Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, Tom Burns

Whilst another week has flown by for some, last Friday night saw the pinnacle of the term for our dedicated swimmers. The GPS Swimming Championship was a fantastic night which not only celebrated the success of the athletes in the pool, but also the spirit each school so abundantly has. Terrace was fortunate enough to bring both Years 10 and 12 out to the hallowed Sleeman Sports Complex, which proved to be a good mix as we quickly became the loudest school on the night. Between each song that was played over the loudspeaker and each war cry, the true dedication, commitment and desire of each swimmer was shown to all who watched. It was truly spectacular to see the talent each one of our swimmers possesses combine with the determination to win, to provide us spectators with a never ending battle in the pool. Whilst all of our swimmers competed valiantly and did their school proud, a special mention must go to Thomas Neill and Felix Wilson. Tom Neill, the Captain of Swimming, led by example as he took out all four of his events and broke a GPS record in the Open 200m Freestyle.  Felix competed in a multitude of events and won the 50m breaststroke. Our 6x50m Freestyle Open Relay team rounded out the night with an exciting win which saw Terrace grab fifth spot on the night. Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed and I hope you enjoy a well deserved break.

On another note, this week is Anti-Bullying Week where the school, both students and staff, collectively aim to address the issue of bullying within Terrace and raise awareness to what bullying can be misinterpreted as. One of the key messages from this week is the importance of support for one another, even for a person who may not be a close friend of yours. Support for one another is invaluable in fighting bullying as it shows the victim he is not alone. In what can be a dark time, knowing you are valued and appreciated by someone, even if they are a stranger, is priceless. This support is easily achieved by simply having a chat with the person you think may be struggling and asking them how they are. In keeping with our motto this year, we as a school must go All In together and support one another to counter bullying and help all fellow Terracians.
