Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Today the College acknowledged Remembrance Day and the impact it has had on so many people over the years. The students gathered in Houses to participate in our Remembrance Day Liturgies. I do not doubt that many such gatherings were held across the world. As a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition, gathering in liturgy is important for our students and the entire College community. My thanks to the staff and students who assisted with the liturgies.

This Saturday, the College will host the GT on the Green Long Lunch. After several false starts in both 2020 and 2021, it will be fabulous to come together as a Terrace Family, have fun and importantly, raise funds for the College and our charity partners. This year the organisations receiving our support will be the Para START Program and all House Friendship Groups supported by our nine Houses. Funds will also be directed to various Support Groups across the College. Preparation for GT on the Green has taken an enormous amount of organisation. On behalf of the Terrace Family, I would like to thank the organising committee, the staff and the many volunteers who will contribute to the success of the day. It is wonderful to enjoy time together as a community and provide valuable support to our charity partners at the same time. I look forward to seeing you at Tennyson on Saturday.

Over the last few weeks, the selection of our 2022 College and House Leaders has been occurring. Announcements to the students have already been made, and it is my pleasure to introduce the 2022 Student Leaders to the College community. They are a fine group of young men and will lead the College with distinction. Congratulations Gentlemen.

Finally this week, needless to say, exams are a matter of days away for all students. It remains essential that study and exam preparations are well underway. Students in many year levels have ‘Checklist’ booklets that provide an outstanding revision resource, and I reiterate that there is no substitute for consistent and focused revision. The coming days are very important for all students, and your support and encouragement are vital.

Have a great week.

God Bless.

Dean of Identity | Mr Terry Thompson

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of World War One. Over the past century, this moment has been adopted across the globe as a time to remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts.

Today, students participated in a House Remembrance Day liturgy. It was a reverent time to remember those who gave their lives in the fight for equality and justice and to honour the sacrifice of more than 102 000 Australians who have died for our nation in wartime.

We remembered those who suffered to keep our nation secure in World War One and the Australian men and women who have served in other conflicts and peacekeeping missions. May this day be a time when we remember their courageous actions and give thanks to those who now rest with their God.

Last Thursday, I accompanied the 2022 College Captains to the Annual Service of Prayer for Reconciliation at the Cathedral of St Stephen. The service was led by the Very Reverend Anthony Mellor (Dean of the Cathedral of St Stephen) and the Very Reverend Dr Peter Catt (Dean of St John’s Anglican Cathedral, Brisbane).

Each year people from the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane, the Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba and the Anglican Church of Southern Queensland (the Diocese of Brisbane) gather to pray with and for one another for a greater mutual understanding and reconciliation. In 2002, the leadership of the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches in Australia welcomed and approved the decision to set aside the 4 November as a day of prayer for reconciliation and greater understanding between the two communities.

Bonded together by a common faith in Christ and by Baptism, the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches recognise and appreciate the signs of developing unity. Like all relationships, they need constant care to grow and deepen. It was lovely seeing students from All Hallows' and St James, who are also in the St Stephen parish.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

The adolescent brain

There is ample research and literature regarding the adolescent male brain and how it functions or even malfunctions at times. In very simple terms, the influx of testosterone that accompanies the journey from boy to man has a significant and often detrimental effect on the functioning of the frontal lobe. In short, for several years in the life of a young man, the frontal lobe often doesn’t work as well as it should. Since this part of the brain is linked with critical roles, including impulse control, planning, attentiveness, risk aversion, memory, and social and sexual behaviour, it follows that teenagers (and even men well past their teens) have human biology working against them. This does not excuse inappropriate actions or behaviours, but it does help to explain why boys will sometimes let us down when it comes to making decisions. My generation, and that of most Terrace parents and caregivers, did not face the temptations and challenges of the online world that our children face as they travel through adolescence. The reality is we may never quite fully understand how this shapes the minds of our children. However, building good habits online requires both home and school to regularly remind students about their responsibilities and the potential impact poor decisions can have on their lives. As always, I encourage you to talk with your children about the various chat groups they are in and what’s the worst of what they see. Many conversations about what others are doing can be a subtle way of shaping your son’s decision making without it becoming an attack on them.

Now would be a good time to revisit a topic by SchoolTV exploring the important issue of alcohol consumption with your son. With many students now turning 18 while at school, underage drinking is on the rise with younger years as it becomes normalised to a degree with Senior students. The safest level of alcohol consumption for teenagers is no alcohol at all, but this may be difficult to enforce and will not prevent them from experimenting. However, parents and caregivers can influence sensible drinking habits and help minimise the risks. In the SchoolTV Special Report, a series of discussion points are offered to help make the conversation about alcohol consumption a little easier. The report can be found here.

Further to my comments last week, it is very easy for our young men to be thinking about the future at this stage of the term. In only a few short weeks, they will be on holiday and away from the routines and boundaries of the academic year. Despite the temptation to be thinking ahead, our students must live in the present and focus squarely on their responsibilities – finishing the year well, finalising assignments and carefully preparing for exams. Our message to students is very clear: it is business as usual for the remainder of the year, and it is important to finish the year as well as possible. It is also tempting to let the hair and uniform slip as we get close to the end. However, our standards do not change, and we expect students to keep the bar high.

I look forward to watching our students give their best until the end of the school year.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

During the current external exam block, I meet with each subject cohort of Senior students 20 minutes prior to the commencement of their exam. There are several reasons why I do this. Firstly, to gather them all in one space to ensure they are on time for the start of the exam. Secondly, to provide updates on what has been occurring and what may be coming up in the near future academically, as many will only come into school for their exams. However, most importantly, it is an opportunity to focus students on the exam ahead.

The exams have challenged our Seniors. Consequently, I have been using the concept of controllables and uncontrollables as advice for students navigating not only the pressures of exams but also this period of uncertainty. The message is to recognise the stressors that you cannot control – ATAR scores, life after school, university, work – and accept that you cannot influence these outcomes at present. However, you can control aspects of your life at this present time that will ensure you maximise your academic performance – exam preparation, staying healthy, getting enough sleep.

At assessment time, it is important that students feel they are in control of aspects of their lives and can influence future outcomes. Academically, this requires that students direct their energy and time into the things they can control, not on things that they cannot.

Ultimately, the key to good performance is preparation – It is still not too late to be prepared. Therefore, when your son is feeling the pressure of exams, here are some hints that can be shared with them:

  • Be prepared. Work backwards from your exam date to plan when you will prepare. Don’t just leave it for the night before.
  • Complete all of the revision sheets.
  • Use the moodle and the subject checklist to go back through the content you have covered.
  • Test yourself:
    • use flashcards
    • do as many practice questions as possible
  • Mind dump – close your notes and recall everything you can in your own words
  • Continue to exercise and eat well. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Have a good sleep the night before, be well rested.
  • Go back over your study notes before the exam. Don’t engage in speculative talk.
  • It’s OK to be nervous. In fact, it is normal. Your mates may not show it, but they are just as nervous as you. Feeling like this is your body’s way of getting ready.
  • Walk into the exam with confidence – you have done the work, now is the time to show it!

I wish all students the best for their exams next week.

Dean of Waterford | Mr Luke Gribble

In the words of American author Harvey Mackay, A great accomplishment shouldn't be the end of the road, just the starting point for the next leap forward. The upcoming exams are the final chance for our Year 10 boys to test that they are well prepared for the rigours and busyness of Senior schooling. It is imperative that our Year 10 students finish the Waterford year well and maintain their focus as they embark on their final round of exams commencing on Thursday 18 November.

On the fun side, last Thursday saw our semi-finalists playoff in our Waterford Place Basketball tournament. Earlier in the year, our Pastoral Care Groups went head-to-head, displaying an exciting array of skills as they battled for the prime position of best PC Basketballers for 2021. We are now down to the final two PC groups who will play in the grand final next Thursday.

As we head toward our end of term, we are fortunate that we can look forward to the Christmas break with family and friends. However, startlingly 2.2 million Australians will not be able to enjoy the same simplicities as they struggle to put food on the table or find a place to call home. This year, Waterford Place, as a part of the Terrace Family, is again supporting the Terrace Christmas Appeal by collecting items in our Pastoral Care Groups to make individual hampers to share with members of our local community who are doing it tough. We ask that your son brings in items to help create the hampers, which we will donate to our Eddie’s Van at the end of term. A list of non-perishable items will be provided to your son’s PC Group next week.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Support Group News

It takes a village to raise a child is an African proverb that means that an entire community of people must provide for and interact positively with children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment.

In the case of Terrace Culture, the Support Groups are our village that helps us throughout the year. Over the past two months, both the Debating Support Group and the Terrace Performing Arts have held their AGMs to thank outgoing members and elect new people to the roles.

We would like to thank and acknowledge the following people for their service:

  • Ms Inma Beaumont – outgoing Treasurer TPA

The following parents will now be a part of these teams:

  • Mr Martin Harris – TPA Treasurer
  • Ms Fiona Lane – TPA Secretary

Welcome!

Chamber Music Concert

Last night a range of aspiring musicians took to the stage to provide a delightful evening of musical entertainment. The Terrace community provided wonderful support for an evening of soloists, quartets, and larger ensembles. It was so encouraging to see boys from Year 5 to Year 11 performing side by side. Thank you to our staff, who continue to work tirelessly to support the boys' music education. Congratulations to all boys who performed. The evening was a beautiful way to celebrate their excellence and highlighted a key element that makes Terrace Music special.
