Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

A belated welcome back to Term 4 and thank you to all those who have enquired about my leave.

I wanted to begin this article by acknowledging and thanking a number of people, who over the last period of time, assumed additional responsibilities so that I could take my leave.

Firstly, I sincerely thank Mr Chris Ryan for accepting the Acting Principal role in my absence. Chris did an outstanding job, as expected, and demonstrated professionalism, care and sensitivity in undertaking the role, I am most grateful. I also wish to acknowledge the passing of his mother during this time. Our thoughts remain with Chris and his family.

Other people who assumed Acting positions in my absence include Mr Damien Fall, Mr Damien Cuddihy, Mr Mason Hellyer and Mr Rob Sweeper. I thank each of these people for assuming additional responsibilities and congratulate them on how they undertook their roles. Finally, I thank the College Leadership Team for their willingness to accept additional responsibilities in my absence. Without the efforts and generosity of many, I could not have taken leave and Liz and I are very thankful. Equally, we were very glad to return home and reconnect with family and the Terrace community.

Term 4 is a short and busy term and is filled with significant events such as graduations, the Celebration of Excellence and farewell assemblies. As we approach the end of Week 3 of an eight week term, I encourage parents to ensure their sons are focussed and working hard. There can be a feeling of “it is the end” during this term and this can adversely affect results, behaviour and attitude. It is always important to ‘finish well’. These are words that I use regularly at this time of the year. I strongly believe that the tone of the year and a measure of its success is very much influenced by ‘finishing well.’

Tomorrow night, the College is holding the Terrace Jazz Night. The evening, Jailhouse Rock will be hosted at Boggo Road Gaol and is shaping up to be a great event. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Following this week's Junior GPS Track and Field Championships, next week the Senior GPS Track and Field Championships will be held. Our athletes have been training hard and I am confident that this hard work will pay off. I wish all our athletes the best.

Finally, this week, I again reiterate the fact that it is nice to be back at Terrace and I wish all families the very best for this full and very busy final term.

College Principal

It has been nice to welcome Dr Carroll back to the College. I have appreciated the opportunity to act as College Principal for the first time and it is a privilege I don’t take lightly, so thank you to all staff, students and parents with whom I have come into contact during this time for their cooperation and support. Thank you especially to all those who have expressed condolences on my Mum’s passing. Her brother was a Terracian, so we are all connected in the end. I look forward to the remainder of the year back in my usual role as College Dean. Congratulations and thank you to Mr Damien Fall for the able and diligent way he acted as College Dean during this time. I personally appreciated his counsel and support.

We are presently working hard on our staffing and timetabling plans for 2018. The College is currently advertising for roles in the English, History, Religious Education and Economics/Business teaching areas. Inevitably, other needs will emerge over the remainder of the year. Mr Gary Stickley finished his time with us last week and was a delight to have with us, we look forward to other opportunities for Mr Stickley to be at Terrace. As mentioned above, Mr Damien Fall and Mr Damien Cuddihy, Mr Mason Hellyer and Mr Rob Sweeper completed their time in their acting roles last week. Thank you to all of these gentlemen for a job well done. We are blessed to have such skilled people be able to step into significant leadership roles.

We continue to focus on our preparation for the changes in Senior Schooling that commence in 2019. Dr Carroll, Mrs Quinn and I have benefitted from our participation in the QCCA Principals Conference held at the Brisbane Convention Centre during this week and we will use this and other professional links we have to inform our ongoing decision making. Thank you to all current Year 9 parents who attended our information session last week.

Academic Excellence

In Week 1 at assembly, we shared with students the statistics on the number of awards achieved for academic excellence that we will recognise at the Evening of Excellence on Monday 6 November. It was most encouraging to witness the reaction of our students to these most encouraging statistics. At this College Assembly, we also acknowledged publicly the effort and commitment that our teachers make to support and encourage our boys. Names of prize winners were published outside Student Services following this assembly.

Balancing Commitments

Last Saturday, I was invited to speak with the Rowing community about how to manage both a commitment to Rowing and to academics. It was indeed a privilege to speak with a group that was most enthusiastic in seeking ways to ensure that they could achieve their best in both their chosen sport and their studies. We shared past academic results of boys who had rowed which highlighted that boys need to be very organised around their time and their thinking if they wish to succeed in both. We discussed the need to make the classroom the key focus in the whole process of learning, understanding and revising. The challenge and importance of concentrating in class led our community to “play the concentration game”. This “game” involves students timing how long they are thinking only about what the teacher is delivering in the classroom. Many boys are quite surprised when they follow this exercise where their time of concentration is far below their anticipated outcome. The aim of the “game” is to increase the length of time that a student can concentrate for by measuring it until a pattern or habit is formed around a sustained concentration across a full lesson time. My emphasis to the rowers was that when they are involved in their rowing, rowing is their sole focus. Similarly, when in the classroom or doing homework, assignments or revision, their studies is their focus. This message is valid for any activities that our boys are involved in – not just our rowers. Time lost in a classroom means that this time must be compensated for after school along with homework, assignments and revision.

Term 4

As we come to the end of Week 3, I encourage all our boys to be fully committed to their study routines. We need to be at the peak pace that we were at across other terms. As the duration of this term is short, we need to make sure that our outcomes for Term 4 are not compromised due to lack of preparation and poor planning.

After a stint as Acting College Dean, I have this week returned to familiar territory as Dean of Students. It has been my privilege this week to be part of our Year 11 Leadership Camp, held at Runaway Bay. The fact that we invest heavily in the time and staff required to run such an activity is an indication of the importance we place on student leadership. The camp is a wonderful exploration of what it means to be a leader within the House, the wider College community and the world beyond Terrace. The Seniors of 2018 were fortunate to have Br Damien Price facilitate a large portion of the camp. As a former member of the College CLT and an outstanding source of wisdom, Br Price is a great gift to our young men. Opportunities for students to experience formation opportunities delivered by people so close to the Edmund Rice story are rare. Our young men are privileged to have such an opportunity and we were proud of the way they engaged in the experience. The camp was also a chance for the boys to hear from next year’s College Captain, Jacob Montaner and Vice Captains, Zachary Boland, Thomas Dearlove, Tom Pappalardo and Will Roach. I complement each of them on the outstanding start to their journey of leadership. We look forward to a memorable year from the Senior class of 2018.

The GPS senior Track and Field Championships will be held next Friday 27 October and a change of venue means we will unfortunately have a reduced number of seats available to spectators. I have already written to families of Year 11 students to indicate that these young men are expected to attend as supporters. Due to seating restrictions, they will be only the one year level able to come along this year. We will acknowledge the team at next Tuesday’s College Spirit Assembly.

At eight weeks in length, Term 4 is the briefest of the year. Almost three of these weeks have already disappeared and the end of the year is fast approaching. In the last week, I have spoken with students about the need to live in the moment. At this time of year, it is understandable that there will be excitement about the approaching holidays, but there is much to be done before then. There is a need for every student to ensure that he continues to meet our standards and expectations in order to finish as well as possible. It is particularly important for Year 12 students who are understandably excited about the impending end of school, but who have so much at stake in the coming weeks. I encourage all students to remain disciplined and to work hard until the very end of term. Not much in life comes easily and we look forward to our students using the remainder of the term to challenge themselves to be the best that they can be.

Standing on the shoulders of the giants of those that have gone before

One of my favourite aspects of teaching is spending an extended time with future student leaders. Not just the five elected College Captains, but the 234 leaders within the prospective Senior cohort.

The Seniors of 2018 spent two enriching days away on their Leadership Camp exploring their collective approach to leadership as well as ways to enact this within the House and wider Terrace Family settings. A key aspect of the leadership challenge presented at the camp was honouring the past while creatively and authentically shaping the future of the College, knowing that one day others will look back while ‘standing on the shoulders of the giants of those that have gone before’.

Below are some excerpts from the Leadership Camp addresses of our newly appointed College Captains for 2018. We truly are in safe and capable hands.

Terrace gives us the chance ‘to be the best that we can be’ as individuals as well as opportunities to come together and work in synergy to do great things for Terrace. ‘Being free to be the best I can be’ means to be the best we can be without the fear of being judged by others.

Will Roach (2018 College Vice Captain)

‘Talk the talk and walk the walk’ simply translates to backing up what you say with your actions. If practised it has significant outcomes for the people around us. This year’s College Captains are a fine example of this. They challenged themselves from the outset to lead by example. Although Year 12 can be a challenging year, I have noticed that they continually put others before themselves, lending a hand wherever possible.

Zach Boland (2018 College Vice Captain)

As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition we have the responsibility to not only care for ourselves and our Terrace Family but also our surrounding community. I feel as though it would be a great challenge for our cohort to leave a lasting impression on the College’s social justice programs. This is only going to be achieved through the commitment and cooperation of our entire grade selflessly devoting our time to the needs of others.

Tom Pappalardo (2018 College Vice Captain)

The phrase ‘one person can make a difference’ can be interpreted in several different ways. Personally, I strongly believe that this phrase calls us as individuals to be committed in the support of those around us, whether it be marginalized groups, someone in our year level or our Year 5 Buddy. Quite simply, every day we come to school, we can be a person who can make a difference. As Year 12s in the white shirt, we must lead by example, showing the younger students how they too can be a person who makes a difference.

Tom Dearlove (2018 College Vice Captain)

The Terrace Gentleman. Three things spring to mind; socks up, shirts in, top button done up. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. A Terrace Gentleman is someone who supports those around him, someone who looks out for others, someone who cares about those around him. A Terrace Gentleman is humble, giving his all to everything he does. A Terrace Gentleman is at the service of others.

Jacob Montaner (2018 College Captain)

After speaking with many students and some of their parents regarding reports, conversations and circumstances can differ greatly. The one thing that is always consistent is when boys are disappointed with their result they are also disappointed with the effort that went with this. Our students are constantly reminded that success in life is about being consistent. You can’t complete a term’s work for all subjects in one week, this is also a very stressful situation for boys (and their parents) to be in.

Assignments are coming up and in a short term most will be due around the same date and time in class. It is paramount that work needs to be consistent when the opportunity is given. When the opportunity is wasted, boys tend to make up for this just before it is due, but of course the issue is complicated when they find themselves in this circumstance for multiple subjects.

In Formation, we have reviewed and reflected on Term 3’s results, each student should have completed a weekly plan as well as a Term plan for the first four weeks. We have now moved into our pastoral topics. Year 7s are looking at investigating emotions, Year 8s have looked at Daniel Goleman’s work on Emotional Intelligence and elements that are required to be successful leaders in this. Year 9s will watch a documentary ‘The Mask You Live In’ which delves into the topic of masculinity and challenges myths of what it means to be a man in today’s world. We look at all the qualities that boys admire in the men who play a major role in their life, we also look at the issues that teenage boys face in trying to figure out what it means to be a man, some needing to wear a ‘mask’ to cover who they really are.

The term will go quickly as we now head into Week 4, with exam block starting in Week 7. Study should be occurring each night after homework and assignment work is completed.

Jailhouse Rock

This is the showcase event for our Music program. Each year, we strive to make the event enjoyable for students, parents and staff. As we go to print, I am happy to announce we are at capacity! Should there be any change of plans due to weather, we will communicate this as soon as possible.

At Terrace, we are lucky to be able to draw on incredible depth in our staff and Old Boys for coaching. My sincere thanks to Ms Nicole Kirsch who coaches our young Terracian Theatresports players and Henry Bretz (GT2013) who has returned to coach our Senior teams.

This Friday night, we will be holding our annual Terrace Jazz Night at Boggo Road Gaol and will feature all of our jazz groups. Our special guest artist for the evening is Dean Vegas, Australia’s number one Elvis impersonator. As always, this will be a great evening and if you would like to join us and “do time on the inside”, book your tickets through College Events. In the event of inclement weather, the event will move to the Campbell Centre and, if required, the decision to change venue will be announced on Thursday afternoon.

The Celebration of Excellence featured artist workshop, held on Monday, was a great experience for our performers. Our students had the opportunity to work with seasoned performers Greg Moore (Ten Tenors), Brad Lever (Swing Central) and Chris Palmer (Guitar/Vocals), developing their vocal performance technique and stage craft skills.

The following music students have recently been awarded prizes in the ASME Young Composers Competition for 2017. Yang Zhang (Year 9) received a Highly Commended in the Middle School Ellaways Instrumental/Vocal Section for his composition “The Saxophone Joyride” for Saxophone Trio and Kevin Ye (Year 9) was awarded first place in the Middle School Binary Music Electronic Music Section for “We Are The Last Ones Out Here”. These students, along with other prize winners, are invited to a pre concert workshop on Sunday 22 October held at Vivace Piano and Strings, Macgregor, where they will meet the adjudicators, Dr Paul Bonetti and Mr James North and perform their works; it is at this concert that they are presented with their awards.

Today, our youngest members of the Track and Field team have had the opportunity to compete at the Junior GPS Track and Field Championships at the State Athletics Facility at Nathan.

The carnival runs all day, with multiple divisions in different disciplines e.g. eight divisions in 100M, eight divisions in 200M, etc. At these age levels, Under 10, Under 11 and Under 12, it is great to see so many boys getting the opportunity to run, jump and throw for Terrace.

One thing that has stood out this year is the number of boys who have engaged in Track and Field. It is fantastic to see the numbers, the boys' enthusiasm and the excitement that these young men have exhibited.

The Senior boys Under 14 through to Open will compete at another meet this Friday night in a schedule designed to replicate the upcoming Senior GPS Championships.

For the Senior boys it will be another meet at Nudgee College in a final hit out before their Championships on the evening of Friday 27 October.

Due to the unavailability of the main QSAC track, both the Junior and Senior Championships will be held on the State Athletics Facility – the second track at the complex.

This SAF has a recently re-laid surface, but has a much smaller grandstand – seating will be tight.

To celebrate the 2017 season, a small function will be held in the “Sprinters Room”. This is a free event and will be held immediately following the GPS presentations. The format will be the same as last year’s event with finger food and drinks available and should run for approximately one hour.

All Senior Track and Field boys are expected to attend this post Championship event, where awards will be presented.

Good luck to all boys for the next two weeks in their respective Championships.

Last Thursday, the College Captain of 2018, Jacob Montaner, was announced to the entire Terrace Family, alongside College Vice Captains, Zachary Boland, Thomas Dearlove, Thomas Pappalardo and William Roach. Having known most of these men for a while now, having seen them around the yard and involved in various events and activities at Terrace, it is obvious that these are all men of a high calibre. These Terrace Gentlemen have the backing of their cohort as well as their school and undoubtedly embody all the values that this College holds so dear. It is reassuring to know that this College is in such capable hands and the legacy of all the Senior cohorts past and present will undeniably be upheld next year.

With the announcement of next year’s College Captains also came the stark reminder that 2017 is drawing to a close. Personally, it only felt like yesterday that myself, Bill, Will, Jack and Matt were announced as the College Captains for 2017. In such a short time, we as a cohort, a school and a community have achieved so much. Academically we have all worked just as hard, if not harder, than previous years and the number of boys receiving academic excellence is a definite reflection of this. As a community in 2017, we have also come together many times to support and acknowledge one another and all we have achieved. This has been reflected in the numbers of boys who have come out to support not only the Firsts teams but also their year level. In the school yard, you only need look as far as a Senior interacting with his Year 5 or 7 buddy to feel the sense of respect every Terracian has for each other. This has been only but a small part of the legacy built this year, but it is none the less still something I am proud of and could never forget.

A special event in the year is our end of year TLG Thanksgiving Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Family, followed by morning tea in the Founders’ room, all are welcome. Afterwards, Year 12 mothers have their annual lunch at Gambaro Seafood Restaurant.

Assistance Needed - Year 12 End of Year Celebrations

In the next couple of weeks the TLG will be emailing to seek assistance for some end of school matters for the Year 12 boys. As such, help is sought from those with sons in Years 5-11 for wrapping gifts for the Year 12 boys on Monday 13 November from 9am in the Founders’ Room. Assistance will also be sought for some of the setting up for the Valedictory Dinner in City Hall on Friday 17 November, from 1.30pm.

As always, the TLG is helping the Terrace Uniform Shop with fitting out our new Terracians with their uniforms to start school in 2018. The Uniform Shop is looking for help over four weeks, commencing 24 October through to Friday 17 November. It is a lovely thing to serve the new boys coming to Terrace.
