Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, James Hurst

A lot has happened at our College over the last week. We have had the first GPS round for Debating and Volleyball, the second GPS round for Cricket and Rowing and a Gorilla Gathering, to name just a few. However, I would like to take the time to talk about one of the key milestones for the Senior Class; the Induction Mass.

Over previous years, I have sat through this ceremony with a mild lack of appreciation of its significance. However, for obvious reasons, this year was different. With the Senior Class of 2019 beside me, a few key moments of the day stood out. One of them was Oliver’s first official speech to the School for 2019. In it, he elaborated on our theme for this year; All In. I was struck by the reality of sitting at the university with close to 2000 people all for one Senior Class. It was an All In moment. The Terrace Family has always supported the students of Terrace. The Terrace Family has been All In for many years. I am sure I have never appreciated all the work everyone does, so, to everyone in the Terrace Family, I would like to say thank you for supporting all the current and past students of Terrace.

The second moment that stood out was the lunch after the Mass. It was heart warming to see the class of 2019 and their parents chatting and celebrating the start of the final leg of our journey. However, more significantly, all the boys started to take photos to celebrate the event. What struck me was the inclusivity of it all. No boy was excluded on the day; anyone nearby was pulled into whatever photo was being taken. I am sure this is representative of the spirit of this Senior class. While we may have disagreements, every member of this cohort would walk across hot coals for each other. I am excited for the year ahead with this cohort and would like to wish them good luck and a good year.

All in!
