GPS CRICKET | ROUND 8 | SATURDAY 17 MARCH

Round 8 of GPS Cricket saw the A/B program play against the traditionally strong cricketing college Ipswich Grammar School (IGS). The majority of the program played in supplementary matches vs Brisbane Boys' College, Toowoomba Grammar School, Anglican Church Grammar School, Nudgee College, Brisbane Grammar School, Padua College, St Laurence’s College and Ashgrove College. Terrace had its most successful day to date this season against a GPS College, winning 14 of 18 games v IGS, including a bonus point victory in the 1st XI fixture.  Added to this was the strong results seen in the supplementary matches, as the program won 68% of all games played on the weekend. The students and coaching staff should be congratulated for maintaining their high standards at training and on game day, which is contributing to positive on-field individual and team success. With one round of the GPS Season to go, we hope these standards can be maintained and the program encourages students to play ‘team first’ cricket, representing the College with pride.

GPS CRICKET | ROUND 9 | SATURDAY 24 MARCH

The final Round of GPS Cricket has Terrace playing Toowoomba Grammar School amongst a host of supplementary schools, providing Terrace Cricketers one final challenge to finish the season as strongly as they started. The willingness to compete and the collective contributions of all team members is what the Terrace Cricket culture is built upon; no ‘one man teams’ and everyone chips in to play their part in the side. We encourage the students to play with this mantra in mind and compete until the final delivery of their game. A reminder to all students, particularly those who have to travel this weekend, about their commitment to the program and ensuring they allow plenty of travel time to be on time at their game this weekend. For those cricketers playing at TGS, it is a great experience for any Terracian to be a part of and we hope the boys and their families enjoy their day at the cricket.

1st XI MATCH REPORT

GT 5/142 (39.3 overs) defeated IGS 10/141 (42.2 overs) Round 8 of the GPS season saw Terrace travel west to face Ipswich Grammar School. Terrace took an unchanged XI from their previous GPS fixture in Round 6, as IGS won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked to have something on offer for both bat and ball. Terrace made the perfect start with the ball as Max Law (1/26 off 9) struck in the opening over of the match whilst Nick Morton was typically economical from the other end. Will Kirk (1/12 off 2) picked up a second wicket for Terrace; however it was the introduction of spin through the middle overs that turned the game firmly in Terrace’s favour. Ryan Walker (2/34 off 10) and Nick McGill (2/21 off 10) chipped in with wickets, whilst putting the breaks on the IGS scoring rate as the hosts struggled through to 6/100 at the second drinks break. Sensing an opportunity to quickly wrap the innings up, Terrace rallied again and Cooper Simmonds (1/24 off 3) picked up the seventh wicket before James Hurst chipped in with a run out as IGS slipped further into trouble at 8/107. Some lusty blows from the tail saw the hosts rally; however the reintroduction of Morton (2/21 off 9) saw the IGS innings wrapped up for 141. Terrace knew the new ball period would be crucial if they were to chase this target and IGS proved they were up for the contest with a superb opening spell, which claimed the wickets of Ed Backstrom (7), Nick McGill (6) and Will Kirk (0) as Terrace were left staring down the barrel of another collapse at 3/14. Tom Pappalardo and Lachlan Marshall came together with a partnership desperately needed and the pair showed application and determination under immense pressure from a buoyant Ipswich outfit. Both players were resolute in defence and ruthless on anything overpitched as they battled to bring Terrace back into the contest. Marshall brought up a well deserved 50 and his stand with Pappalardo was worth 120 when he finally departed for 64, Terrace requiring just 8 for victory inside 2 overs to claim a bonus point. Pappalardo (45) was also caught trying to force the bonus point; however Hurst (4 not out) and Walker (1 not out) guided Terrace home inside the 40 overs required to claim a bonus point victory. Terrace returned home from Brassall pleased with the victory and the bonus point. The effort from the bowlers was the catalyst for this victory as the team did well to keep IGS to what seemed a below par 141 on a good wicket. Whilst the chase seemed comprehensive in the end, the top order will be looking to get back amongst the runs and buck the trend of early wickets when Toowoomba visit Internationals Oval in the final round of the GPS season next Saturday.

Volleyball

Ms Kaitlin Sullivan – Head Coach

Round 8 saw the Terrace volleyballers make the trip out to Ipswich Grammar School. It was a successful day with many teams coming away with a win after our two week break from games. The 7As found their winning rhythm again and finished the game in two sets to nil. The 8As had a comfortable win, and Nick Lawrence was awarded MVP for his consistent setting. The 9As had a very slow start to the game, going down in the first set, but managed to find their rhythm after some much needed motivation from Tom Sheehan and came away with the win, taking the third set 15-2. The 10As found themselves in a deciding third set; however through smart hitting and serving, and strong presence in the middle from Maliq Jackson, were able to win. Pat Hobson was aggressive in his hitting and passing for the 11As, who won in two sets. The 2nd VI continued their undefeated streak, closing out the game in two sets. Terrace Volleyball takes on Toowoomba Grammar School at home and all students and their families are encouraged to support this weekend as we close out the 2018 GPS season.

Mr Ben Bell – 1st VI Head Coach

A welcome return to GPS competition after two long weeks of bye games saw the Terrace Volleyball First VI take on IGS, a team with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Terrace came into the match with a goal of remaining focused on the task at hand and winning points on our own accord. IGS challenged the 1st VI in attaining this goal through solid defence and risk taking in attack, which at times paid dividends. While set scores may have been closer than expected, Terrace was largely the dominant team throughout the match – taking the game 3-0. Contributions from all players in the 12 man squad saw a true team effort leading up to the final game of GPS competition for 2018.

The 1st VI is looking forward to this Saturday’s game against TGS, with many boys playing their last game for the College. We hope to embody all that we have learned and lived throughout this long season – passion, humility and the will to win.
