New Staff Profile – Mrs Dana Schottlaender, Senior A Coach

Mrs Dana Schottlaender was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has lived in the United States, United Kingdom and has called Australia home for the last six and a half years. Her debating career started as a debater in Year 7 and, since then, has taken her around the world as a debater, coach and adjudicator. Chosen to be a member of the Argentine National Team for the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) in Years 11 and 12, Dana then went on to represent Argentina as an adjudicator and the coach for the national team between the years 2007-2012, participating in a total of nine WSDC events. Among the people she met along the way was Gregory Terrace alumni and debating legend, Mr Simon Quinn, who recommended her for the Senior A coaching position at Gregory Terrace. Dana first joined the Terrace family as the Senior A Coach in 2013 and after winning the QDU premiership in 2015, she took some time off from her Senior A coaching to look after her newborn baby.

Outside of her debating career, Dana has a High Honours Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History from Tufts University in Massachusetts, a Masters in History from Universidad DiTella in Buenos Aires, and a Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Queensland. Dana is as passionate about debating as she is about teaching and working with young students, and she is very happy to be back at Gregory Terrace.

Diploma of Music

Congratulations to Old Boy Charlie Newman, GT 2018, who has received a Distinction for his Associate Diploma of Music (Drumkit Recital).  This is a fantastic achievement and will certainly hold him in great stead as he starts his studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

GPS Debating Round 1 Results

Our GPS Debaters had mixed results at last week’s debates against Brisbane State High School.  As is customary, the Years 5 and 6 students do not debate in Round 1.

GPS Debating Round 2

We will transport the boys by bus to Nudgee College on Friday, however parents are reminded that there will not be a return bus.

Information for this debate is on the Terrace App including a map for those parents who have not been to Nudgee.

Middle School Musical – Madagascar Jr

We have had some encouraging rehearsals for our Middle School Musical over the past two weeks.  Terrace is a very busy school and there is not a day that is empty on our calendar and if it is, it isn’t for long!  Because of this, our Cultural and Sport co-curricular programs work in tandem, ensuring that our boys do not feel overwhelmed, overcommitted or pressured to continue with only one activity when they would like to try another.

As a general rule, if a sporting activity and a cultural activity have two training sessions/rehearsals per week, students are permitted to attend both activities without penalty.  They must of course advise their coach/director as soon as they realise there is a clash.

In the case of new Years 5 and 7 students, it can be quite daunting and at the start of the year, a little overwhelming to speak to their coach/director.  As parents, you are more than welcome to email on behalf of your son.

2019 Music Tours

Thank you to all the parents who have signed their son up for a tour this year. We are now in the process of ascertaining who and what we have to ensure final costs and itinerary. Confirmation of the above will be communicated shortly.
