Dean of Waterford | Mr Luke Gribble

The Year 10 cohort have returned refreshed from the Easter break and are already back into the Waterford routine. I have been impressed with how our young men have embraced the opportunity to sit the exams missed due to early closure before Easter. Completing these exams does provide a chance to get feedback on how they are progressing here at Waterford.

Throughout the first term, many of the boys embraced the academic opportunities offered at Waterford and have achieved some outstanding results. Some boys are still a work in progress, and with your support, we will continue to challenge them to be the best that they can be. As teachers and parents/caregivers, we can provide the guidance and direction, but the motivation to learn and the drive to improve must come from within. The high expectations we set and the conversations that occur at home and school can hopefully assist in helping your son look forward with a positive attitude where he can find the motivation to work hard and keep improving.

I have encouraged the boys to be engaged in class and make time to attend the before and after school tutoring sessions conducted by the generous Waterford staff. If they are interested in obtaining a better understanding of the work being covered this term, then these two approaches here at Waterford, along with regular homework and revision at home, are by far the best strategies.

On Thursday of Week 2, the Year 10 cohort will sit several Benchmark tests. These tests provide our Studies Office with valuable data that assists with tracking the cohort and providing information that is useful for subject selection. There is no preparation or study required other than the standard equipment for exams.

As per the College calendar, the Year 10 Immersion Information evening will be held next Tuesday 27 April, at 6pm in the Campbell Centre.

In Term 3, from 31 August to 15 September, regular classes for the Year 10 students will cease so that all students can participate in an Immersion unit. We believe the Immersion experiences play an integral role in the development of our young men at Waterford. In September, they will embark on an experience that will spark their curiosity, inspire their desire to know more about their world and contribute to their growth and formation.

Your son will be issued an Immersion information booklet detailing the experiences, itinerary and cost of the Immersion units on offer. At the end of the presentations on Tuesday night, there will be an opportunity for parents/caregivers and students to meet with the individual Immersion leaders to discuss the Immersions in greater detail.

Selection forms are contained in the booklet and are due back on Friday 30 April (Week 2).

Finally, I would encourage you to include your son in the second round of Parent/Teacher interviews next Wednesday. Having your son in this conversation provides another valuable insight and assists in them taking ownership of their learning.
