Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

On Monday night the Terrace Family were witness to an outstanding Celebration of Excellence. The evening certainly highlighted the tremendous range of skill and talent that resides within this community. My congratulations to all involved with the evening and in particular, congratulations to all of our prize winners. A special mention to the 2017 College Dux, Patrick Sharkey and the Proxime Accessit, Callum Waite. Well done gentlemen.

As the end of the year draws closer, so too does the time for our Year 12 students. They are now on their final exam block and on Friday 17 November they, along with their parents, will attend the Valedictory Assembly, Mass, and Dinner.

As one group of Year 12 students prepare to depart, another prepares for their journey as the Seniors of 2018. Last week I published the College Captains and House Captains for 2018. This week I congratulate the 2018 leaders for Rowing and Swimming.

Captain of Swimming: Charles Williamson

Vice Captains of Swimming: Tom Dearlove and Oliver Milne

Captain of Rowing: Nick Rex

Vice Captains of Rowing: Max Crowe and Harry McGrath

Tomorrow, the College welcomes back our Vintage Terracians. To qualify to be a Vintage Terracian, these gentlemen must have left Terrace at least 50 years ago. It is always a wonderful day as an important part of our College history assembles together in College Hall. This year is more significant as tomorrow I will commission the refurbishment of College Hall. This year, work has been undertaken to refurbish College Hall, both internally and externally. This has been an extensive and expensive project. My sincere thanks to the Terrace Ladies Group for their contribution of $125 000 and the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association for their contribution of $25 000 of financial support towards this project. The Old Boys have committed to additional funding over the next two years to complete this project.

Finally, this week, I again congratulate all of the young men who performed at the Celebration of Excellence or who were prize recipients. Well done.

God Bless,

Dr Michael Carroll
College Principal

College Dean | Mr Chris Ryan

In 2018, we look forward to welcoming Mr David Giles, Ms Natalie Berndt and Ms Donna Compton back to the College. Mr Giles will be returning from the UK and will join our main campus staff team. Ms Berndt returns after completing a contract with us this year and Ms Compton returns from maternity leave and both will join Mr Giles on the main campus faculty. We also look forward to welcoming new members of staff, Ms Maryanne Costi and Ms Nicolette Cleary to the College on main campus in 2018. The College advertised for the positions of Drama Coordinator, Counsellor and Development Officer over the weekend and these recruitment processes will continue over the coming weeks.

Dr Carroll announced on Monday evening at the Celebration of Excellence that Mr Adrian Pauley will conclude his time on the teaching faculty at the end of this year. There will be an opportunity to acknowledge Mr Pauley formally but suffice to say, his contribution to the young men and parents of Treacy House was immense and his contribution as teacher and a person of substance, character and wisdom is among the greatest of contributions in our 142 year history. His role modelling as a Catholic person who is teacher, mentor, coach, friend, husband, father and grandfather has been a gift to Terrace. If he wasn’t an All Black supporter, he would be near perfect. ‘AP’ will be missed in the halls, corridors and playgrounds of daily life at Terrace next year, but he will remain involved and connected in various forums and projects including his beloved public speaking; the legend will live on.

Dean of Studies | Mrs Julie Quinn

Acknowledgement of Excellence

Our celebration on Monday evening acknowledged many of our students for their commitment and outcomes of their pursuits across academics, sport and culture. It is a proud moment for these young men to receive recognition for their dedication and hard work. As quoted by a previous prize winner -“I will always remember this moment- no material reward could ever match the satisfaction that I felt when I walked across the stage and was recognised by the audience for my hard work”. I know that we have many more of our students who work tirelessly to achieve their best and did not have the opportunity to be formally recognised last Monday evening. To all our boys who work so hard to give their best, I offer my congratulations for the diligence and discipline that you exhibit.

Exam Timetables

Exam timetables have now been issued to all students. This document should be used strategically by students to plan their revision. Spare copies are available from student services and can also be found on Moodle. I encourage all students to give their best effort both within the classroom and also in their preparation for the final exams of the year.

Below are some strategies for successful outcomes in exams:

The night before the exam
  1. Make sure you have checked and packed the required equipment.
  2. Go over rules, dates or any other rote learning that is required.
  3. Mentally list off every topic and key points in the topics that you have covered in the exam subject during the term.
  4. Make sure you get adequate sleep the night before the exam.
On the day of the exam
  1. Make sure you have a good breakfast.
  2. On arrival at school, do not get caught up in ‘panic conversation’ that could undermine your confidence.
  3. Plan your strategy for time allocation prior to the exam.
  4. Be positive and confident! If you have worked hard during the term this is the time when you deserve to be rewarded. Go into the exam feeling strong and confident – do not doubt yourself.
  5. During perusal read the paper carefully. Use a highlighter to remind or make yourself aware of key points.
  6. During the exam be aware of the time. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to answer a question when you know how to do it!
  7. Work hard for the whole duration of the exam. Check, check and re-check your work until it is time to hand in your paper.
Remember the 3 ‘Ps’ – Prepare, practise and persevere.

New Senior System- QCE

As we gain more information around the new Senior system commencing with the first of the external exams in 2020, we continue to seek best practice for both the delivery of content and ways of maximising outcomes for the boys. We will continue to update the community as planning progresses.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Fall

This week, our Senior students completed another milestone when they attended their last classes as school students. It was fitting that, on their final day, they also attended their final House Assembly and spent some time in sessions with their House Deans, reflecting on their time at Terrace. As I moved around and observed these assemblies and reflections, I was struck by how important the connection to House is for our young men. It is wonderful that they have a great sense of belonging to Terrace, but the feeling of family that exists within House groups is a highlight of the pastoral system. Many of our students’ strongest memories are from events related to their House, an indication of the importance of our pastoral system. We wish our Seniors the very best for their exams and for their Valedictory celebrations. As a College community, we will have the opportunity to farewell the seniors at their final assembly on the afternoon of Friday 17 November.

At the commencement of the year, we received strong feedback in support of a firmer stance against mobile phone usage at school. In 2017, we have attempted to consistently enforce the expectation that phones are kept in lockers for the duration of the school day. Dependence on devices creates a battle fought both at home and at school, but it is an important fight. There is recent research that strongly connects reliance on smartphones with adolescent mental health issues.

As with many of life’s pleasures, small doses are fine and moderation is essential. Our boys can struggle with self-moderation and hence, they need us to be firm with our expectations.

At this stage of the term, it is very easy for our young men to be thinking about the future – in only a few short weeks, they will be on holidays and away from the routines and boundaries of the academic year. However, despite the temptation to be thinking ahead, it is very important that our students live in the present and focus squarely on their responsibilities – finishing the year well, finalising assignments and carefully preparing for exams. Our message to students is very clear: it is business as usual for the remainder of the year and it is important to finish the year as well as possible. It is also tempting to let the hair and uniform slip as we get close to the end. However, our standards in this regard do not change and we expect students to continue to keep the bar high. I look forward to watching our men give their best until the end of the school year.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

‘Making a Real Difference’

The concept of ‘making a difference’ resonates with our humanity. However, many of us (including me!) want to ‘make a realdifference’. I was provided a healthy reminder of this as I joined an intimate gathering of friends from our Edmund Rice Network who gathered at City Hall last Friday night for the Edmund Rice Foundation Australia’s (ERFA) function.

Those in attendance at the ERFA function held one thing in common, they too feel called to ‘make a realdifference’. We gathered in support of the Christian Brothers' Ministries in Kenya. Significantly for our Terrace community, this special gathering also affirmed our Terrace Family’s commitment to our friends of Timor-Leste, another ministry of the Christian Brothers.

The TTN have continue to lead our Terrace Family’s response to supporting the Christian Brothers’ Timor-Leste ministry, determined to ‘make a real difference’ to the women of Railaco.

You can ‘make a real difference’ this Christmas, providing two days of work for the Women of Railaco. By purchasing a pack of handcrafted gift cards, you will ‘make a real difference’ to the very same women who have made the cards.

We have set a target of 1000 days of work for our Terrace Family. Our Waterford Place students and families have kicked us along by pledging 400 days of work. It is now over to the remainder of our community to see how close we can get to our target of 1000 days.

As well as responding to our human urge to making a difference, let’s also be mindful that we are responding to the call of the Gospel of Jesus and of the life and example of Edmund Rice.

Dean of Waterford | Mr Damien Cuddihy

The 2017 Waterford cohort is finishing the year exceptionally well and should be congratulated on what has been an excellent year across a multitude of areas. As I have stated on numerous occasions, the year spent at Waterford traditionally witnesses a great deal of change in the life of our young men. However, it can be difficult to identify these changes when you are walking with your son on a day to day basis. I’m currently preparing for the 2018 Waterford intake and again I am reminded of the level of social and emotional growth that occurs from the end of Year 9. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the following boys for achieving special awards for their involvement at Waterford this year.

Dux of Year 10 : Cyril Matthews

Yr 10 Leadership Prize: Angus White

Yr 10 Character, Service, Study and Co-curricular Prize: Matthew Rentoul

Junior Sportsman of the Year: Thomas Neill and Oliver Seawright

Years 5 and 6 Program Leader | Mr Brendan Ganley

As we move towards the season of Advent in the Christian Church calendar, the time parallels with themes in Week 6 of the school year at Terrace. Both times suggest the strong theme of preparation and anticipation. Through Advent, we take a spiritual journey to Christmas and at Terrace our journey now is moving very quickly towards the end of another school year.

Last Wednesday, the Year 6 retreat took place at Tennyson. It was a brilliant day for our young men as we enjoyed the chance to reflect on the time at Terrace after two years and what the changes into Year 7 will be like. It was a positive experience where we affirmed our class mates and looked at the strengths that each of us will take into 2018.

All the hard work that students have put into the preparation for the final exams over the past two terms will have put them in the position to achieve their best results. It is now the final opportunity for students to check with their teachers that they have everything covered in their final preparation. Exam time is important. How we enter and engage in the process of the exam all contributes to the final outcomes; students should be sure to complete each question, re-visit answers and reflect on the process to the final answer.

Congratulations once again to our Primary school award winners from Monday night’s spectacular Celebration of Excellence at the Convention Centre. The evening recognised the extra hours and effort spent by students to achieve continuously high results.

In our core classrooms this week, we have rewarded the students who have made great contributions to upholding the ideals of The Terrace Gentleman. This could be through their positive interactions with others or through their application to study.

5 Blue – Sebastian Fenech and John Hampson

5 Gold – Marcus Saunders and Max Van Balen

5 Red – Sam Hindmarsh and Alex Richards

5 White – Joseph McKenna and Blair Morrison

6 Blue – Thomas Hoffman and Declan Farrell

6 Gold – Conor Hennessy and Ciaran McCormack

6 Red – Jaymond Menegazzo and Will Smith

6 White – Kieran Mills and Joe Sorby

An invitation is extended to Years 5/6 parents to our End of Year Masses. Our Year five Mass will take place on Tuesday 21 November and Year 6 will be held on Wednesday 22 November. Each Mass will begin at 9.00am in the College Chapel of the Holy Family with refreshments in the Founders’ Room following Mass. It would be great to see as many parents as possible to celebrate with their sons the year that was 2017.

Director of Music | Mr Brad Esbensen

I would like to begin this week’s article by congratulating all of our musicians and choristers on their outstanding performance at Monday evening’s Celebration of Excellence. The feedback following the event has been very positive and supportive of the outstanding performances from our students. The full day of rehearsals and tech. runs was quite lengthy but had a relaxed feel to it and I would like to congratulate all of the boys on the way they participated. Their behaviour and professionalism was exceptional; they didn’t miss a beat and produced excellent results in the performance.

Our Year 12 students finished classes on Tuesday and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our musicians and their parents for their commitment and support during their time at Terrace. I would particularly like to acknowledge our music captains, Patrick Sharkey (Music Captain) and Simon Hatton (Music Vice Captain), for their dedication to the roles and their leadership throughout the year.

This Saturday morning, we will be holding placement hearings to welcome new students to Terrace Music. It is not necessary for any students currently enrolled in our program to attend auditions on the day.

Following the auditions and placement of students in ensembles, all those involved in our premier ensembles will be receiving an invitation to attend the 2018 Music Camp. There will be some changes to the usual run for camp in 2018 due to increasing numbers of students involved in the program. Dates are currently set for Monday 15 January through to Friday 19 January and a schedule outlining student involvement will be sent shortly. The camp is a great opportunity for our musicians to engage in several days of intensive rehearsals to hone their skills and to develop a sense of teamwork and camaraderie within their ensembles. Once it has been sent, please respond to the Parent Lounge request by the due date as numbers need to be finalised with the camp site before the end of term.

Over the course of the next few weeks, you will be receiving information regarding lessons and ensembles for 2018. Could you please respond to these requests promptly to assist our Music staff in timetable planning and ensemble programs for next year and prepare billings for Term 1, 2018 lessons. Please notify the Music Dept. of any enrolment changes to your son’s lessons for 2018. Students currently enrolled in the program will automatically roll over into 2018.

Please see below for the list of Term 4 events. Please remember to accept tour notifications as they are sent through Parent Lounge and check Event Memos(available through the Terrace App).

Term 4 Events

  • Placement Hearing Day: Saturday 11 November for all students new to the College in 2018
  • Valedictory Mass: Friday 17 November, Cathedral of St. Stephen’s: Terrace Choir

Director of Sport | Mr Damian Wright

Planning and preparation for Season 2018 is well underway. Below are two significant changes that will occur in our largest participation programs – Football and Rugby.

FOOTBALL 2018

Following a review of the 2017 Football season the College has entered into a partnership with Brisbane City Football Club.

Structurally the program will encompass three distinct areas of development. The “First Development Squad will target those boys from Year 10, Year 11 and Open who are earmarked for 1st Football representation.

The second grouping of boys is the Performance Program targeting young men in Years 7, 8 and 9 who make up the top 25 of each year level – with the goal of one day progressing into the 1st XI.

The third group is targeted at those young men who are happy to simply participate with their mates and enjoy the game. This “Participation Program” covers the Years 7 to Opens teams in divisions C to F. Alongside the Participation Program is the Years 5 and 6 program, specifically aimed at skill development in our younger members of the school.

Terrace will welcome a new 1st XI coach and Head of the 1st XI Development Squad in Mr John Kosmina. John is a well known coach and personality in Football. A former A league coach and outstanding player in his own right, John will bring a fresh new direction to Football at Terrace.

An email has been sent to Terrace Football families, further outlining John’s Football predigree. John will be joined by Mr Mitchell Edwards from Brisbane City who will work closely with the Performance Program and develop a common coaching course, football language and style of play throughout the entire program.

Mr Brian Hastings will guide the Years 5 and 6 program and the Participation program.

Invitation

The Football Support Group will have an information evening this coming Monday 13 November at 6pm in the Waterford Lecture Theatre. Both John and Mitchell will be in attendance. All Football families are welcome to attend.

RUGBY 2018

There will be a change in the 1st XV coaching ranks in 2018. Mr Tom Barker will take the reins and ownership of the flagship team of the Rugby program. Tom is a very experienced coach who has in recent years directed the A/B program in younger age levels. Having tasted success in 1st XV previously at two other schools, Tom will bring enthusiasm and a new set of eyes to the Rugby program.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the outstanding roles Mr Ben McCormack and Mr Tony Wall have completed over many years in Terrace Rugby. Thank you to both gentleman for their leadership, guidance and cool heads. The College wishes both of them best wishes for their future coaching endeavours and will always welcome them back in the future.

WATERPOLO REPRESENTATIVES

I would like to extend congratulations to Lachlan Steains (Year 10) and Dominic Thompson (Year 11), for their selections on the Metropolitan North Under 17 Waterpolo team. Samuel Smeaton (Year 11) has been listed as a reserve for the team also. We wish them well while they prepare for the Queensland Schools State Waterpolo Championships being held on the Sunshine Coast in March 2018.

Captain’s Corner | Vice Captain, Jack Kimmins

I have been staring, at a blank word document for the past 45 minutes, trying to write this. In this time, I’ve tried to distil almost one-third of my life so far, into one final Captain’s Corner. I have been attempting to encapsulate thousands of periods in the classroom, hundreds of Saturdays at Tennyson and admittedly, two communities in GT125, into a few hundred words.

After finally deciding that a 6000 word essay was an unreasonable length for the newsletter, I am now settled on two messages that I want to give to the Terrace Family before I leave. 'Thank you' and 'good luck'.

First, my message of thanks. There are so many people at this school that have had an impact on my time at Terrace, both student and staff, both present and past. It would be impossible to name them all, but there are a few that stand out. Thank you to Mr Covill, my Tutor, he is an example of the fine men who teach at Terrace. He consistently displayed what it meant to be a good man. Thank you to Michael Wellington, the College Captain of 2013, he provided me with a role model of a leader who always stayed true to himself. His strength of character and kindness are things that I look to embody every day. Thank you to Jenny Ryan, my mother, who has been there beside me every step of the way. She has played more of a hand than any other in my Terrace journey and in my journey towards becoming a man. Her fortitude and devotion to me have allowed me to lead as full a life as possible. Thank you to all those who have inspired, taught, nurtured and supported me, both when I realised it and, more importantly, when I didn’t. You have all contributed to a part of my life that I will remember fondly.

For the boys who are continuing their journey at Terrace, I would encourage you to heed this message. Think about all those who have helped you on your journey, acknowledge them and thank them, it will mean more to them than you could ever know.

Secondly, good luck. As I began to come to terms with the fact that I would be leaving, I started to look around me and wonder about the future of Terrace. The more I looked at the boys in the grades below me, the more I realised Terrace has great years to come. There are so many different talents in the younger students of this school, its future is surely bright. As I leave, I wish good luck to the boys who remain behind. To Jacob, Zach, Tom, Will and Tom, good luck for next year, I know you will do a brilliant job. To the Year 5s of 2018, good luck, I hope the start of your Terrace journey is filled with good times and great friendships. To the Seniors of 2075, good luck, I hope you uphold the values first forged 200 years prior and ensure that they continue for the next 200.

Now, I say goodbye, it has been a privilege and pleasure to be a custodian of this College in 2017. Whilst, the goodbye is bittersweet, I very much look forward to adding one more name to the 18 000 Terracians who have gone before us.

Terrace Ladies Group

TLG Thanksgiving Mass – Friday 3 November 9.30am

Last Friday, 3 November, we had the end of year TLG Thanksgiving Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Family, followed by Morning Tea in the Founders’ room. We have had a lot to celebrate and be thankful for this year, especially our Year 12s who are spending their final days at the College. The choir, led by Mrs Bernadette Debattista, was truly wonderful. Your music and hymns are something which we all truly appreciate. A special thank you also to Mr Charles Brauer and Mrs Judy McGuire for putting together the wonderful booklet to help us celebrate and to the ladies who participated in the ceremony.

Year 12 Lunch

Thank you to Mrs Lorilie Cunningham for organising the Year 12 Mothers' lunch at Gambaro last week and to your team of helpers: Mrs Christine Franzmann, Mrs Helen Smethhurst, Mrs Paula Galloway and Mrs Meaghan Round. I would also like to make special mention of Mrs Meaghan Round for putting together the beautiful collection of photos of our Year 12 boys at different phases of their lives. We all loved seeing ourselves and each other – especially since we remember these boys as the little boys they were when they started.

College Staff Christmas Lunch – Wednesday 29 November

NB: please note a change to this day – originally scheduled for Tuesday 28 November, now Wednesday 29 November

The annual Staff Christmas Lunch is a wonderful celebration of our staff in appreciation for all their efforts and support of our boys throughout the year. The TLG hosts this through the generosity of our families with contributions of help on the day, food and monetary donations. An email has been circulated this week seeking assistance via Volunteer Sign up sheets for this event in providing food, helping on the day or cash donations (Staff Lunch - helps click here, Staff Lunch - food donations click here, cash donations dropped to Finance Office labelled TLG Staff Lunch). Please assist where you can, the College Staff look forward to this very much and appreciate the festive atmosphere we put on for them. It is a terrific end to their very busy year.

Parent Directory

Another reminder for everyone to go to their Parent Directory listing on the Parent Lounge and select the details they wish to be shared. This is how you do it (more detailed instructions are available via the College App):

Parent Lounge | Parent Details | Parent Directory | then select “Maintain” at the “My Parent Listing”. Then you need to select to “Share” which aspect of your listing you want public – be sure to “Save Changes”.

There are still many blank spaces in the Directory across all year levels so if you notice friends without their details on the electronic version, please send them a reminder perhaps. The Parent Directory is a fundamental component of the College’s inclusive community so it is vital we have the information at hand.

A printed version of the Family Directory will also be available for 2018 based on what you allow through Parent Lounge.

Year Level Coordinators

We are wanting to collate names of ladies to be the Year Level Coordinators for next year. This is not an onerous role, but crucially important, and involves organising events like coffee mornings and a couple of evening functions per year for your year level. Thanks to those who have already put their hand up. I know we are set for Years 5, 7 and 10. If you are interested in coordinating the other years, please get in touch via email on melissa.a.jo@gmail.com.

Canteen Update

I am pleased to advise that we have filled the Canteen Convenor position. Noelene Brooks comes to us with a lot of experience in catering and canteen services, more recently at the University of Queensland. She will commence at the beginning of Cricket season. Please welcome Noelene when you are there and make her feel welcome.
