Director of Sport | Mr Tony McGahan

Another season of Term 1 Sport has concluded for the year.  Cricket, Rowing, Swimming and Volleyball delivered strong participation numbers.  The Term also saw the entry for student spectators to return to support their peers, which is such an essential part of GPS Sport.  A big thank you to all families for making the most important sacrifice and giving your time during the week and on Saturdays for Terrace Sport to exist.

Cricket

The Terrace Cricket enjoyed a successful season, with most age groups across the program recording strong results. The program recorded winning days in each of the nine rounds, a streak that lasted three consecutive seasons.  Our 1st XI finished fifth in season 2021. A special mention must go to the 2nd XI, led by Harry Forster, who were premiership winners in their final season for the College. This group of young men, most of whom have been together since Year 7, are a credit to the College.  Thank you to the Director of Cricket, Mr Blair Copelin, for running such a large program along with his trusted right-hand men, Mr Charlie Marshall and Mr Slater Asnicar.

Rowing

Thank you to the Director of Rowing, Mr Brendan McGrath, for delivering a high quality physical, mental and team experience to our young men. The College placed fourth in The Old Boys' Cup, and the 1st VIII, under Head Coach Mr Tim Conrad, finished a credible third at Head of the River vying for the O’Connor Cup.

Swimming

The Terrace Swimming program has continued to grow due to the hard work by all involved over many years.  The program has improved performance across both the Junior and Senior programs, placing fourth and fifth respectively at the GPS Championship. Rackley’s Mr Tim Dilger has provided excellent direction for the swimmers alongside Director of Swimming Mr Michael MacDermott and Mr Michael Woolridge.

Volleyball

Congratulations to our 1st VI Volleyball team on an undefeated premiership-winning season.  They have improved as the season has evolved, playing their best at the back end of the season. The team has been well led by Captain Shaun Andersen. His leadership and excellence in play should be congratulated.  Head Coach Mr Ben Bell and Assistant Mr Cam Young have managed the on-court program this year and have done an outstanding job. Mr Matthew Hamilton-Smith’s contribution and experience across the program is again evident, and we are lucky to have him involved in both our court sports. Director of Volleyball Mr Tom O’Malley has overseen this program to provide a great Terrace Volleyball environment.

Term 2 Sports

Tennis, Football and Cross Country have been hard at it over the holidays putting the finishing preparation to their preseasons and selection for the start of the season this Saturday against Ipswich Grammar School in Round 1, and Cross Country for the ACGS meet on Friday.  Clinics, camps and training were varied from the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast to Lennox Heads and, of course, at Tennyson.  We thank the Directors, coaches and families who allow these camps and training to occur so we can be at our best during the season.

Attendance at training

I ask that all boys commit to their attendance at training during the week and present ready for their games/lead up meets, home or away. Representing the College is something to be valued. Being a team member who can be depended on entails sacrifice and commitment, no matter the activity level.

Uniform

Please be aware that all Directors, Coordinators and coaches have been asked to monitor training and playing uniform.  We want to ensure that we represent the College and ourselves, both on and off the field, with the highest standards.

Parent Lounge

Participation in College sport is outstanding due to the quality of the sporting programs offered that allow for all participation levels and the high standard of coaching across the individual sports.  An easy flow of communication is essential, ensuring everyone is kept informed. Please sign on for each Term sport via the Parent Lounge for in-season and preseason activities offered each term.  Typically, this is available for two weeks towards the end of the term.

Communication

Please download the College App and select to receive notifications for your son/s chosen activities to remain up to date. You will find updates, training and playing schedules, team lists, game/meet locations and further information under each individual sport.

The College is moving away from ongoing email communication, with the College App being used as the primary source of communication.

Congratulations

Finally, I would like to acknowledge all Year 12 boys who took part in Term 1 sport and thank them for their efforts playing their respective sports at Terrace.  These young men have represented the College well, some since 2014.  The Terrace Family is very proud of you, and in your final year, we want to thank you for pulling on the Red and Black for the last time.

Have a great Term 2 in Terrace Sport.
