Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, Tom Dearlove

The curtain falls on this, my final Captains’ Corner for 2018. I find myself reminiscing on a wide range of memories from the last eight years. I remember my small, chubby faced Terrace brothers from Year 8 that have now grown into strong, independent, wonderful young men. I have genuinely never been so proud to call myself a part of something in my life. This year we have given it our all. There is nothing left in the tank. We have brought constant enthusiasm to every event, we have supported our brothers through thick and thin, and we have never given up. We have cried together, laughed together, celebrated together and we have shared ups and downs together. Because that is what being a part of the 2018 year is. To wear the Terrace crest on our chest and bleed the red and black is a true honour; we are proud of who we are, and we have a strong passion for where we come from. Thanks for the best year of my life boys. I will never forget you and how you made me feel. Shoulder to Shoulder we stood in 2018, and we will stand Shoulder to Shoulder for the rest of our lives.

I would like to thank all of our teachers, the College Leadership Team and all of the dedicated and friendly staff for your constant support. There are too many individuals who have helped me, watched my back, whispered a word of support and done me a favour, to thank individually. Cheers to my mates, Jacob, Pappa, Roachie and Boland for helping me throughout the year. 

To all of our parents who work hard day to day to fund our tuition at Terrace and then work hard around the clock to make sure our journey here is smooth and focused, you are heroes in our eyes. I am lucky to have met so many wonderful parents who have treated me so well. Special thanks to my Mum and Dad for putting my brothers and I through 12 years at Terrace. You have supported me in every way and I can’t thank you enough. 

So, as we transition into the next stage of our life, I would like to leave the Seniors of 2018 with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt:

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
