Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

Welcome to the new term.  As part of our ongoing commitment to the formation of students, while involving parents in the process, we are facilitating several high-quality presentations. This week, we host Mr Paul Dillon from Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA), who will address students from Years 10 to 12. Paul presents research-based information and advice about adolescents, alcohol and other drugs, and will speak with the students on Friday.  There is excellent information available on the DARTA website if parents would like to view relevant resources. James Peterson from ‘Breaking Free’ will address our Year 11 students on the theme of ‘putting your mental health first’.

Recent reports in the media suggest that vaping is becoming a popular pastime for our teenagers. Most teenagers are unaware of the associated risks and potential impact vaping can have on their development and overall health. I encourage parents to discuss the dangers of vaping, nicotine and other substances in the discussion alongside alcohol and drugs. A link to a recent special report by SchoolTV into Vaping can be found here.

On Tuesday 27 April, we hold our annual Inter-House Cross Country carnival. On this day, all students are asked to wear their House sports uniform. It is an expectation that every student who is physically able to do so, completes the course for his House. Students will need to bring a water bottle and hat for the races. Sunscreen will also be available at the event.

A reminder that Term 2 is the start of students wearing the winter uniform. As previously communicated, this means all students must wear their blazer to and from the College every day. Long trousers are compulsory for students in Years 11 and 12. At assembly this week, I also made our uniform expectations for co-curricular events very clear. Students are permitted to wear their playing uniform or the co-curricular shirt throughout the day. No other variations of Terrace apparel are allowed. If students are staying to watch the 1st XI play, they need to change into the formal College uniform (white shirt and blazer with the red HPE cap). We are very grateful for the efforts families make to ensure the boys present themselves in a manner befitting the College.

As a community that relies heavily on relationships, I remind all our families about the significant adults who are here to assist should you have any concerns about your son’s journey. Your son/s House PC Mentor is the first point of contact for minor issues, while House Deans are available for more significant concerns. Please feel free to be in touch, even if it is just for feedback or advice. We have a dedicated pastoral team who are keen to assist in tracking and supporting students.

I look forward to a highly productive second term.
