Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Last week I had the opportunity to spend some time in Sydney as part of an EREA School Renewal Team. We were visiting two remarkable schools – St Edmund’s College and St Gabriel’s School. Both schools are catering for special needs students and were wonderful examples of Edmund Rice schools. The students at both schools were so very welcoming and proud of their school. I have said on many occasions that Terrace is a tremendous place, however, when put into the context that we are part of a bigger entity, then who we are is even more important.

Also during last week, Mr Chris Ryan participated in his Formative Appraisal. I thank the staff, parents and students who were involved in this process. Although it was not surprising, I do wish to congratulate Chris on an outstanding appraisal. Chris is a very dedicated, professional and caring member of the Terrace Family, and on behalf of everyone, I congratulate him on a very successful appraisal. Well done Chris.

I am sure that people appreciated the Brisbane public holiday on Wednesday as a chance to have a break. The Year 12 students have been working very hard this week with their QCS practice program on Monday and Tuesday. This was followed by their Formal on Tuesday evening. It was an excellent evening and I congratulate our young men on the way in which they conducted themselves.

This week also sees many of the Terrace bands, ensembles and choirs participating in the Queensland Catholic Music Festival. This year nearly 500 Terrace students will be involved in a range of performances. On behalf of the Terrace Family, I wish all performers the very best in what is really their ‘Grand Final’ performance. Good luck to all involved.

Term 3 has passed the half-way mark and it will not be long before exams commence. There are many students currently working hard on their assignments. This stage of the school term is traditionally the time when the ‘hard yards’ need to be done with assignments and study. A couple of intensive weeks will be excellent preparation for the upcoming exams and I encourage all students to continue to work hard and be focussed over the next few weeks.

I hope that people are starting to recover from what has been a couple of demanding weeks health-wise. There have been many people unwell and battling the flu. The information published in last week’s Terrace News regarding care and hygiene are still relevant. Look after yourself and keep healthy.

College Principal

Congratulations to the 2017 Seniors on the occasion of their Senior Formal. This is always an important signpost in a busy and meaningful year in their lives.

I have spent this week in Geelong at the annual EREA national conference for Deputy Principals. I have used this opportunity to liaise with colleagues from New South Wales and Victoria in particular about a range of issues associated with the move to the new Senior Schooling model in 2019. It is always valuable time to spend with colleagues and to have this focussed opportunity is particularly helpful as we consider matters beyond subject selections such as student leadership, co-curricular programs and rites of passage. As a school with many good practices and traditions in areas such as these, it is helpful to consider them carefully so we retain the best of our present methods and integrate with the new model. It is helpful to discuss these matters with colleagues who understand our context as a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition.

Last week, EREA facilitated my formative appraisal as College Dean. This process included interviews with approximately 30 members of our extended community including senior staff, members of the College and Foundation Boards, teachers, non-teachers, students, parents and students. I thank all participants most sincerely for their insight in supporting my development in the role of College Dean. I enjoy my responsibilities very much and it is a privilege to work across so many dimensions of the Terrace Family. While I haven't received the formal report as of yet, the initial feedback from the appraisal was affirming and I look forward to the next three and a half years prior to the summative process in 2020.

Staff News

Like so many schools across Brisbane, we have had many staff and students sick with various bugs including influenza A. Please take heed of the Department of Health’s advice that Dr Carroll summarised in last week’s Terrace News.

Last week, I neglected to mention that Mr George Hornsby had finished his contract with us in the library. Mr Hornsby has done a great job and we wish him well. Mrs Cathy McDonald returned to her role this week and we welcome her back after some leave.

Next week, Mr Damien Fall will return to the College after long service leave. Mr Damien Cuddihy and Mr Mason Hellyer will continue in their respective roles as Acting Dean of Students and Acting Dean of Waterford until the end of Week 2 in Term 4. Mr Fall will be working with Dr Carroll and I upon his return as Dr Carroll takes leave in Weeks 9 and 10 of this term and Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4 and we wished to ensure continuity for this time.

QTAC Information Evening

This evening there is an information session for Year 12 parents and students around the process of applying to QTAC for tertiary entrance. The presentation commences at 6pm in the GT125 theatre and will be facilitated by Mr Ianniello, the Career’s counsellor.

Selection Evenings

Next week is a focus week for our selection evenings for the possible subjects of Music Extension and English Extension for Year 12 next year and for our current Year 8 students moving into Year 9 next year. The evenings are designed to offer information around possible choices of these subjects.

The English Extension information presentation, for current Year 11 students, is Tuesday August 22 at 6pm in the GT125 theatre, the Music Extension presentation, for current Year 11 students, is Wednesday August 24 in the Music centre. The Year 8 subject selection presentation commences at 6pm in the Campbell Centre.

Exam timetables

Exam timetables will be issued to boys towards the end of this week. These schedules are significant documents in setting up effective revision plans.

Year 10

Next week is the start of exams for our Year 10 students. I am most encouraged by the commitment that our Year 10 students have made to date. They have used the resources at Waterford well and it is most encouraging to witness their Friday roll call sessions where they review their week’s work within a group. The cohort made a significant improvement across Terms 1 and 2 and I encourage the boys to continue with their commitment to produce their very best results for this term. With the current process of selecting Senior subjects, obtaining a strong foundation in current subjects is critical in success in further years.

“Happy” students

I often meet with students and their parents to discuss academic outcomes and to seek further strategies to maximise students’ individual performances. One of the questions that I pose to students is to rate themselves on a fictitious “happy meter” scaled one to ten and then on a fictitious “motivational meter” from a scale one to ten. I request that they do this exercise across the years that they have been at Terrace. Without doubt, the two scales align and when the two meters align with a strong score, the tracker indicates a rise in academic performance. The underlying message is that the “happiest”/ most content students at Terrace are those boys who are keeping up with their work and who feel in control of their learning and assessment demands. The happiest boys are the boys who feel that they have given their best effort and received their best results – this is not necessarily a grade of an A but rather a score that they feel proud to receive. With the term being over the halfway mark and with many assignments due and exams occurring within the next three weeks, I do encourage all our boys to make that commitment to their studies. Our common strategies are Friday roll call, logging our hours and using the checklist to ensure that our revision is both methodical and relevant.

I have encouraged many boys to download the requirements for each subject from the checklist on moodle and place this in a folder for each subject. Add to the folder a separate exercise book for each subject and methodically do your revision into this exercise book. It is a very exact way of being accountable to your revision and keeping track of the knowledge required for each of the subjects.

On Tuesday night, the College hosted the Year 12 Formal at the Brisbane Convention Centre. It was a pleasure to share the evening with this group of young men and their partners. One of the many rewarding moments in the teaching profession is watching the boys grow into young men over the years. Tuesday night was certainly one of those milestone moments. They almost looked ready to graduate. The Senior Class thanked Mrs Jo Tarlington on the evening but I would also like to thank and acknowledge her tireless efforts in running the event. It was a fantastic evening.

It will come as no surprise that there is continuing concern regarding the use of social media within the education system in Australia. This centres both on appropriate use and the addictive impact that social media use has for some. Many in our world seem digitally distracted a lot of the time. Following is a piece, ‘Three signs your social media addiction is as bad as a drug problem.’ Read more here. Social media use is something that families and schools need to work on in partnership. We make many efforts at school to inform and educate students in appropriate and positive use of social media. There are many opportunities for this that we are happy to have embraced. There are, of course, instances where the use of social media, instant gratification sought, denial of reflection pre-posting and access to myriad apps that require monitoring outside of school hours. Savvy use of social media and how to hide posts is something at which many young people are experts. Anything that needs to be hidden (other than a celebratory surprise) is likely to have some form of harm attached.

With the “bye” round approaching for our co-curricular activities I hope many of our families have the opportunity to enjoy a quieter weekend.

“A Truer Image”

This week we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary through our Tuesday Morning Mass, kindly hosted by our Year 7 Magee and Treacy students. Not only was this occasion a special time for our Church and Terrace Family, it was also an important time for us to consider the life of Mary and the extraordinary role she played in the formation of our Church.

Fr Gerard’s homily with regards to Mary being the first disciple, embarking on the first missionary journey of our Church, was a key message for our gathering. Today I’d like to share with you another key message regarding Mary. The following is a reflection from Elizabeth Jonhson, CSJ on the reconceptualisation of Mary. I was drawn to the reflection’s challenge to recognise both the joys and struggles that Mary would have faced.

Miriam of Nazareth is a young Jewish woman from a farming village in Roman-occupied Galilee. This means that economically, she knows what it means to be poor. Roman land practices and taxation policies exploited village people, tipping more and more of them into destitution. Politically, her society is turbulent, wracked by violence from an unjust Jewish king (Herod) and an oppressive foreign army. Socially, this young woman inhabits a low rung on the ladder of class, probably uneducated as is the case with peasant women of her time and place. ... and even today. In a word, at the time of this canticle Mary is simply a nobody on the world stage. We owe a debt to women theologians of the two-thirds world who have noticed the similarities between Mary’s life and the multitudes of so many poor women today, who struggle to live a dignified human life against vast odds whether in rural or urban settings. Both dwell in poverty due to structural injustices; both inhabit worlds organized around the idea of masculine superiority and the inhibition of women’s gifts; indigenous women suffer added indignities due to their racial heritage and culture. Awareness in these women grows: Mary is one of us, they say, and we learn from them. It does Mary no honor to rip her out of her historical circumstances and transform her into an icon of peaceful, middle-class life robed in royal blue.

My soul proclaims your greatness, O my God, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. For your regard has blessed me, poor, and a serving woman. From this day all generations will call me blessed, for you, who are mighty, have done great things for me; and holy is your Name. (Luke 1: 46 – 48)

Term 3 is one of the best school terms as so much consistent work can be completed with fewer days interrupted by external events. Students have been working extremely hard at the assignment stage of the term and with exam preparation ready to take centre stage. Exam calendars will be out shortly and preparation now will take away the stress of study in the days leading up to each exam. The key question that each student should ask himself about his study plan after five weeks is, do the goals for what I want to achieve match the time and effort I am currently putting in?

There has been an incredible response for the Food Bank collection during the first week from our Years 5 and 6 students. We have two more weeks of collection to go and there has been an amazing example of the generosity and initiative from our youngest members of the community and by their families. It is a credit to them and hopefully these young students can keep this spirit of giving for years to come. A big thank you to families who have donated so far; we are very appreciative of your support.

Last Wednesday, the annual Touch Football match between Year 6 classes occurred for the Gerard Butler Shield. Gerard was a student here at Terrace who lost his battle with illness as a Year 7 student in 1994. A match is played in his memory and the boys once again played hard and fair. It had previously been a Year 7 contest but we are now in our third year with Year 6 students as the leaders of our Primary. Congratulations to all classes on the spirit in which the games were played. Class winners for 2017 were 6 Blue.

Next Tuesday, our Year 5 students will embark on their retreat at Tennyson. This is a chance for the year level to stop and reflect on the journey that has taken place so far. It has been a whirlwind experience for them to begin life at Terrace and it is great to have this opportunity to stop and connect with what has happened. This reflective time gives each student a chance to tap into the spiritual dimension of his life and to prepare for what lies ahead this year and beyond. The focus of the retreat is friendships - ones that have been made and ones that will be made as their Terrace experience continues.

Theatresports

Congratulations to our Senior A and Junior B teams who are through to the finals rounds for the Youth Theatresports competition. The Senior semi final will be held next Tuesday night (22August) at Waterford Place, starting at 7pm. A large contingent of Red and Black in the audience with certainly lift our players.

Music

Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival (QCMF)

This weekend will see Terrace Music take on all Catholic Schools from Queensland and various parts of Australia and New Zealand at what we consider to be our Grand Final for the year. The four days of competition will see 29 ensembles and 719 boys take the stage against 94 other schools, 536 ensembles and upwards of 14 000 musicians across eight venues.

QCMF is the largest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. With 29 ensembles, Terrace will have the second largest music program participating this weekend.

This weekend, all our ensembles will be performing for the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) which will be taking place at Villanova College. This is our “grand final” event for music and, as such, it is expected that these performances take priority. A complete schedule for the event is currently on the Terrace App and, as is usual for all events, more detailed information has been sent out via Parent Lounge. Ensemble directors and your sons have been working very hard to deliver their best performances. It is always a busy but rewarding weekend for our musicians, providing them with a great performance experience. Please come out and support them and I would encourage them to stay and listen to other ensembles in their section. Please ensure that your son has his Terrace Music folder (with music) and the correct uniform (as outlined on the Event Memo) before the festival. Congratulations to all the premier ensembles (SWE, TJO, Waterford Soloists, Terrace Choir, and 1^st Percussion Ensemble) for their performances on the Music Spirit Assembly today. This assembly provides an opportunity to showcase the best of Terrace Music, and to acknowledge the commitment of our Year 12 students in the lead up to QCMF. Next week, the Terrace Guitar Ensemble will perform on College Assembly.

Applications for the 2018 Young Conservatorium programs have now opened. All applications must be submitted online through our website, to apply now please click here ($30 for a single applicant /$60 for a family application). The closing date for the main 2018 intake is Saturday 9 September 2017, with applicable auditions being held between 3 - 21 October 2017.

Talkin’ Jazz will be holding a performance workshop, for interested students, at the Brisbane Jazz Club during the September school holidays. This is always an exciting opportunity for those who have a strog grasp of their instrument and are interested in learning more about jazz. More information can be found by clicking here.

FINISHING OFF THE SEASON

This weekend is the completion of Round 6, our traditional ‘BYE’ weekend where Rugby will play Downlands College from Toowoomba and Basketball will have break. For the remaining one third of the season – Rounds 7, 8 and 9, it is important to maintain focus and finish off the respective seasons well. Certainly, for both First teams, the boys are committed to trying to win three from three to secure a top line position on the table.

Motivation to be the best you can be and produce top performances means committing to training and game day. An away fixture to BGS is almost a home game for Terrace, and then home games to TGS and BBC ensure a good finish to the year.

Stay focused, train well – finish off your season as strong as you started.

PLANNING AHEAD

As we near the completion of Term 3 Activities of Rugby and Basketball, it is time to turn our attention to the commencement and planning of Term 4 and Term 1 2018, and considering Football – Term 2 2018.

Track and Field is the number one, primary focus of the Term 4 sporting program. It is the ‘in season’ activity, and as such all planning for other activities falls secondary in their consideration. Track and Field will host training days in the first week of the September Holiday period and will offer a camp for the boys involved in the second week at the Currimundi Sport and Recreation Centre.

Term 4 Volleyball, Cricket and Rowing will have a modified start to their pre-seasons to allow Track and Field an uninterrupted path to the GPS Championships in late October.

Should any clash of training, or fatigue be occurring due to training overload from other activities, then all other activities should be censored to ensure Track and Field is the priority.

PLANNING AND TRAINING TIMES

Understanding how training days operate allows for a better coordinated approach to sport and to juggling time demands.

In Term 1 Cricket, Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 will train a Monday/Wednesday rotation. Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 will train a Tuesday/Thursday rotation. This then allows the pre-season of Football and Tennis to dovetail into the reverse planning of training days to circumvent clashes.

• Years 5, 6, 7 and 8: Tuesday/Thursday
• Years 10, 11 and 12: Monday/Wednesday

Boys can train 4 afternoons a week for Cricket and Football respectively if they wish, or select a modified schedule.

This works for Cricket/Football/Tennis in Term 1 but not for Swimming, Rowing and Volleyball due to greater external constraints. Cross Country pre-season will be mornings only, Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

The rotational training schedule will apply to Football and Rugby in Term 2 also.

Representative Sport

Terrace students are eligible to trial for selection into District and Met Nth Regional representative teams in a number of sports. Our primary students nominate via City Dist. and our secondary students via

Nth Independent or in some cases Met Nth direct depending on the sport. Boys will only be nominated if they are of a high standard and meet qualifying times in respective sports.

City District Term 2 Sports are:

• Cricket date 18 August –Open to all boys turning 12. Nominations close Friday 18 August

Direct nominations to Met Nth Sports are:

• Cricket date 5 September – Open to 13-14 years. Nominations close Friday 1 September

As the Ekka has rolled into town and folk from across country Queensland have flocked to Brisbane to proudly display their award-winning process, I am reminded of my own family history. My mother, having grown up on a sheep property outside Warwick, has ensured that I’ve always been aware of where she grew up and where I come from. In other words, she made sure I knew the difference between Muckadilla and Augathella. In thinking about all of this, a word sprung to mind: roots.

Our motto at Terrace this year is 18 000 Strong. It acknowledges the 18 000 Terracians who have gone before us and challenges us to uphold and build upon their traditions. In short, 2017 is about roots.

We learnt in Science, before I discontinued my academic endeavours in that particular field of study, that an animal with genetically diverse roots will be far stronger than one with parents of similar genetic makeup. In much the same way, what makes Terrace strong is the diversity of young men who have passed through this College. Over time Terrace has developed a rich culture of celebrating young men from all different facets of College life. Whether it be a premiership in Debating or Rugby, an A in your math test or in your AMEB piano exam, Terrace will acknowledge you.

To meet the challenge set out for us by our motto, we must continue to celebrate this diversity today. We can’t all be stars on the rugby field, excel in the classroom, or act on the stage. But as a community, by celebrating all these differing talents equally, we can make our school a better place and grow our roots to make us strong.

Spring Luncheon | 1 September | Hillstone, St Lucia

Preparations are wrapping up for the TLG Spring Luncheon on 1 September at Hillstone. Apologies again to those who missed out but please remember that you are most welcome at the Gambaro’s after party. We will start to arrive there around 3pm.

Gregory Terrace Golf Day

The President of the Gregory Terrace Old Boys has passed on an invitation for ladies to gather some friends and go along to the golf day at the Brisbane Golf Club, Tennyson, on Friday 25 August 2017. QCS 29 and 30 August

A very big thank you to the wonderful response by the Year 12 mothers to provide and serve food for our seniors on their big QCS days. The food offered will keep the boys very happy and sustained during those long days of testing. Thank you to Helen Smethurst for the fabulous planning for this.

Canteen

Last Saturday was yet another glorious day at Tennyson with our Rugby teams playing against TSS. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make this a successful day, both inside the canteen and on the grounds. We were flat out for the day once again and it is always such a pleasure seeing all those smiling boys coming to the counter. It is a wonderful way to get to know lots of people in our community so please come and help out when you can by signing on through the volunteer signup sheets that go out with the Sport Office notices on team lists and schedules. We often have good support in the morning time slots but frequently need a few extra hands between the Seconds and Firsts games turnarounds and during their half time breaks.
