The Gregory Terrace Foundation was established in 1986 as the permanent fundraising body for the College.
Its purpose is to raise funds through the generosity of the members of the Terrace community.
It is a public company limited by guarantee and has named status in Australian income tax legislation as a Deductible Gift Recipient.
Through the generosity of the Terrace community, the Foundation has contributed significantly to the College with grants from its Building Fund for capital developments and from its Charitable Fund for educational allowances and other community projects.
Mr Brian Flannery is the Chairman of the Foundation - he reports below on the Foundation’s activities and achievements in 2006.
Chairman’s Report (Reproduced in College Annual 2006)
The opening of Waterford Place will be the culmination of a new era in development for Terrace. This learning centre (the renovated RACQ building in Water Street) represents an opportunity to pursue excellence in teaching and learning process for year 10 students in transition to senior schooling.
Much planning has been underway during the year, with Mr Ray Celegato and staff selected to commence innovative and exciting programs when the learning centre is opened for the 2007 school year.
In May, in the Chapel of the Holy Family, the College community and 50 veterans and their families attended the unveiling of the World War 2 honour board in recognition of Terrace Old Boys who served in that conflict. This project was funded by the generosity of donors to the Foundation and the assistance of the Australian Government Commemoration Program. In my address at the unveiling ceremony, I said that the Foundation had utilised funds for this project from the bequest of the late J J Mahoney (GT 1957) whose father Professor James Mahoney was listed on the board.
The Foundation’s operations functioned successfully during the year. Following the strategy meeting held in 2005, the board designed a new information brochure on the role and activities of the Foundation which is forwarded to new parents to the College with advice of an offer of enrolment for their sons. Also, the College introduced an inaugural information evening for coming year 5 parents which was well attended.
The main fundraising activities centred on the capital (rolling) campaign with parents pledging to a stream of annual or quarterly voluntary gifts to the building fund. The Wills/Bequest program was re-launched with a new brochure which will be widely circulated to the Terrace community.
In conjunction with the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association, the Foundation ran the Annual Appeal and once again was well supported by the Terrace family.
Directors interviewed one hundred and thirty-five new parents with boys entering years 5 and 8 in 2007 and 2008 respectively to discuss the role of the Foundation and to seek a commitment through a regular voluntary donation during their son(s) association with Terrace.
I am pleased to advise that the campaign total of outstanding pledges increased by 14 per cent to $4.2 million this year. While the Foundation has continued its on-going assistance to the GT125 project (Chapel and Learning Centre), it has commenced a long-term commitment in funding the Waterford Place development.
It was pleasing to welcome back as a director, Dr Paul Bartley, who has served on the board previously and brings to the Foundation a wealth of experience in charitable service to the wider community. I wish to thank my fellow directors for their support and contribution to the on-going work of the Foundation in another successful year of operations and to Mr Cameron Gibson, the Development Officer.
I also wish to thank the College Principal, Mr Peter Chapman for his fine stewardship of the College and for his support of the Foundation and Mr Peter Fullagar who acted ably as Acting Principal during Peter Chapman’s absence on leave in term 3.
The Foundation… Building Terrace’s Future

An Investment in the Future of Terrace
St. Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace is now planning for the next exciting stage of its capital development project with the renovation of Waterford Place (previously the RACQ building) in Water Street. The following fundraising programs seeking philanthropic support are operated by the Foundation.
- Capital (pledge) Campaign
Parents are asked to contribute through a pledge commitment with regular voluntary tax deductible gifts to the building fund.
The recent purchase by the college of Waterford Place, affords Terrace flexibility in its planning to continue to provide our students with a high quality education.
- Annual Giving

Each year the Foundation approaches members of the wider Terrace Community - Old Boys, past parents and friends - asking them to consider a tax-deductible donation to the Building Fund. The appeal letter signed by the Principal, President of the Old Boys’ Association and a Christian Brother representing the Foundation board, explains the vision and future capital development plans to improve facilities at the College.
A bequest made in one’s Will is an opportunity to invest in the future of Terrace. It can be made in a variety of ways - property, a work of art, a fixed monetary sum, shares or bonds, insurance policy or a percentage of an estate. Testimonial gifts to the Charitable Fund can be preserved to provide named bursaries eg. In a loved one’s memory - in perpetuity.
The Foundation received a memorial gift from the Musgrave family in memory of Dr John Musgrave for the new Chapel of the Holy Family in 2001. As mentioned by Mr Flannery in his report, some of the substantial bequest made by the late James J D Mahoney were used to purchase a new vehicle for the Eddie’s Van Outreach mission which provides a big brekky to marginalised people in Brisbane. The van is manned by senior students, old boys and staff each week day mornings throughout the year. Its operation is funded by a Lenten Appeal run annually by students and other public donations.
Please contact Cameron Gibson, Development Officer at the Foundation Office (Ph 3214 5212) for more details on any of these choices as an investment in quality education for present and future generations of Terracians. All donations, no matter at what level, are valued greatly.
