Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

This week, our young men in Years 5, 7 and 9 have participated in the NAPLAN testing program.  I have been very impressed with how the students have approached the tests and the level of commitment shown.  My thanks also extend to the many staff who have been involved in preparing the students and for their administration and supervision of the tests.  Thank you and well done to everyone involved.

The College Musical, We Will Rock You began this week.  I look forward to attending the show on Saturday night.  From all reports it is an outstanding production.  From the singing, to the costumes and the props, the reports are all excellent.  I offer my congratulations to all involved and thank you for your hard work and dedication.

This week also saw the first of our Year 12 Mother and Son Masses.  These Masses are a special celebration and a wonderful way to share that relationship between mother and son.  We have many great celebrations at Terrace; however, these Masses are, in my opinion,  amongst the more personal and powerful liturgies.  My thanks to all the mothers and sons who attend, the staff who attend in support and those who prepare the Masses.

Last Saturday, as well as Tennis and Football against Anglican Church Grammar, Terrace hosted a special gathering of Christian Brothers and lay people who are part of the wider Edmund Rice Network.  We came together to listen and hear from Br Philip Pinto.  Br Philip is the former Congregational Leader of the Christian Brothers and a man of great wisdom and insight.  His talk focused on our future directions and our spirituality and provided each of us with some guidance and direction about who we are and how, as members of the Edmund Rice Network, we can continue to undertake the work that Edmund began over 200 years ago.  It was truly a transformational experience and a privilege to be a part of.

Last week I wrote to all the Year 12 students congratulating them on their efforts so far, as well as encouraging each of them to continue to ‘build the momentum’.  We are now past the half way point of the term.  This message of ‘KEEP WORKING’ is relevant for all students from Years 5 to 12.  Assignment season is in full swing and good planning and careful time management are key to producing successful assignments.  It is important for all students to keep up the good work.

Finally this week, I wish to share that I have been fielding some concerns from some of our neighbours regarding parents driving rapidly through nearby streets and parking across driveways etc.  At Terrace, we value the importance of being a good neighbour.  To assist, we need parents to help by also exercising good and safe habits when driving in the streets around the College.  It is both a safety and a community issue and I ask everyone to assist.  On a similar note, could I please remind parents that the staff car park is not a drop-off/pick-up zone, nor a thoroughfare area or parent parking area between 7am and 4pm each day.  Your assistance in adhering to this issue would also be appreciated.

Have a great week.
God Bless,

Dr Michael Carroll
College Principal

College Dean | Mr Chris Ryan

The Bottom and Top Car Parks

Thank you to the extended community for the excellent job you have done in managing the building project thus far. It is greatly appreciated.

Dr Carroll has highlighted the importance of parents not using the bottom staff car park as a pick up, drop off or thoroughfare between 7am and 4pm each week day. We have a minimum of onsite parking for our 190 full time staff and your cooperation in not driving on to the site is needed please for both resource and safety reasons. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

A reminder to please be mindful of not parking over the Victoria Street driveway of the top car park when dropping off or picking up as approximately 60 staff park in there each day.

College Musical

I attended the opening night of the musical We will Rock You on Wednesday evening and I sincerely congratulate all on their achievements. The student and parent commitment is extraordinary and I wish to commend and thank all staff who commit strongly and generously to making this ambitious project a reality. Thank you and congratulations one and all - another example of Terrace partnerships in action.

Staff News

We congratulate Ms Sian Graham, a member of the Year 10 Waterford teaching team on the news of her pregnancy. Ms Graham will take Semester 2 2018 and Semester 1 2019 as maternity leave. We wish her well for continued health and the safe arrival of her baby. Ms Graham’s classes will be facilitated by Mrs Suzanne Black who is a member of the Waterford team and will take over the two Year 10 Drama classes. Mrs Susie Cooper will lead Ms Graham’s remaining classes and History and Religious Education classes that Mrs Black loses to assist. We thank Mrs Black and Mrs Cooper for their willingness to assist the College at this time.

Next week we welcome back to the College Mrs Nicolette Cleary after a period of leave. It will be lovely to see her back at  school. Mrs Susie Cooper, as mentioned above, is a recently retired member of staff who supports the College and boys brilliantly in these situations. We thank Mrs Cooper for her tremendous late notice support this term and look forward to seeing her at Waterford next term.

Dean of Studies | Acting Dean, Mr Mason Hellyer

The boys are at an ‘interesting’ point in the term, with many assignments due and exams on the horizon. The Sport and Culture programs are in the middle of their respective seasons and the musical is in full swing this week. Therefore, it is vitally important that students are organised and following their study plans in order to maximise their available study time.

At this busy time, it is easy to leave study and revision until later in the term. However, this can produce a ‘hole’ in a student’s knowledge in exam subjects, which is difficult to recover from. One solution here is to dedicate small, yet consistent times, for study/revision. That is, spend 10-20min per subject per night on study for exam subjects before working on assignment subjects.

Other avenues for assistance at this time can be found through staff tutoring, Study Hall (Years 8-11) and Study Group (Year 12). Students can make appointments for staff tutoring with their teacher or the scheduled Tutor times can be found on the Parent Lounge and College App. Study Group (Years 11 and 12) occurs every afternoon from 3.15 – 5.30pm in rooms 4.22 and 4.23, any Senior student is welcome to work under the supervision of a recent Old Boy.

Years 9 and 10 students are being asked to select either History or Geography for Semester 2. An email has been sent to all Years 9 and 10 parents and students with instructions on how to make their selection. Students are directed to discuss their choice with their parents, make their selection online via the email, print a receipt with their parent’s signature and return the selection receipt to either Student Services (Year 9) or Waterford Reception (Year 10). If there are issues with accessing the online selection, please contact the Studies Office.

The 2018 NAPLAN testing program was completed this week. Thank you to all of the students involved in giving their best effort in the four exams over the three days of testing.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Fall

On Monday evening, we hosted our annual event for Year 7 boys and their mum or other significant female mentor.  This year’s group broke all attendance records, with more than 130 pairs taking part in an evening of unique conversation and interaction.  I thank the huge number who came along and also the Year 11 students who generously gave their time to assist with the running of the evening.  One part of the evening allows mums to hear comments from boys who are not their own sons and many expressed how impressed they were with the maturity and depth of thought shown by our Year 7 students.  I thank everyone who took the time to make the evening a success and I thank our mums for your ongoing efforts to support your sons to be the best that they can be.  Yours is not an easy job and I hope that Terrace helps to make it a little easier at least some of the time.

We have reached the halfway point of Term 2 and are well beyond the mid-point of the eight week teaching time before exams commence.  I know that there are a lot of young men, particularly in Years 11 and 12 who are feeling some stress around their academic load.  Like many aspects of life, schools are cyclical, with periods of peak busyness when students are inclined to feel overwhelmed to some degree.  As most adults can attest, stress can be minimised by simple strategies such as being organised and starting early, skills that don’t always come naturally to adolescent boys.  The support of school and family in building these skills is critical.  Social interactions with family and friends, the therapeutic effect of exercise and sufficient sleep are of critical importance to the wellbeing of young men, so making time for these things, even during busy periods, needs to remain a priority.

Over the next week or two, we will be asking all students to complete two annual pastoral surveys.  One survey is anonymous and focuses on school culture in terms of matters such as relationships, while the other explores the individual student’s journey in order to track his wellbeing.  The data we gather assists us in adjusting our pastoral care practices and to provide the best of care for all students.  I will write to parents with further information in the coming days.  Parents will have the option to elect for their son to opt out of completing one or both of the surveys if they wish.

Our 1st XI Football team play at BGS this Saturday and the Senior leaders have made a strong push for support.  Just a friendly reminder that all boys who stay to support must be in their academic uniform.  This includes those who have already played on the day.  Again, we look forward to a positive and successful day.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

Brothers and Sisters

It was at that moment that it struck me...this person (Edmund Rice), born two hundred years earlier, in a totally different culture...look how our lives have enmeshed. And there’s something that I believe very strongly today -  the emerging spirituality is reminding us time again that we are connected. In fact, not only are we connected, we are one. We are one. The stranger is my brother I haven’t met. We are one. I see that in India time and again. Now, I’m seeing it through a different lens and watching all these people, the crowds of people just passing each other. And I often have to stop and say ‘These are my brothers and sisters’.

As the gathering in College Hall listened intently, these were the words of the former Christian Brothers' Congregation Leader Br Philip Pinto. Br Pinto is visiting Australia from his home in India to assist our national Edmund Rice network to discern a path for the future of Edmund Rice ministries in Oceania. While doing so, his presence and captivating presentations have been a powerful beacon of hope and optimism with respect to how the charism of Edmund Rice, centred on the Gospel of Jesus, is as relevant today as it has ever been.

As a case in point, with respect to how the Edmund Rice spirit remains alive amongst our Terrace Family, the Treacy House community embarked on a “Pay it Forward” initiative. Treacy House students and staff were involved in several activities, including the provision of a shoe polish station, icy poles and drinks stations for students, picking up rubbish during lunch breaks, as well as a lunch and a car wash for staff. The motivation behind this was a desire to emulate the values and presence of Edmund Rice by enacting random acts of kindness in the hope that these acts of kindness can be paid forward to someone else.  One good deed might not seem like much, but if everyone does something good for someone else, then the cycle of generosity and kindness can spark us to become better people. Simple, yet powerful stuff!

This weekend’s Pentecost Sunday is the celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. In many ways, Pentecost is celebrated as the birthday of the Church. The birth of a call to respond as community to the messages of the Gospel. How do we respond to Pentecost? How do we as a community acknowledge the presence and workings of the Holy Spirit among our Terrace Family? Treacy House’s “Pay it Forward” initiative has led us closer to understanding the answers to these questions.

Just as Treacy House has displayed, Pentecost reminds us that whether it be the joyous moments or the moments of struggle, there is a powerful presence at play. This presence, if we allow it, can strengthen us as individuals and as a community.

Below: Treacy House students paying it forward.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Opening Night – A Smash Hit

We Will Rock You hit the stage last night as a black tie event to a sell out audience who were eager to see and support the 120 cast, crew and musicians from All Hallows’ School and Terrace. Their charisma and professionalism captured the audience from the first scene, which lead to a standing ovation at the end of the show. A show of this magnitude has had so many people behind the scenes to support the students, giving them a platform of performance they desire. This production, while appearing complex, has been made easy due to the dedication of all involved, which has lead to a more succinct and less time consuming rehearsal season leading in to the show. In particular, I would like to thank the staff and parents who bring their experience and expertise to this production, helping us be amongst the topAarts programs in Brisbane.

Well done and we look forward to three more sell out shows and standing ovations - the looks on the students' faces says it all.

Director of Music | Acting Director, Mr Jan Hewerdine

Last night, we had our opening performance of We Will Rock You, which is currently running at the Gardens Theatre until Saturday. An enthusiastic full house coupled with stellar performances from the cast, orchestra and crew made for a memorable night.

Congratulations to 16 of our musicians who will be participating in in the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University State Honours Ensemble Program, Middle School - South East Queensland 2018. Bravo!

Next week, College Assembly will feature the Terrace Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Mr Jan Hewerdine.

As we approach the end of term, could I please ask that students keep an eye on their lesson timetables and notify their Music/Speech and Drama teachers in advance of any absences related to in-class assessment. Most of our teachers are employed on a casual basis with teaching portfolios spread across multiple schools. Early notification of such absences will assist them in making the most of their time and ensuring your son's lessons are kept up to date.

To discontinue lessons, please email music@terrace.qld.edu.au at least two full weeks prior to the end of term (Friday 8 June). Notification after this time will incur a full term’s fee for the following term.

For those of you who participate in our Premier Ensembles, the Terrace Shop now has a selection of black microfibre shirts available for $50. These will be required, along with black trousers, for the Norman Clarke Concert later this term.

Please check the Terrace App and Parent Lounge regularly as this is where information regarding various events (see the list below) will now be published. As events are approved and posted to the Parent Lounge, you will be sent an email advising the name of the event, including the Event Memo, to check and you will be required to give a response regarding attendance. Event Memos will also be available through the Terrace App in Culture>Music.

Round 4

Another good day across all the teams in the Round 4 fixture against ACGS, last Saturday. Both programs had dominant days again with majority of wins over their opposition.

The program from Year 7 through to Open had a very good day clearly winning the majority of games, with the Years 5 and 6 boys finding the going a little bit tougher. The 1st XI played two very different halves of football, showing a very accommodating relaxed side in the first half to be followed by a very determined and committed second half performance. In the end the final score was a 3-3 draw, securing a valuable point to see the team currently sitting in equal fourth position.

The standout performances of the day were the Year 10A team to come from 0-2 down at half time, to run out winners 3-2, and the Year 9A team who convincingly defeated their opponents 5-0.

In Tennis, the Terrace boys were again dominant across the year levels and divisions, with the 1st IV fixture being over by lunch time, the team winning 7-1. The victory was highlighted in the singles win by Yosua Lumbanradja, Year 9, who has stepped up to cover the injured Dom Anderson. Well done Yosua on your first singles victory in the 1st IV.

This Saturday the programs travel to play our nearest rivals BGS at Northgate (Football) and Spring Hill (Tennis). These traditional rivals always put on a good competition and it will be a challenging day across both programs and all teams. Good luck for the weekend – always play in the best of sportsmanship.

This Friday 18 May our Cross Country runners head out to Limestone Park for their hit out over the GPS championship course in preparation for the main day on Wednesday 30 May. Head of Cross Country Mr Ebrington is full of praise for the boys involved and the way they are applying themselves.

The Weekly Wrap

Football Wrap

1st XI

It could be that said competitive sport and all its processes and values - commitment, sacrifice, work ethic and team ethos, to mention a few – are reflective of the character of the individuals that partake and that comprise the team. After all, isn’t a team a group of individual talents that pool resources for a common goal?

That being the case, the 1st XI on Saturday showed they are men of character! Down two nil at half-time, in blustery conditions and due to some sloppy application to the task, they fought like warriors after the restart to get themselves back on level terms with some great football and good team play. As the cliché goes, it was a “game of two halves”.

In football no matter the quality of the opposition, there will always be some good moments in the game. Churchie is a good football side and put us under pressure at times. One of those moments resulted in an unfortunate penalty awarded against us that was converted. Despite trailing again, the Terrace boys dug in once more and equalised with an opportunistic long-range effort from Byron McLeod to complete a fine hat trick.

Despite dominating the final moments of the game, we just couldn’t break down a quality Churchie defence and walked away feeling it was two points lost rather than a point salvaged. The lesson, however, is that we must be switched on from the start and not put ourselves in the situation that we had to chase the game. That is all part of the development process of young footballers.

A/B Football Program

It was a great weekend of football for the Gregory Terrace A/B program to conclude Round 4.  We all wanted to ensure we had made improvements from our away trip in Round 2 and impressed across the board this time. The player's development and football style of play showed big improvements. A special mention to our 8Bs who have now won four from four this season and are improving week by week.

Tennis Wrap

Welcome to the half way point of the season. This week the Terrace Tennis teams play Brisbane Grammar School in matches from Years 5 through to 12. There will also be internal and supplementary matches. Brisbane Grammar historically are the most successful GPS School in terms of premierships and they will be looking to add another title in 2018. This round will provide great challenge throughout all year levels and the program looks forward to the challenge that it presents

The results from the round against Anglican Church Grammar School were excellent in our Years 5 through to 12, winning 19 of 32 games on offer. Churchie were fantastic hosts and we thank them for their hospitality in matches played at their East Brisbane courts.

The Year 5 boys showed great skills and competitive tennis to come away with some wins. The 5As showed improvement with doubles tactics and finished with a strong win of 40 games to 16. The 5Bs had a few tough battles and lots of great rallies to finish strongly with 47-31 games. The 5C and 5D teams also showed great performances and good team spirit with lots of support for their teammates, doubling their opponents score. 5F had a good hit out with some shuffling of players meaning that played with only a three man team and 5G had a tough day against the older, more experienced Year 6 Nudgee College boys.  However, they showed some competitive tennis throughout each game, with Ben Sandstrom having a major impact putting 13 out of 18 games on the scoreboard. A special mention to Cooper Kennedy who served four aces in the last two games of his singles match.

A special mention also goes out to Freddie Marshall (9A) who demonstrated remarkable professionalism is his singles match and was highly competitive, despite carrying an injury.

1st IV

With our team still suffering from injuries we know that all our matches through to the end of the season will need to be well managed to get a positive result. Our match against Churchie was certainly no different. Our team of Bryce Robinson, Stephen Stoddart, Xavier Lim, Yosua Lumbanradja and George Campbell were well aware of the difficult task that lay ahead going into the day.

On the day Bryce was the first to finish with a 6-0, 6-2 result. This was closely followed by Steve who played solidly for his 6-4, 6-3 win. Meanwhile Xavier and Yosua were both locked in a battle. Xavier got off to a slow start going down quickly 1-5 and set points. He then settled down, got into his groove and reeled off 12 straight games. His pressure and concentration were relentless. Yosua went game for game with his opponent until he broke in the eleventh game and then held serve to take the set 7-5. He then got an early break in the second set and served it out for a 6-3 result.

This put us up 4-0 in rubbers with the doubles still to be played. In the doubles we substituted George Campbell in for an injured Bryce. Stephen and Xavier both comfortably won their doubles for the day 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1 while Yosua and George lost their first doubles to the number one Churchie pair 6-3, 6-1 but went on to win their second doubles match 6-2, 7-6 to give us a 7 rubbers to 1 win for the day.

Some of the best moments from Saturday's match included; Xavier winning 12 games straight after being down set points, Yosua winning his first singles match for the season and George winning a doubles match in his 1st IV debut.

This week we go up against a very strong BGS team. It’s another match where we are going to have to perform at our very best.

Team of the Week – 10D

Nick Angus
Serge Akkari
Zain Wickham
Jack Jilek

Serge Akkari performed well in both singles and doubles, with convincing wins. Serge partnered with Nick Angus in the final 10Ds match for the day, and won the round by one game for their team following a great win.

Doubles Pairing of the Week

Harry Dutton and Xavier Stiles (8B), mounting impressive 6/1 and 7/5 wins over an imposing Churchie side. The boys maintained their positive mindframe to help clutch both wins. This result is a great reflection of the boys' hard work and commitment to training.

Play of the Day

Oliver Koce and Emilio Mollo (8B) who were down 2/5 and match point and through an amazing fight back came back from the brink and pulled off an impressive 7/5 win. Edward Grice (6D) also fought extremely hard to come back from 2/5 down in his singles to win 6/5 which is a brilliant effort

Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, Zach Boland

King of the Hill

With Week 5 coming to an end we may hope that things will slow down just a little bit. But sadly, this will not be the case. In fact, the opposite may well be true. This Saturday marks the weekend of the King of the Hill challenge, the battle of Spring Hill, the clash against Brisbane Grammar School.  Our rivalry with the school across the road will continue to be a spectacle. Good luck to all Tennis and Football players. Terrace supporters - we need you! Be brave and game. 8.30am onwards at Grammar Tennis Court and 2pm at Northgate. Be there.

In our classrooms things are also getting intense. Assignments are building up and due very soon for most students. There is also the constant challenge of revision that may seem, at times, difficult to maintain and challenging to fit into our schedules. On top of the homework that sometimes seems a little overwhelming, we all have our co-curricular activities that are boiling away in the background of our already busy lives.

This is a snapshot of the life of a Terracian. It is a life that is not for the faint hearted. With such demands on us, sacrifices have to be made. However, one problem is that important aspects of life are often pushed aside,  one of these being sleep. Studies have shown that teenagers need approximately nine hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep can affect our mood, our behaviour, our academic performance and our ability to think clearly. So, to have maximum energy for Saturday and the rest of the term, we need to try to organise our time so that we can enjoy a longer snooze time to give our bodies and brains an opportunity to recharge.

Terrace Ladies Group

Tennyson Canteen

Please keep an eye out for the volunteer list in the Round 5 Football email and, if possible, offer an hour of your time. Often we are out Tennyson prior to our sons’ games and could use this spare time to lend a hand to help in the smooth running of both the canteen and BBQ. This Saturday it would be good to see Year 9 and 10 parents fill those volunteering spots. Our boys love their food after playing so any home baking would also be greatly appreciated.

Year 12 Mothers’ Masses

On Tuesday morning at 7.30am the College will host Mass for the second group of mothers of our Seniors - Barrett, Buckley, Kearney, Magee and Mahoney.

Past Mothers' Mass

On Sunday 27 May we have the Past Mothers' Mass at 10am in the Chapel of the Holy Family. A beautiful morning tea is planned for afterwards in the Founders' Room. Please pass on the invitation to your mothers, mothers-in-law, aunts, grandmothers or friends who have been through Terrace with their boys over the past decades. It is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect and to celebrate those who have gone before us. They have been the ones who were instrumental in creating the Terrace Family we appreciate so much. The invitation can be found on the College Events page, or via this link to purchase a $20 ticket to the morning tea (the $20 fee covers catering for the morning tea).
