowed AARON PREVITE (16 A) to step into the role of team setter. AARON handled this challenge extremely well. LEWIS CHAMBERS (15 A) also stepped into the team this week due to injuries and displayed great maturity to contribute at the net throughout the match. The first set was won by State High, and with their backs to the wall Terrace clawed back to win the second set 25 – 18. The third set went the way of State High due unforced errors and a lapse in concentration from our team. The fourth set went the way of Terrace as we started to gain momentum. JACOB McEVOY was hitting the ball well enough to secure points at the net. The final set saw State High lead at one stage 11 -7. It was at this point in the match, the teamrefocussed and knew that mentally they had to be tough. The team responded by winning the next 8 points straight to secure the set 15 -11, and the match 3 sets to 2. Our 1 st VI will need to improve their execution and mental focus if they are to be victorious this week. So far our 1 st VI have lost only one match and are attempting to keep this record in tact.

Round #5 Vs Brisbane State High
This weekend we play Brisbane Sate High at BSHS SPORTS CENTRE EDMONSTONE ST STH BRIS (F.Block). We look forward to a competitive round against State High. Last weekend we battled rather challenging conditions at BBC with oppressive heat to compete in a number of very close games. The 1 st VI beat BBC by utilising the many attacking options at their disposal. With such hot weather I remind all players of the importance of taking a filled water bottle to trainings and matches.
I was most impressed with the sportsmanship displayed by one of our under 14 players who received questionable call by a referee on match point. The result was that under a high pressure situation this student did the right thing. He did not complain. He accepted the referee’s decision with grace. Whilst disappointed with the call, as his team mates where. He went straight up to the opposition, shook their hands and congratulated them on a good match. This small action showed a maturity that was beyond his years. He knows who he is, and should be proud of the way in which he behaved on that occasion.

1 st VI Volleyball Report – The 1 st VI put together an impressive display on Saturday as the beat BBC 3 sets to 1. The most please aspect of the match was that the Terrace side had 4 or 5 options in attack on most points. All of the hitters anticipated play and prepared their approach early in each rally.. The fist set was close with Terrace winning 25 – 22. In the second set some of our players lacked the intensity to defend BBC raids and we lost that set 25 – 23. In the third and fourth sets the Terrace side regained control of the match with all players contributing to success. Special mention should go to SIMON FOAT who received serves with a 100% success rate in the third set. Many of the more complex plays such as “Pipes”, “slides”, “A” and “B” combinations were used to great success. JACOB McEVOY and TOM ELIOTT were very impressive with their outside hitting, whilst MAX STEPHENS howed great agility and speed to kill plays at the net. HARRY BRIGGS AND PETER MOLLISON worked tirelessly to deny BBC many of their attacking options. With bench players being used, PAT ALLAN was able to change roles and enjoy some hitting with an impressive “Kill” shot which landed before the 3 m attack line. All players will need to concentrate for the full match if they are to deny state High victory this Saturday. Our 1 st Team has beaten every team except one for the season so far and are looking to keep this impressive record in tact.

Round #4 Vs BBC
This weekend we play BBC at BBC (Toowong). We look forward to a competitive round against BBC. Last weekend we had an extremely successful day against TGS. We won 9 out of a possible 11 games. The 1 st VI beat TGS in an impressive display of the best team performance of the season so far. One of the highlights of the day was the improved performance of the 13 B Team coached by Mr Robba, who came back from 1 set down to win their first set of the season and went on to win their first match.

1 st VI Volleyball Report – This was the best performance by our 1 st VI with the team dominant in most facets of play. The key to success in this match was a controlled confidence and clear communication. Execution of skills such as SIMON FOAT’S passing, PAT ALLAN’S setting, and the work at the net by HARRY BRIGGS, PETER MOLLISON, JACOB McEVOY AND TOM ELLIOTT was impressive to say the least. Coach MARTIN ROGALSKI put together a clever game plan which utilised our strengths to ensure our defensive play kept BBC at bay. With very few unforced errors this side won each set – 25 – 17, 25 -21 & 25 -16. With success in it’s sight it was the first time bench player SEB ROGALSKI (Under 15) had been used, and AARON PREVITE came on in the final set to direct play at the net. TGS was one of two games we lost last year. We are looking very competitive in 2007.

Round #2 V Brisbane Grammar
The GPS Volleyball season opened last weekend with Terrace fielding a record number of teams. The results from last Saturday were extremely pleasing with the best results against Nudgee for years. What was truly awesome was the number of students that came to see the 1 st VI. Your vocal support showed true school spirit and has set the benchmark high for all Terrace students to answer the call to cheer on their mates no matter what the sport or activity throughout 2007.
The under 13 Teams had their first match and despite not winning, made goood progress with their skills and should feel encouraged about their efforts. The Under 14 A, B and C Teams were too strong for their opponents and won each match in convincing style. This is the first year in the history of Terrace Volleyball that we have fielded a “C” team. It is pleasing to provide the opportunity for students that want to play volleyball the chance to participate. It is obvious that the skills sessions these players attended in the preseason have made a difference. The Under 15 A team were very clinical in their match with Sebastian Rogalski and Lewis Chambers leading the way at the net and Gerard Carroll organising play as the setter.
The under 16 A Team were exceptional with Aaron Private showing strong on court leadership and allplayers contributing in attack and defence. The Open 2 nd VI won their match and showed a strong willingness to play attacking Volleyball. Rob Mystek, Matthew Dempsey, Brian Funder and Narangi Rangihuna were strong performers.
1 st VI Volleyball Report –
The first round of the GPS Volleyball season gave our players the opportunity to put together 5 months of hard preseason work into practice. Terrace opened their account with a convincing win in the first set with Max Stephens and Harry Briggs dominant at the net 25 -15. The big improver for the team was Yr 11 student Peter Mollison who made no errors in his 13 spiking efforts at the net. The quiet achiever of the team was Simon Foat whose service reception was near to perfect (29/32), allowingmany attacking raids. Terrace continued in the second set by winning 25 -17. The third set saw a lapse in concentration and Terrace narrowly lost this sets 25 – 18. The fourth set saw a change in pace as the Terrace players worked hard to close the match with a 25 – 14 win.
The team realises that this week they must be at their best, but that they are more than capable of beating Brisbane Grammar this weekend. For anyone who attended this match last year and there were approximately 700 people who they knew that this is the showcase match of the competition with two of the best sides in the competition doing battle. The 1 st VI match starts at 12:30 at BGS, Howell Centre. All support will help Terrace to lift its performance. We hope to see you there! I would urge players to be aware of their game time, and that they should arrive at their venue 30 minutes prior toplay. I would encourage all Volleyball players to come and support the 1 st VI this Saturday.
Canteen –
All players and supporters are reminded that the canteen operates for all home matches to provide refreshments. I would like to thank Mrs Anne Allan, Mrs Jane Briggs and Mrs Susan Stephens for organising and running the canteen. If any parents are willing to assist in the running of the canteen their assistance would be greatly appreciated. The contact for the canteen is Mrs Anne Allan (M) 0417046227.
