Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Welcome to Week 5.

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

It would be fair to say that there is a reasonable amount of illness around at the moment with large numbers of staff and students absent. Make sure that students are looking after themselves. There are a number of assignments pending and exams not too far away, so it is very important that the boys are taking care of themselves through plenty of sleep, warm clothing, drinking water and good hygiene. The Department of Health advises that schools can help prevent the flu spreading by:

  • promoting flu vaccinations (any person aged six months and over can be vaccinated)
  • encouraging staff and students with flu-like symptoms to stay at home
  • sending home staff and children who arrive with flu-like symptoms
  • encouraging children, staff and visitors to cover coughs and sneezes and having tissues and rubbish bins readily available
  • ensuring children and staff wash their hands regularly

Last Friday evening I had the opportunity to attend the Year 12 Drama production. The students presented three Shakespearian plays – Hamlet, Othello and Macbeth. The performances were extraordinary and I congratulate the 16 students involved, the sound and lighting students from Year 11 and Mr Michael Beh. The quality of performance was the highest I have seen since arriving at Terrace. Well done to all involved.

Last week the College held an ATAR Information Night, whilst this week the Year 11 Subject Selection Evening was held on Monday followed by interviews later in the week. There will be a number of subject related information evenings over the coming weeks. All of these information evenings are designed to assist parents and students to navigate the curriculum landscape and I thank the large number of staff who are involved in coordinating and presenting at these evenings.

During last week the Courier Mail published some data relating to NAPLAN results. Whist I acknowledge that NAPLAN is only one measure of student performance, it does provide some comparison of school results across Queensland. It was pleasing to see that Terrace was placed in the top 10 Queensland schools for Year 7 and Year 9 and one of only two boys’ schools on the list. These results again reflect the hard work of our students and their teachers and the strong partnership with parents. Well done.

The co-curricular program continues with sound results being recorded in Debating, Chess, Basketball and Rugby. We continue to have large numbers of boys involved in these programs and the strong results reflect the quality of the programs. This week we have home games for Chess, Basketball and Rugby. I encourage the community to come along to the various venues to support our teams. My thanks to the many families who travelled to Toowoomba last weekend for games. Team numbers were strong and this was reflected very well through the commitment of the Terrace community. Thank you.

Finally, this week, preparation for the Mt Sion building project is progressing and I hope that construction will commence by the start of Term 4. This will necessitate some changes with regard to access to the College, drop-off and pick-up, playground areas for the students and the presence of trucks in and around the College. I will keep the College community informed as the date for the start of construction is finalised.

Have a great week and stay healthy.

God Bless,

Dr Michael Carroll

College Principal

College Dean | Mr Chris Ryan

Congratulations to Mr Will Marshall on his appointment to Head of the Languages Faculty for January 2018. Mr Marshall has brought a calm and consultative style and has been acting capably in the role this year. We wish him every success moving forward in this vital literacy leadership role.

Congratulations to Mrs Mary Cassidy on her appointment to the position of Japanese Coordinator for January 2018. Mrs Cassidy has also been acting in this role and the boys who learn Japanese from Years 5 to 12 and the teaching team are grateful for her energy, enthusiasm and commitment to this role.

Congratulations to Mr Tim Stephens on his appointment to the position of eLearning Coordinator for January 2018. Whilst acting in this position, Mr Stephens has brought collaboration, initiative and focus to this role and we wish well for this new challenge.

Next week, we warmly welcome Mrs Mary Meadows back to the College from long service leave. Sincere thanks to Mrs Susie Cooper who has taken Mrs Meadows’s classes on two occasions this year. We are blessed to have such able colleagues in our extended community.

Mrs Melissa Deacon has been on leave this term and this has been extended for another three weeks. We look forward to her return later in the term.

I have been in contact with parents whose sons are taught by Mr Geoff Ludlow. Unfortunately, Mr Ludlow has been unwell and has taken leave for the remainder of the term, we wish him well and our prayers of support are with him as he manages his back injury.

Dean of Studies | Mrs Julie Quinn

Subject selection evenings are coming up for Year 8 students going into Year 9.

Naplan 2017

Naplan results from across the nation have now been released.

The table below shows the percentage of students at Terrace above the National benchmark for each of the areas in the Naplan tests. We congratulate our staff and students on these outcomes.

Individual student reports will be posted home upon delivery to Terrace.

QCS Practice Days

Next week our Year 12 students will attempt QCS practice tests across the two days on August 14 and 15. The Seniors have worked hard across the year to maximise their results on all four papers. This will be our final practice prior to the formal QCS tests on August 29 and 30.

QTAC Evening

A reminder that next Thursday evening is the QTAC information evening for Year 12 students and parents. This will commence at 6pm in the GT125 theatre. The presentation will be delivered by Mr Paul Ianniello, our Career counsellor.

Year 8 into Year 9 Subject Selection Evening

On Thursday August 24 the information evening for all Year 8 students and parents to select subjects for next year will take place. The evening will commence at 6pm in the Campbell Centre. All Year 8 students will receive a booklet outlining the content and assessment for each of the option subjects offered at Terrace. The evening will commence with general information about subjects followed by specific subject presentations and followed by an opportunity to speak with individual subject coordinators and Heads of Faculty.

Year 11 into Year 12 – English Extension and Music Extension

Year 11 students have been informed of the extensions subjects in English and Music that are offered at Terrace in Year 12. The information evenings for these subjects are- English Extension- Tuesday August 22 in the GT125 theatre commencing at 6pm; Music Extension – Wednesday August 23, commencing at 6pm in the Music room.

Busy Time

With Week 5 almost completed, many students will have assignments that are nearing completion and submission. Every student should ensure that he has checked his work prior to submission so that he is confident that he has produced his best work. Good planning leading up to due dates will always allow for checking and refining. Poor planning will result in handing in work that can compromise a student’s best outcome. I strongly encourage all of our students to make sure that their planning always allows for a checking and refining time prior to submission.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

At Terrace, we aim to develop leaders who live from the heart.

When discussing student leadership in the school context many of our EREA schools focus on the theory of servant leadership.

The servant-leader as servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.

Robert Greenleaf, founder of the Centre for Servant Leadership.

At Terrace, we aim to develop leaders who live from the heart and want to build a community who encourage and inspire others with their values-driven leadership.

This model of leadership sits in harmony with the narrative of the Christian Brothers and our founder, Blessed Edmund Rice. Over the next month our Year 11 cohort will unpack the concept of servant leadership within the Terrace context. This process will culminate in the Year 11 Leadership Camp and selection of the College Leaders for 2018. As a College community, we value this as a learning journey that commences with our Year 5 students and is fostered over time particularly through the house system, retreat and formation programs.

This weekend we have our second round of “home” matches against The Southport School in Chess, Rugby and Basketball. Just a reminder that if students are staying behind to watch the First’s match then they are required to be dressed in the formal white shirt and blazer. If they wish to wear a hat then it needs to be the plain red cap used for HPE.

Please continue to talk to your son about using the lights when transiting to and from school, especially if he is walking to Terrace from the train station in the Valley. We receive numerous reports from motorists and business owners who are concerned about the unsafe road crossing practices of a number of our students.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

“Never see a need without doing something about it.”

We can attribute these wise and pragmatic words to Mary MacKillop (St Mary of The Cross), founder of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and whose feast day we celebrated on Tuesday. Mary MacKillop truly understood the needs of our society 150 years ago. The legacy of her response to these needs is the Sisters of St Joseph, who today are a robust group of women working in Australia, New Zealand, East Timor, Ireland, Peru and Brazil, following in Mary’s footsteps doing a wide variety of works, revealing to all the hospitable heart of God. Most significantly, St Mary of The Cross animates “the Way” of the cross”.

Fr Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest and a globally recognized ecumenical teacher, articulates “the Way” of the cross perfectly - Jesus is a person and, at the same time, a process. Jesus is the Son of God, but he is also “the Way”—the way of the cross. He’s the goal and the means. Mary MacKillop lived this. How can we live “the Way”?

“The Way” of the cross may evoke within us a need to be on a journey of ascension to divinity. Some, including Fr Richard Rohr, would argue the complete opposite. To become more Christ like we may need to descend towards an emptying of one’s self, towards total acceptance of not being in control and towards an ever-humbler approach to life. Fr Richard Rohr further explores “the Way” in the statement below:

If our life in Christ means anything to you, if love can persuade at all, or the Spirit that we have in common, or any tenderness and sympathy, then be united in your convictions and united in your love, with a common purpose and a common mind. . . . In your minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus.

As Australians, we are masters of the understatement while also being very proud people. As we ponder how we might follow “the Way” of the cross, let’s not underestimate our first and only saint and be proud of the legacy of Mary Mackillop and the role that she and her followers have played, and continue to play in doing something when a need is seen. Another expression of “the Way”.

Students should not lose focus on their academics.

With subject selection and Immersion taking a lot of attention, it is important that students do not lose sight of the main focus of the term – their academics. Assignments will be completed and handed in this week, Exam timetables have been published, and student focus should now be on preparation for exam block commencing 18 August. I have reminded students of the wonderful staff here at Waterford who offer tutoring before, during and after school. Also, at 7.45am each Friday, we run Friday rollcall where the week’s work is revisited and revised.

The Year 10 subject selection process comes to a close this week following the subject selection evening on Monday night. Thank you to those parents and students who attended, hopefully you were able to hear information that has assisted with your final selection of subjects. Over the course of this week your son will meet with a Head of Faculty to finalise subject selections.

The Immersion program is increasingly on the radar for both staff and students. Several parent information evenings have been held over the last two weeks, specifically for the units that are taking place outside of Brisbane. Further information regarding the Brisbane based units will be forthcoming and these groups are also meeting with their Immersion leaders here at Waterford.

Years 7, 8 and 9 Program Leader | Mr Damien Coman

Is your checklist booklet being used effectively at this mid-point of the term?

The College celebrated Book Week with the library implementing a number of initiatives including the ‘Get Caught Reading’ campaign. I should note the staff photo winner was Mr Damien Fall reading besides a statue of Hans Christian Anderson whilst on Long Service Leave in the United States! Famous author Mr James Moloney attended a breakfast and the Year 7 then Year 8 cohorts then had a session each with James who shared his insights about writing styles, behind the scenes in his life as an author and where he drew some of his inspiration for writing from. The students asked some wonderful questions as their curiosity grew.

On Monday and Tuesday a significant number of Years 7,8 and 9 students were involved in the Future Problem Solving Finals (FPS). Congratulations to all of the hard working and talented young men and their coaches on their magnificent achievements in this area.

The Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN results were both strong and pleasing for Terrace. The way that our students approached these national benchmark tests was certainly a credit to them. They have maintained the College’s proud tradition of taking great pride in our academic results.

Week 5, leading into Week 6 is always a critical time of the term. The juggling metaphor can be a good one to highlight the challenges at present. Whilst homework is ongoing, assignments are well and truly in progress but exams that are approaching fast can’t be ignored either. We have to also juggle family commitments, friends and extra-curricular activities as well. Like anything in life, it is about using time effectively and chipping away at these elements each day (rather than letting them build into something that is too big to take on in too short a space of time). A question for our students: Is your checklist booklet being used effectively at this mid-point of the term?

Please check the Terrace App and Parent Lounge regularly.

All our ensembles will be focusing on preparations for the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) which will take place at Villanova College from Thursday 17 August through Sunday 20 August. This is our “grand final” event for music and, as such, it is expected that these performances take priority. A complete schedule for the event is currently on the Terrace App and, as is usual for all events, more detailed information has been sent out via Parent Lounge. Please respond to these notifications to confirm your son’s attendance at the various performances. It is always a busy but rewarding weekend for our musicians, providing them with a great performance experience as well as the opportunity to listen to other ensembles and receive some constructive feedback from experienced adjudicators. Please ensure that your son has a Terrace Music folder (available from the Terrace Shop) and the correct uniform (as outlined on the Event Memo) before the festival. The following links contain helpful information to assist you in navigating QCMF. Click here to view the Festival Map and parking information. Click here to view the Key Information Sheet for Festival Guests.

Thank you to all who attended the Strings Showcase Concert last night. The boys are to be congratulated on their performance and thank you to Mrs Kelly and the string teachers for their efforts in preparing the evening.

Congratulations to the 1st Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Mr Matt Cocking, for their performance on College Assembly this week. Next week, the Music Spirit Assembly will take place on Thursday 17 August, just prior to QCMF and will involve performances from our premier ensembles. Since this performance is taking place directly after the RNA Show Day holiday, please ensure your sons have their instrument and music at school in preparation for this performance.

Applications for the 2018 Young Conservatorium programs have now opened. All applications must be submitted online through our website, to apply now please click here ($30 for a single applicant /$60 for a family application). The closing date for the main 2018 intake is Saturday 9 September 2017, with applicable auditions being held between 3 - 21 October 2017.

Talkin’ Jazz will be holding a performance workshop, for interested students, at the Brisbane Jazz Club during the September school holidays. This is always an exciting opportunity for those who have a strog grasp of their instrument and are interested in learning more about jazz. More information can be found by clicking here.

Please check the Terrace App and Parent Lounge regularly as this is where information regarding various events (see the list below) will now be published. As events are approved and posted to the Parent Lounge, you will be sent an email advising the name of the event, including the Event Memo, to check and you will be required to give a response regarding attendance. Event Memos will also be available through the Terrace App in Culture |Music.

Director of Sport | Mr Damian Wright

This weekend we approach the half way point of the Term 3 activities in Rugby and Basketball.

For both the Rugby and Basketball programs, there have been some challenges and some outstanding success. Regardless of the results, it is important that the boys are playing, enjoying their time with their peers, and improving their skill sets for the specific demands of their selected sport. The College takes great pride and is fully supportive of every young man who wants to compete, be it in the A or B team or the F or G team.

I will admit that it is a challenge to get fixtures every week but if the boys want to play, then we will strive to organise games. Thank you to the mums and dads and the coaches who travel far and wide to facilitate these opportunities. In the last weeks in Rugby we have had more fixtures in the supplementary draw than our scheduled opponent. On Saturday, we played BBC, BGS, TGS, NC and ACGS in our Supplementary fixtures.

The standard of play in both programs has been very good, with the boys committing to training and game day execution. A comment from a coach on the weekend: The best part about our performance was that the boys did exactly what we practiced at training. They listened and they learnt.

Sportsmanship is the priority in all areas. The boys are regularly told that all performances, contests and events are to always be in the “best of Sportsmanship.” It is pleasing to note that the number of Red Cards is significantly down this year and general behavior on the field is better – Calm minds + Better decision making. It was also good to see Terrace teams tunnel opposition schools at a variety of supplementary games after they had finished their games. Small gestures of sportsmanship go a long way and are noticed – well done.

On Saturday, a small number of boys took the opportunity to compete at the UQ Sport Spring Series – Meet Three, across several Track and Field events. Under the club structure of Mayne Harriers – the Terrace boys competed in their Red and Black, to record some pre-season data and open their eyes to a club meet.

The more you expose yourself to compete under the pressure of competition, the better you become. Limiting yourself to two or three GPS Lead-Up Meets in Term 4 will not give you the best chance for a successful execution of skills at the GPS Championships. If you currently have time and balance with other things in your life – take up the opportunity to have a go.

The Terrace Gymnastics team competed at the Brisbane North Junior Regional competition last Sunday. The team had outstanding results all round with the Level 3 team placing Third overall on vault. In the individual scores for the boys Jacob Reed placed third and William Pickering placed seventh on vault.

The Level 5 team placed fourth for the All-Round score and fourth on each apparatus. The individual scores saw Darcy Little in eigth on Parallel Bars. A big congratulations to all the boys who competed and a big thank you to Albany Creek Gymnastics for host such an amazing competition.

Saturday is a home round (sigh of relief) with Terrace hosting TSS. That means all Rugby and Basketball games will be played at home – apart from Year 5, 6 and 7 in Basketball who operate on a split venue structure. The support for the Rugby at Tennyson over recent weeks has been first class, however it would be great to see more of the Basketballers remain on site and support the First V in a tough fixture this weekend. For the record the First XV currently are three wins to one loss, with the Basketball First V at two wins, two losses.

In the land of Football (Soccer), the ISSA Cup (U14) team made up of Year 7, 8 and 9 students have progressed through the Round Robin structure and are now at the final eight stage – Quarter Finals – knockout of their competition. They travel to West Moreton Anglican College this week for their fixture, and if they progress the Semi-Finals and Grand Final, will be held at Annerley Football Club.

For the UHL Sport Cup team (Open All Age), they are in the same position and will host St Mary’s of Toowoomba next week. Good Luck to both teams!

The Weekly Wrap

Your Round 4 Wrap.

Rugby Wrap

As we head towards the half way mark of the season I would like to congratulate all teams and coaches for their commitment to date. Last weekend was a test of our playing depth and width with teams playing far and wide. A special thanks to our age group coordinators Mr Blair Copelin and Mr Brendan McGrath who managed to juggle teams lists to ensure we had enough boys to fulfil our commitments to the supplementary draw.

It's pleasing to see the continual improvement of all teams as the season progresses. The willingness to shift the ball to space and use the width of the field was evident with plenty of entertaining tries from all parts of the fields.

Once again I must thank our referees for their efforts each weekend. Special thanks goes to our student referees Charlie Marshall,Dominic Coonan, Billy Boulton, James Nottingham, Cooper Ree and Darcy Whittaker who are always willing to referee games each weekend. Refereeing is a great way for parents to be involved so if you are a dad or mum with referring experience and want to be involved please contact me in the Sport Office.

Congratulations to the following boys who represented Met Nth and the Chairman’s teams at the recent Under 12 State Carnivals Xavier Grambower and Harry McKim.

A weekly Terrace Team Man is selected by the coaching staff during the GPS season. This is in recognition of any player who makes an outstanding contribution to their team both at training and in a game.

An important reminder that Training is not optional, if your son is unable to make training he is required to let his age group coordinator know.

I wish every team all the very best for their games this weekend against TSS.

Captain’s Corner | Vice Captain, Matt Lo Grande

It is important to stay focussed on and off the field.

As Term 3 gets busier with assignments, exam revision, and co-curricular activities, it is important that all Terracians stay focused on the tasks at hand. It’s very easy for all of us to go home and procrastinate until bed and then come to school in the morning without achieving any successful study or assignment work. For the mean time we might not be realising the consequences of procrastination. However, when exams sneak up on us, time studying rather than procrastinating will prove pivotal in our Term 3 results.

It’s also very important to find a balance between studies, co-curricular activities and sleep. Sleeping well now will ultimately provide us with full capability to maintain concentration in class each day at school allowing us as to learn as much as possible. Sleeping in class, and zoning out due to tiredness isn’t good enough during crucial periods of the term. Furthermore, sleeping well will ensure everyone stays healthy and isn’t missing school. Class time is critical as it is the most important time to learn and remember knowledge. Therefore missing classes will put you on the back foot and catching up will be required.

Saturday, the 1st XV are playing against The Southport School at 2.15pm at Tennyson. One team’s season will be over and the other will continue their journey to the premiership. It’s the biggest game of the season and the Red and Black army might just prove the difference and get the boys over the line. Saturday is also a great opportunity to have a break from the books and restore your energy required for the remainder of the weekend. Good luck to all the Basketball, Chess and Rugby players on the weekend!
