Term 3 in Primary | Mr Brendan Ganley
Term 3 is such a fantastic term, as there are fewer interruptions, allowing for great flow with class work and time for students to engage through learning and discovery. Term 3 has also brought great opportunities for our Years 5 and 6 students to explore through incursions and excursions. We see this as an invaluable tool to broaden learning and allow students to engage and develop their understanding and interest in the world we live in.
In Year 5 this term, students have donated an incredible number of non-perishable items to our night version of the Eddie’s Van. This appeal connects closely with the work students are completing in Religion, where the focus has been on charities pondering questions such as:
What are charities? Why did they start? What can we do to help others in our community?
Thank you to the Year 5 families for their support with this appeal. The response was truly humbling, and with these donations, we will be able to assist members across our community to have a meal and hopefully break food insecurity, which many suffer each and every day.
Also this term in Years 5 and 6, students have had the chance to have an incredible presentation from the ‘Surfing Scientist’ Mr Ruben Meerman. Topics covered included the periodic table, chemical reactions and the importance of STEM worldwide.
Our Year 6 students listened to a moving presentation and reflection from our friends at Ethni. Presenters shared their stories and accounts of the push and pull factors that move them away from their homeland or bring them closer to another land in search of safety and a better future.
Our Year 5 students received a visit from our local councillor, Cr Vicki Howard. This was a great opportunity for students to hear about our College's area and learn about what is involved with local government. This visit is also well connected to the unit work in Year 5 HASS throughout Term 3.
In Week 8, Year 6 students participated in the annual Gerard Butler Shield out at Tennyson. This event is a memorial pool of touch football matches, which celebrates the life of Gerard Butler who passed away as a Year 7 student while at Terrace in 1994. Since Gerard’s passing, this competition has taken place to remember our Terrace brother. Like the first match in the 90s, the games last week were played with great spirit and energy – with a splash of class rivalry! Classes 6B and 6D were our finalists on the day, with Mr Murray and 6B taking home the title of winning class. We thank all the teachers and students who participated in this great event. We also recognise Jim and Cathy Butler, as well as all the extended Butler family for coming out once again to be a part of this special day.
Next Thursday 12 September, all parents, carers and families are welcome to attend the annual Years 5 and 6 Celebration of Science. This event will showcase the innovation and creativity of our Year 6 students exercised throughout their STEM unit looking ahead to 2050, and our Year 5 students discovering all that is connected to chemicals and what impacts their changes. Both year levels will be displaying their work in the Campbell Centre at the following times:
- Year 5 | 8.50am until 9.45am
- Year 6 | 9.55am until 10.50am
Have a great week and see you at the Celebration of Science next week.
