Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

It was excellent to see so many families at the Parent/Teacher interviews on Wednesday. A key aspect to the academic success that Terrace students achieve is the strong partnership between teacher – parent – student. This strong partnership allows each of us to work together to enhance each individual student’s outcome. There is much evidence to support the importance of strong relationships in contributing to academic performance. I encourage you to follow this up with your son over the next couple of weeks.

As I mentioned in last week’s edition of the Terrace News, ‘mentoring interviews’ will take place between Group Tutors and students over the next couple of weeks. The purpose of these conversations is to reflect on last term and set some goals and strategies for this term. These mentor interviews are one aspect of this relationship forming that is central at Terrace.

Last weekend the Term 3 GPS season commenced with Chess, Basketball and Rugby against Nudgee. It was a successful round with Chess and Basketball registering good wins at First level and Rugby losing in a ‘nail-biter’ in the closing moments. Irrespective of the results, I was extraordinarily proud of our students on and off the field. The support from the sidelines was exceptional. I congratulate those students who were present for their attention to their uniform and the way they supported and acknowledged the players. This week we host Brisbane State High in the first of our home games. I ask that the high standards set at Nudgee with both uniform and support continues this week.

Finally this week, the House Choir Competition is scheduled for tomorrow night. This is always a spectacular night and I know the Houses have been working hard in preparing for this event. We are again expecting a large crowd and parking will be an issue. I would ask that we are considerate of our neighbours with respect to parking and noise and I thank you in advance for your support.

Next week is Catholic Education Week. As a Catholic school, we form part of the wider Catholic Education Community in Queensland and, as such, it is important that we recognise and acknowledge this privilege. The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is ‘Sharing the Journey’ theme. Terrace has a 143-year history in sharing the Catholic Education journey, so let us celebrate this journey.

College Principal

The College advertised three positions in the Courier Mail over last weekend; Head of English (Head of Languages Faculty), Coordinator of Japanese and eLearning Coordinator. Presently, we have three internal staff acting in these positions and it is our policy to invite both internal and external candidates to apply for senior and middle leadership positions when they become available.

This week we welcome back Mrs Lisa Betts to the teaching staff. Mrs Betts is working in the Exceptional Learners Faculty while Mrs Melissa Deacon is on leave. Ms Cassie Bampton is acting as Learning Support Coordinator during this time.

We have also welcomed Mr Padraic Gannon who has looked after Mr Hainstock’s classes while he has been on leave. We are blessed to be able to call on people of such experience.

Miss Georgia Power has tendered her resignation as Sport Administrator this week to follow up on a career opportunity in her field of study in marketing and public relations. We congratulate her and thank her for her positive contribution to what is a very busy and demanding area of the school. Miss Power’s calm and positive approach will be missed by the team in the Sports Office. Thank you and best wishes Georgia. The position will be advertised in due course.

PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT INTERVIEWS

Yesterday was our first round of interviews for parents and students with teachers. Again, my thanks to the many parents who support their sons by attending these interviews. It is a wonderful opportunity to gain strategies for the term ahead and to revise strategies that were successful and strategies that need to be addressed from Term 2.

YEAR LEVEL ASSEMBLIES

Year level assemblies have been held for all students within their respective year levels. At these assemblies students have been shown data that outlines their comparative results between Term 1 and Term 2 and also with past year levels. This data has allowed students to review and track their year level’s outcomes. Students have also been given strategies to follow for the term ahead. At these assemblies we have also acknowledged students who have made significant improvement across the terms.

OP ESTIMATED SCORES

This week and into the following week, both Year 11 and Year 12 students will receive estimated OP scores. Year 11 students will receive these from their House Dean and Year 12 students will receive their scores from their academic mentors. These scores are based upon an average QCS result and give students an indication, within two bands, of their estimated score based upon their current academic results. These interviews also discuss individual mentoring strategies for boys to maximise their outcomes. I encourage parents to have a conversation with their sons around these outcomes.

ACADEMIC MENTORING

Across the next few weeks, tutors will be discussing with students their academic outcomes from Term 2. These conversations allow our boys to reflect on “what worked” and “what didn’t work”. I encourage boys to take note of these reflections so they can build their own repertoire of best practice.

LITERACY

This year, one of our areas of focus is around literacy. Dr Ian Hunter has continued to work both with our staff and with our students to enhance our writing skills in particular. Last Friday, Dr Hunter spent the morning session with our Year 12 students. One of the skills employed by Dr Hunter is his skill in delivering specific guided strategies to produce a piece of prose. We will continue to embed these skills into our literacy curriculum.

GRIT

Across the holidays I enjoyed reading a book titled “Grit” by Angela Duckworth. The words on the front cover of the book are “why passion and resilience are the secrets to success”. While many teachers can share many stories of successful students, Angela Duckworth moved from teacher to psychologist when she realised that a student in her maths class, deemed to have little aptitude, was handing in perfect work. This student subsequently completed a PhD in mechanical engineering. I recommend this book. It will inspire and motivate at the least.

I was interested to listen to the Greg Inglis interview on the weekend about his ongoing struggles with mental illness. He spoke about growing up and being taught to “toughen up and play on and just get on with it.” Many of us can relate to that comment which is generally aimed at developing resilience in our children. Certainly, building resilience in our boys is a very important aspect of growing up, but like all practices, if this becomes the default then this approach can have some limitations. Central to Greg Inglis’ struggles was missing the “camaraderie, the talk, the laughter, everything that goes with it” from being involved in a team environment. The human interactions that nourish the soul. Schools have certainly witnessed a significant increase in the number of boys presenting with various forms of mental illness in the past decade. Our collective parenting experience tells us that there’s no “magic wand” when confronting mental illness just plenty of presence and patience for our young men. An insightful phrase from the Inglis interview was “it ain’t weak to speak”. Finding that crucial balance between developing resilience in our young men, whilst allowing them to recognise that it’s a positive character trait to be able to communicate how they feel. This awareness will help our sons to navigate through their adolescence with a little more confidence.

Last Saturday I spent the day on Ross Oval. I would like to make mention of how proud I was of the supporters and players who participated in the event. From the boys in the 6^th XV through to the 1^st XV, from the little Year 5s cheering at their first GT/NC rugby match to the Spirit Leaders out front, the boys were exceptional in their approach to the day on all fronts.

The Good Soil

I wish that my message today was about my success as an urban gardener and how I’ve mastered the tending of my lemon and lime trees and that I no longer need to go to Woolies. Rather, I’m miles from understanding horticulture but a little bit closer to understand the wonderful messages of the Gospel.

Fr Gerard continues to do a fantastic job of challenging students and staff with understanding Gospel readings. While listening to his homily at Tuesday Morning Mass I was again struck with his infectious enthusiasm for ensuring we take home some key messages. This continued after mass as we had a brief discussion about the following:

As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty. Matthew 13: 23

It dawned on me that a Terrace education aspires to just this. Our student formation program challenges our Terrace Family to be the “good soil” for others, establishing deeper self-awareness and more fruitful (pardon the pun!) relationships with others. This is a key tenant of a Catholic education.

Next week we join the 146 000 students and 18 500 teachers and staff of Catholic schools across Queensland to celebrate Catholic Education. You are warmly welcomed to our Terrace Family Catholic Education Week Mass in the Chapel of The Holy Family from 7.45am next Tuesday.

Congratulations to all students who have won academic medals this semester and well done to those students who have achieved this feat for the first time. Term 3 is well underway and is busy once again, but students are being reminded to prepare and plan their time. Assessment Calendars are now in circulation and it is important to be clear about which subjects require ongoing revision for exam time or those which require students to begin researching now for assignments due mid-term.

Over the next two weeks, Parent/Teacher interviews will take place. This is an important time for parents and students to reflect on efforts and achievements and to talk over plans to optimise learning opportunities for Semester 2 taking note of study spaces and time allocation for assignments and recreational activities. Keep in mind that work planned early and practised often will always assist the result whether it be in our classroom or in co-curricular activities.

Next week our community will commemorate and reflect on all the amazing values, beliefs and actions that make our school what it is. Terrace will join with all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Brisbane to celebrate Catholic Education Week. The theme for Catholic Education Week is: ‘Sharing the Journey’. The idea of journey as a central theme has been drawn from several quotes from Pope Francis.

The whole journey of life is a journey of preparation…to see, to feel, to understand the beauty of what lies ahead, of the homeland towards which we walk.

Next Tuesday, students in Year 5 have the opportunity to visit and volunteer for Food Bank Queensland. This is our third year assisting Food Bank with its aim for Australia without Hunger and now we have a chance to be hands on to help pack and organise donations at Food Bank’s distribution warehouse.

House Choir Evening

House Choir night is this Friday and the excitement can certainly be felt as you walk around the campus during House Choir rehearsal.

This year will see Eat St continue with more vendors and answering the call including a healthy option! House Choir night starts at 6.30pm with the precinct open from 5pm. For the new members of our community, there are two prizes on offer: the House Choir Cup is awarded from adjudicator votes to the best House. The second is the People’s Choice award – presented to the House who receives the most votes. Votes are given in the form of a monetary donation of one vote = $1. Tensions will be high and reigning champions of both House Choir Cup and People’s Choice, Barrett House will have a lot to live up to!

Debating Finalists

Term 3 is a busy term for Debating with the continuation of the QDU Primary and Junior Secondary Competition and the commencement of finals for the Secondary competition. Eight teams across Years 8 to 12 have made it through to finals; Senior A, Senior B, 11.1, 11.3, 10.1, 10.2, 9.5 and 8.1. Congratulations to these teams and we wish them all the best!

Later this term, registrations will open for Terrace Debating 2018. Trials for 2018 Year 9 to 12 teams will occur in Term 4. More information regarding trials will be sent out to registered students.

The Debating Supporters Group will be holding their AGM later this term and some planning meetings in Term 4 for the 2018 program – keep an eye out for date claimers. A big thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Debating Dinner and the Years 5 and 6 GPS Debating Breakup Lunch. Particular thanks to the DSG and volunteers for organising both of these events.

With the second week of term almost over, I trust everyone is settling back into their regular routines with lessons and rehearsals. I would like to remind all parents and students that we have arrangements with sport to ensure that our boys are able to participate in all activities; if you have any questions regarding this please feel free to contact me.

All our ensembles will be focusing on preparations for the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) which will take place at Villanova College from Thursday 17 August through Sunday 20 August. This is our “grand final” event for music and as such, it is expected that these performances take priority. Please ensure that music is being practised at home and that rehearsals are attended regularly. Parent Lounge notifications and Event Memos have been posted this week and we would appreciate prompt responses to assist us in the logistical preparations for such a large event. A Music Spirit Assembly will take place at the College on Thursday 17 August, just prior to QCMF, and will involve performances from our premier ensembles.

On Tuesday 1 August, 22 of our younger musicians will be representing Terrace at the GPS Music Day of Excellence (Years 5-7) which will take place at Nudgee College. Music has been distributed to teachers, and students are encouraged to begin working on their music to ensure they get the most out of this day. It is always an exciting and inspiring experience for our younger players. Notifications for this event have been sent out via Parent Lounge and a more detailed letter outlining the program for the day will be added to the Event Memo once this information becomes available.

The 2017 USA Music Tour Marching Band performed on College Assembly this week. During our USA Tour, this ensemble performed the longest march they are ever likely to perform; marching continuously for two hours at the Huntington Beach Fourth of July Parade to an estimated half a million people. Next week, the Waterford Strings, under the direction of Mrs Domenica Kelly, will perform for next weeks’ Medal Assembly.

VS NUDGEE COLLEGE

Terrace turned out in significant numbers last weekend in our Round 1 fixture against our traditional rivals Nudgee College.

Thank you to all families and boys for their support of the College.

It was great to see the boys dressed proudly in their formal uniform supporting all teams.

Terrace were the program winner and 1^st V winners in the Basketball whilst Nudgee College took the honours in Rugby program and 1^st XV.

However, the general standard of play in both programs, the commitment, enthusiasm and passion was outstanding.

Regardless of individual results – the performances of the boys were outstanding and the enthusiasm for the context between these two schools only leaves one wanting more – in 2018 Terrace will welcome NC to Tennyson and the College in Round 2. For those that proudly represented the College in Rugby and basketball in 2017, the return fixture cannot come soon enough.

ROUND 2 VS BSHS HOME FIXTURE

This Saturday we host BSHS in Rugby and Basketball. Unlike the NC Round 1, the College has had to secure a significant number of supplementary games in both activities.

To that end, I would like to specifically thank Mr Tyron Mandrusiak (Rugby) and Mr Sam Mackinnon (Basketball) for their efforts in securing games for all teams in both codes, well done. It is an enormous time consuming effort.

Due to Met North Representation in the Under 15 age level the Under 15B team from BSHS has all but moved up to their 15A team, so a BYE was the only true alternative here. The Terrace 15A team also had a number of players missing – this taking numbers out of the Terrace 15B team.

Hosting other schools fixtures whenever Terrace host a home fixture it is preferable for all our sup games to be at Tennyson. When we are away we send out sup games away. This weekend to accommodate fellow schools who are on away fixtures, Terrace will host three supplementary games featuring two different visiting schools.

REPRESENTATION

The College will participate in 11 official GPS activities throughout the year. However, from time to time, it is brought to our attention that boys have represented themselves and/or the College in any number of different activities that are not part of the 11 official GPS activities.

I firmly believe that boys who have achieved success in other sporting endeavours, need to be recognised and congratulated for their efforts.

So, if there has been success in representing Queensland at State or National Championships in eg. Water polo, Golf, Mountain Bike Riding, Cycling – whatever – please contact the College and inform us so we can mention it in the Terrace News or Terracian. Photos are always handy. BEST OF SPORTSMANSHIP

It was pleasing to see the sportsmanship on display last weekend by both the Terrace and Nudgee boys involved.

In any activity, sometimes things can get heated / frustrated. It is always good to remember to try and stay calm – after all the best decisions are made when cool heads prevail.

Reminder not to respond to provocation – don’t let yourself or your team mates down.

Actions have consequences and in light of actions outside of normal school hours, it is good to learn the lessons of patience and control here at school sport, actions outside of school have significant consequences.

Rugby Wrap

For the third year running Nudgee College won the St Joseph’s College Cup, recording 28 wins, two draws and eight losses against us. I think that it’s fair to say that both schools run two of the largest programs in the nation. Ensuring boys get regular games across all age groups requires a huge amount of time, effort and support from both schools.

Referees

Many thanks to all our referees who officiated games last weekend. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated group of students, old boys and parents who ensure that the boys play in a safe and well structured environment. Once again, your support of all referees, both ours and our opposition schools are greatly appreciated.

Medical Room

Thanks to Dr Ben Forster and his team of parent doctors along with the staff from twelve9teen sports physiotherapy. The medical room plays an important role on game day ensuring our boys along with our opposition are in safe hands. The coverage starts from game one and finishes at fulltime of the 1^st XV. We have sports aids, physios and doctors on hand to assist with all injuries.

BBQ Helpers

It has been agreed by the Rugby Support Group that certain age groups will be asked to provide the resources for at least one home game each year. In some years when we have bigger crowds (e.g. Nudgee) extra help will be needed. Many of you will have experienced a similar system in junior club Rugby. Depending on the number of volunteers, we are asking you to provide a minimum of one hour per season to contribute back to your son’s involvement in the Terrace rugby program. This weekend the Opens and Under 16 parents are asked to assist.

Supplementary Draw

From week to week our lower graded teams are drawn to play other schools higher graded teams and it's always very rewarding for these teams to outplay their opposition's. On many occasions these teams are asked to travel away from where the rest of the school is playing so I would like to thank all boys and their families for their understanding.

Team Man of the Week

A weekly Terrace Team Man is selected by the coaching staff during the GPS season. This is in recognition of any player who makes an outstanding contribution to their team both at training and in a game. Congratulations to all boys on their selection for Round 1.

Representative Sport

Terrace students are eligible to trial for selection into District and Met Nth Regional representative teams in a number of sports. Our primary students nominate via City Dist. and our secondary students via

Nth Independent or in some cases Met Nth direct depending on the sport. Boys will only be nominated if they are of a high standard and meet qualifying times in respective sports.

City District Term 2 Sports are:

Basketball Wrap

Director of Basketball – Mr Sam Mackinnon

Old rivals squared off in Round 1 of the GPS season at Nudgee College with a record number of students for both programs. Due to the high number of teams, most of the games were played outside and the conditions were perfect on a “hot” winter day. Overall the boys in Red and Black performed extremely well, winning 21 of 29 games for the day, highlighted by an 6 wins in the As and for the 1^sts fixtures 1 draw and one loss. Fantastic effort from all players and coaches!

The 1^st V played it tough in tightly contested game. Down three key players, other members of the group had to step-up into greater roles and burden a larger load of the pressure throughout. After a slow start in the first quarter the team went into the half time break up 37-30, however a dominant second half allowed them to get away with a comfortable win. The final score Terrace 1^st V 82, Nudgee College 67.

The Weekend was capped off by the season launch drinks at the Norman Hotel. This proved to be a great night, with all in attendance enjoying great ambience and great company. Thank you to the Basketball Support Group who were pivotal in getting this organised and special mention to Anne McMahon and Ange Papacostas for organising the event.

1st V Head Coach Report – Mr Matthew Hamilton-Smith

Round 1 Nudgee College

The 2017 1^st V season got underway last weekend at Nudgee. We have put in a significant effort in the preseason and the boys were keen to get on the court. It was never going to be an easy task beginning the season on the road. This was made even more difficult as we were without three young men who were representing Queensland at the Under 16 Australian Junior Championships.

Terrace jumped out of the gate quickly and got off to an 8-0 advantage. This saw our guys relax and believe that the game was over. This lackadaisical attitude let Nudgee back into the contest and the rest of the first quarter was a tight affair with Terrace holding a two point advantage at quarter time. This was the story for the rest of the game as we saw our lead grow towards 20 points only to be whittled away during periods of poor concentration. The boys showed enough class to close the game out and start the season off with a win by a margin of 82-67. Top performers for Terrace were Tyrese Fepuleai who dominated the game to finish with a tally of 31 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Adam Baumann put in a captain’s knock by shooting 8 of 9 from the field to finish with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Special mention also to Johnson Eltima (19 points, 4 rebounds) and Geordan Papacostas (10 points and 10 rebounds). This was an inspiring performance by Geordan, who is only in Year 8, as he gave Nudgee a taste of things to come for the next five years!

We will need to be better this week as we face BSHS who are a much more experienced opponent however the boys are looking forward to our first home game of the year and will relish the opportunity to defend their home floor.

New government policies have mandated that every school submits disability data to a central collection point. To follow this legislation Terrace will be contributing the following information.

What does disability mean? This new national data collection will reinforce the actions required of schools under the National Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. The significant change with this collection is the use of a broader definition of disability than the one currently used to identify and allocate resources in educational systems. This legislation stipulates schools and education systems to make, where appropriate, reasonable adjustments for students with disability.

What is an adjustment? An adjustment is a measure or action taken to assist a student with disability to participate in education on the same basis as other students. Adjustments can be made across the whole school setting, in the classroom and at the individual level.

What information will be collected? In 2017 the data will be collected on 4 August and will include:

• Total number of school students

• Number of students with a disability by school level enrolment (primary/secondary)

• Number of students within disability type (physical, social, cognitive or sensory)

• Level of adjustment provided (within differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial, and extensive)

Information will be recorded in such a way to be sure that no child can be identified.

Student names will not be collected centrally, only numbers are submitted.

Last Saturday 15 of the best rugby players this school has to offer played their hearts out and left nothing on the field. It was one of the greatest displays of Terrace spirit I had ever witnessed in my five years at this school. Despite losing to Nudgee by one point to a kick in overtime, how the players held their heads high and how the crowd still cheered them off the field will forever be one of the proudest moments of my final year at Terrace. But this was only the first game of eight, and this week we take on Brisbane State High at Tennyson for the first home game of the season. It will be just as important to get the same number of supporters as we did at Ross Oval as our 1^st XV’s season is only just starting and we are still a champion side.

The 1^st V Basketball Team also played a great first game at Nudgee defeating them by 20 points, while still missing three players to the State Championships. It was a great start to the season and Adam and his team will definitely want to back it up this weekend at the Terradome.

TLG Meeting | 17 July | 9am | GT125 | Mrs Julie Quinn, Dean of Studies our Guest Speaker

A very special thank you to all the parents who came along to the TLG meeting on Monday morning. Our guest speaker was Mrs Julie Quinn, Dean of Studies who focussed on Year 12 OP matters. It was good to see more than just Year 12 parents there as her presentation is certainly valid for anyone with children coming through the College now. Hearing Julie’s presentation is an affirmation as to the extraordinary lengths the College goes to in order to facilitate the best possible outcomes for our sons. Thank you Julie, it is very much appreciated.

Thank you also to Christine Franzmann, Year 12 Coordinator, who gave us an update on the parent function organised for the night of the Formal. The function is being held at “the Charming Squire”, just near the Formal venue so all in the vicinity of each other for convenience of dropping off and collecting our young ones from their evening. Tickets are $40 per person and RSVP’s close on 8 August. Details with the booking link are on the Events Page.

Christine also mentioned that the Year 12 Coordinators are organising lunch for our Senior boys doing QCS on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 August. A link will be emailed to Year 12 parents shortly calling on assistance for provisions and serving.

Save the Date | 7 August | Mothers Retreat

Be sure to come along to the wonderful morning planned for the Mothers Retreat on Monday 7 August at Tennyson. There will be Tai Chi under the jacarandas followed by a delicious brunch of fresh produce with cold pressed juices afterwards. Wear comfortable clothes, no active wear necessary. A link will be on the college events page later this week for purchasing your ticket (cost $30). An email will be sent out next week with more details and also with the link to the events page for purchasing your ticket. All are welcome.

Year 12 Formal | Etiquette Classes | 8 August | Week 5

The TLG hold etiquette classes during religion classes in period 4 on Tuesday 8 August. The boys are quite excited by that stage about their big night so the role playing gets them really engaged – lots of learning, but lots of laughing too. We have received great response to the call out for assistance with this, so thank you to those ladies who have offered. We will be in touch soon with more details.

Tennyson Canteen

This weekend we host Brisbane State High School at Tennyson. We are looking forward to another great day of rugby and a full offering at the canteen and BBQ pit. Remember that all help is most welcomed in the canteen and you can sign up for a time slot via the link sent out with the game schedules by the Sporting Office on Thursday. If you haven’t signed up and see that we are having a busy snap, by all means feel free to pop in for a short patch to help get us through. We would really appreciate it.
