                        Student Life

Student life at Gregory Terrace is one of opportunities.

We aim to provide an environment in which students can be “the best that they can be.’’

Our primary goal is education and we achieve this in many ways, including academics, sport, culture and service - all of which are influenced every day by our being a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition.

The House system, outdoor experiences available at Lake Maroon and career and personal guidance all contribute to an atmosphere of care fostered by dedicated staff and families, who work in partnership to ensure a well-rounded student, one who can leave Gregory Terrace at the end of Year 12 confident that he has been prepared as well as is possible for life beyond our gates.

St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace Commitment to Child Safety and Wellbeing

All children have a right to feel safe, and be safe. St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace is committed to creating an environment where the safety, wellbeing, and participation of all children and young people is paramount. We have zero tolerance of child abuse and all allegations and safety concerns are treated very seriously and consistently with our robust policies and procedures. As part of EREA, the College has legal and moral obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety, which we follow rigorously.

The College demonstrates its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people by:

                        • taking into consideration the views of children and young people about decisions that affect their lives
                        • empowering children and young people by taking their views seriously, and addressing any concerns they may have
                        • acknowledging the cultural diversity of families, and being sensitive to how this may impact on child safety
                        • taking proactive steps to prevent child abuse, and identifying risks early so that such risks may be removed or reduced
                        • continuously reviewing and improving our systems and practices to protect children and young people from abuse
                        • providing children and young people with the knowledge and skills to understand and maintain their own personal safety.

The College demonstrates respect and support for all staff, contractors and volunteers by:

                        • applying robust human resources and recruitment practices for all staff, contractors and volunteers
                        • providing regular training and education on child abuse risks
                        • implementing specific policies, procedures, training and a National Code of Conduct (linked here) to support the achievement of child safety
                        • listening to concerns about the safety of children, and suggestions to improve the child safety processes in place
                        • ensuring that every person involved with the College understands the important and specific role they play individually and collectively to ensure that the wellbeing and safety of all children and young people is at the forefront of all they do and every decision they make.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we, as members of the Terrace Family, acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of our Nation. We acknowledge, respect and give gratitude to the Traditional Owners of the Countries on which our campuses are located. We pay our respects to Ancestors, Elders, and leaders of the future as well as to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members of our Terrace Family. We value the knowledge of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and recognise and honour their stories, cultures, and achievements as we walk together for mutual liberation and a truth-telling history for all Australians. Inspired by the Edmund Rice Education Touchstones, we are called to be people of knowledge, humility and wisdom who walk in solidarity with the First Peoples of our Nation for reconciliation, justice, equity and healing.
