The Good News of Year 9

Recently the Year 9 Religious Education students assisted students at Marist Asia Foundation school in Ranong Thailand, with the learning of their English. Letters were exchanged via their Terrace teacher, Mrs Monica Keating and in Ranong through Ms Aleisha Keating, Monica’s daughter, who is a volunteer teacher at the school.

Ranong has a high population of Burmese migrant families who have left their native land in search of a better life. Marist Asia Foundation School was established 12 years ago, providing an education to Burmese migrant children and to young adults in Ranong, a fishing town in Southern Thailand. Their education programs include a four year secondary school program, where the students learn three languages. English is the third language of the students after Burmese and Thai languages!

So, the students at Terrace gladly wrote letters to students in Ranong and received a reply in return. Congratulations Year 9 gentleman on reaching out so well and helping those less fortunate than themselves.  Everyone can make a difference and every little bit counts!

More Good News

Reidy House exploring Youth Homelessness through their ‘Rough Night In” conducted their annual ‘Rough Night In’ last Saturday night at Waterford Place. The key outcome of the experience is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their perspective on homelessness, particularly youth homelessness. The ‘Rough Night In” compliments the relationship between Reidy House and Brisbane Youth Service, who are dedicated to supporting the displaced youth of Brisbane.

A great night was had by all and it was wonderful to see many parents join their sons for breakfast and the story sharing of our Year 11s and their experiences on our Eddie’s Van. The night also raised over $2000 for Brisbane Youth Service.  Many thanks to Mr Rob Johnson and Mr David Mandall for their time and commitment to such a wonderful and creative opportunity for our young men.
